“We Needed To Refresh The Palette”: Sony’s Ace Card Called Horizon Wouldn’t Exist Without This Game: Now Confirmed Dead and Forgotten by Its Creators

Horizon is one of the most popular PlayStation first-party titles ever. This sci-fi action RPG series first made its debut with Zero Dawn in 2017, followed by Forbidden West, 5 years later. In the recently concluded PlayStation’s State of Play, the remastered version of Zero Dawn was announced, which is going to be released on October 31.

Sony is also working on an online co-op title in the Horizon universe. Guerrilla is also working on a spin-off title in collaboration with LEGO. So, certainly, it has been quite a busy time for the developing company. However, all of these wouldn’t have been possible if Guerrilla didn’t put an end to another popular franchise.

Guerrilla is “Done” with the Killzone Franchise

Killzone is among the most requested series when the subject of reviving a long-forgotten franchise is brought up. However, there’s no chance of this franchise getting revived, as the team at Guerrilla has confirmed that they have been done with this franchise long ago.

In an interview with the Washington Post, this is what Guerrilla legend Roy Postma had to say about the forgotten franchise:

We were done with it as a team. As a studio, we needed to refresh the palette. It was, by choice, the opposite of Killzone. I think the themes that this story and the characters represent are relatable for all ages and people, like having a found family of friends and finding your place in the world.

There’s no doubt that Killzone made what Guerrilla is today. This alternative universe FPS title made an entry in the gaming world in 2004 on the PlayStation 2. This game revolutionized the world of first-person shooting with captivating gameplay and a phenomenal story. Since then, the franchise has spawned five titles so far, with the last installment being released over a decade ago.

Killzone Ended, So That Horizon Could Start

In 2017, when Guerrilla launched Horizon Zero Dawn, the whole gaming world was swept away by its post-apocalyptic setting. Before it, the developing team might have thought of reviving the Killzone franchise, but after the immense success, they never looked backward.

The Horizon franchise was vibrant and punchy, and it represented an entire world of opportunity and freedom. Not only that, this new franchise dished out several chances for exploration, just like Sony’s brave step of making a co-op multiplayer game in this franchise. Zero Dawn was the first title to surface after the poor performance of Killzone Shadow Fall in 2013, and many considered that to be the final nail in the coffin for the FPS franchise.

Killzone was the first game for many fans of our generation. Guerrilla’s firm and shocking decision to put an end to this franchise might have surely hurt millions of inner kids among us. However, after Shadow Fall’s collapse, it was quite evident that the franchise was not going to stand up again. Still, we had hopes, but now they are diminished.
