Space NK Advent Calendar review: this Advent calendar is “like a beauty hall of fame”

a woman is smiling next to a display of beauty products

YES, Christmas is a time for indulgence, but does a £250 Advent calendar stuffed with beauty products take the (gingerbread) biscuit?

I don’t think so.

Before you accuse me of being overly extravagant, I’ve tested more beautiful Advent calendars than you can shake a (lip)stick at.

Space NK Advent Calendar, £250 (worth £1,200)

Sure, some calendars lure you in with sparkly packaging then fail to deliver exciting products, but others can save you hundreds.

The Space NK Advent Calendar falls into the latter category and is a cost-effective (and festive) way to stock up on beauty buys for an entire year.

However, at £250 it’s certainly a bigger investment than a Dairy Milk calendar, so I’ve done a SpaceNK Advent Calendar review to see if it deserves a place next to your tree.

Pros

  • Recyclable packaging
  • You’ll receive multiple products on some days
  • Excellent range of products from Space NK’s bestselling brands
  • Whopping 79% saving

Cons

  • Has paper boxes instead of sturdy drawers
  • Smaller and flimsier than other calendars
  • Its bright, bold design is very Marmite

RATING: 4/5

Space NK Advent Calendar review: how we tested

If opening an Advent calendar in early September is a sin, then please forgive me.

In the name of value for money, I’ve prised open the Space NK Advent Calendar to determine whether it’s got bang for buck.

Whilst Christmas probably feels like months away to you, I’ve had the words ‘Advent calendar’ on the tip of my tongue for weeks, thanks to spending so much time investigating them.

I’m a big Christmas fan and can also appreciate some festive packaging, but I’m taking a strict analytic eye to this year’s beauty Advent calendars.

So, I’ve assessed the contents, presentation, and excitement factor of the Space NK Advent Calendar, leaving no stone unturned or product un-swatched.

After all, some Advent calendars are so good, that I’m wary of dishing out praise to anything unworthy; so here’s what I really think.

Space NK Advent Calendar review: quick summary

Space NK stocks thousands of beauty products, but it’s popped the best of the bunch into this Advent calendar.

Bursting with crowd-pleasing beauty goodies, this is one of the best-curated Advent calendars I’ve ever reviewed.

Bursting with crowd-pleasing beauty goodies, this is one of the best-curated Advent calendars I’ve ever reviewed.

From a hairspray that sent TikTok into a tailspin to a £60 face serum, this calendar’s contents left me feeling like I’d visited Space NK with a personal shopper.

Rather than drawers or doors, the Space NK Advent Calendar contains 25 paper boxes arranged in a Jenga-style stack.

Inside the boxes is a total of 35 products — spanning sunscreen to face cloths — and 23 are full-size.

While its flimsy packaging feels a bit cheap for a £250 Advent calendar, it is fully recyclable, meaning it can be popped into your wheelie bin.

First impressions

This calendar is beautiful in an ugly Christmas jumper kind of way.

Its foiled, cartoonish design makes for an assault on the eyeballs — meaning it’ll fit right in with the Christmas decs.

When I first read about the Space NK Advent Calendar, and the sheer number of products inside, I thought it would be too heavy to lift.

However, this is one of the most compact, lightweight calendars I’ve ever tested, thanks to being made of 100% paper.

Inside, you’ll find 25 boxes stacked so intricately that you’ve no hope of replacing them if they fall out.

Each box is inscribed with a message, which I initially assumed were festive greetings.

However, when I read one that said: ‘Transport yourself to Brazil in a single spritz’, I realised I’d been very silly.

You’ll need to be careful when opening each of the boxes, as I accidentally tore more than I’d care to admit.

So, while its eco-conscious packaging scores points, the heavy-handed should exercise caution (and contain their excitement) when opening this Advent calendar.

What’s inside the Space NK Advent Calendar?

*Spoilers below*

When reviewing other Advent calendars, some drawers and products will always be more exciting than others, which makes my job a lot easier.

So, Space NK, why have you made this so difficult?

This calendar’s contents list reads like a beauty hall of fame and stars some of 2024’s most impressive products.

This calendar’s contents list reads like a beauty hall of fame

Things kick off nicely at Day 1, where you’ll find full-size Sol de Janeiro body mist, £38, which achieved social media stardom thanks to its sugary, salted caramel notes.

Things dial up a notch at Day 10, where you’ll get your hands on a full-size Tatcha Serum Stick, worth £49, plus some travel-sized Sisely face masks.

Inside Day 25 is an Ultra Violette Queen Screen SPF50, £38, which is one of the most coveted sunscreens on the market.

And while suncream doesn’t feel very festive, it does serve as a reminder that SPF is for life, not just for summer.

There’s only one box that I’m a little disappointed with, and that belongs to Day 18.

Frankly, a travel-sized Space NK Body Wash, £8, alongside a travel-sized Eve Lom Cleanser, £20, can’t compete with the excitement of the other drawers – but will come in handy if you’re heading off on holiday soon.

Here’s the full list of what’s inside…

How much is the Space NK Advent Calendar?

At £250, there’s no quibbling that the Space NK Advent Calendar is expensive.

After all, do you splash out on one beauty Advent calendar or buy hundreds of Cadbury’s calendars instead?

But let’s be honest, you’re not buying a beauty advent calendar for its festive qualities (not exclusively, at least).

Instead, they’re a great way to treat yourself by trying new products while saving money, in comparison to buying them each individually.

This calendar’s contents racks up to £250 by just Day 6, and climbs to a total worth of over £1,200 by Day 25.

That’s a total saving of £950, or 79%, which beats the likes of Cult BeautyLiberty, and ASOS, which all sit at around 75%.

However, it’s slightly lower than the Lookfantastic Calendar, which will save you 82%.

Where to buy the Space NK Advent Calendar

There are Space NK stores across the country but to avoid disappointment or Black Friday-style calendar grabbing, I recommend you head to the Space NK website.

There, you’ll find free Standard delivery when you spend over £25, meaning your calendar will whizz its way over to you within 2-4 days, free of charge (and effort).

If you’re keener than that, Next Day Delivery costs just £5 – but ensure you place your order before 7 PM to receive it the next day.

I’d be shocked if anyone felt compelled to return their Advent calendar, but if you do, Space NK offer a free returns policy, too.

The verdict: is the Space NK Advent Calendar worth it?

The Space NK Advent Calendar isn’t the best value-for-money calendar nor is it the prettiest — but its contents are the most exciting.

The Space NK Advent Calendar isn’t the best value-for-money calendar nor is it the prettiest — but its contents are the most exciting.

Not only is there a brilliant range of products but many of them come from Space NK’s bestselling brands, meaning the retailer hasn’t used the calendar as an excuse to get rid of products they can’t shift.

While its 100% recyclable, plastic-free packaging is excellent, the delicate, one-use drawers mean these calendars will likely end up in bins come January, rather than being refilled or repurposed.

However, Advent calendars are notorious for their wasteful, landfill-ready packaging, so this is definitely a step in the right direction.

If you’re weighing up whether to purchase the Space NK Advent Calendar, I’ll leave you with this: when I usually look through an Advent calendar, I’ll make a mental note of who I’ll gift each product to.

But I didn’t do this with the Space NK Advent Calendar, because I’ll be keeping every product for myself.

Shocking true story behind Netflix’s Into the Fire as mom seeks missing daughter Aundria Bowman 35 years after adoption

A MOTHER’S desperate search for justice after her biological daughter vanished from her adoptive home 35 years ago has been turned into the latest true crime documentary.

Cathy Terkanian didn’t learn of her daughter’s disappearance until 2010 and teamed up with a detective to learn what actually happened.

MOTHER'S MISSION
Aundria Bowman vanished from her adopted parent’s home in 1989, however, her biological mother didn’t learn of it until years later

What they didn’t expect was to embark on a decade-long search to uncover the truth about her daughter’s fate.

Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter documents the search for Aundria Bowman, who suddenly disappeared from the home of her adopted parents in 1989.

Aundria, born Alexis Badger was given up by her mother when she was nine months old.

She was adopted by the Bowman family from Hamilton, Michigan at 21 months old.

However, a then-14-year-old Aundria vanished on March 11, 1989, and for years, it was believed that she ran away.

In reality, her adoptive father Dennis Bowman was behind the horrific truth.

Aundria accused Bowman of sexually abusing her and threatened to report him to the police.

The two got into a heated argument and Bowman punched the teen, knocking her down a flight of stairs.

Aundria broke her neck and Bowman took her body to a barn and burned her clothes before leaving her under a tarp.

Later that day, he reported Aundria missing, saying she stole $100 from the couple before running away.

Bowman dismembered her body, using an axe to cut her limbs so they would fit in a barrel.

He buried Aundria’s corpse and later reburied her at their new home after they moved.

SKETCHY PAST

Terkanian had been convinced for years that Bowman was behind her daughter’s disappearance after learning that he had a history of violence against women.

Police say Bowman raped a 27-year-old woman in 1979 and assaulted a 19-year-old woman in 1980.

The year Aundria vanished, authorities said he was involved in the kidnapping and sexual assault of a six-year-old girl.

Bowman was arrested for Aundria’s murder in 2019 and he quickly confessed to the crime.

In a recorded phone call at the Allegan County Jail in Norfolk, Virginia, Bowman told his wife, Brenda, where Aundria’s body was buried.

Her skeletal remains were discovered near the Bowman’s home.

“I have confessed to the death of Aundria,” he wrote in a confession letter.

“I myself and no one else. In an argument with her, I struck her, which made her stagger backwards and fall headfirst down a steep staircase in the house we rented between Holland and Hamilton.

“Fearing more prison time and losing my loved ones, I hid the body and then disposed of it days later. I have kept it to myself these many years so I could live with Brenda and watch Vanessa grow into a successful young lady.

“Please with all love I ask you to support Brenda because I have caused her hurt and left her desolate.”

Bowman’s arrest also led to him being charged with the 1980 rape and murder of Kathleen Doyle, which remained unsolved for nearly 40 years.

When he pleaded no contest to the murder of Aundria in 2021, he had already been serving two life sentences.

In June 2022 Bowman was sentenced to 35 to 50 years in prison for Aundria’s murder.

Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter will be released as a two-part docuseries on September 12 on Netflix.

Caitlin Clark and Jackie Young clash leaving WNBA stars in pain as Fever rookie questions ‘susprising’ offensive fouls

CAITLIN Clark has been left frustrated following Wednesday’s clash with the Las Vegas Aces.

The Indiana Fever lost just their third game since the summer break on Wednesday at the hands of the reigning WNBA champions, 86-75.

Clark and Young were left holding their faces after falling to the ground[/caption]

Rookie of the Year candidate Clark finished the game with 16 points, six assists, and three rebounds.

In doing so, she extended her own record of being the only player to have totaled at least 15 points and five assists to 16 – six more than anyone else, as per StatsMamba.

Despite this, it was a rough night for Clark, who got physical with Aces star Jackie Young during the third quarter.

After missing a layup, Clark’s right hand appeared to strike Young in the face.

Almost simultaneously, Young’s elbow hit Clark’s face, with both falling to the floor, clutching their faces.

A review followed, with officials deeming it a common foul.

Fast forward to the fourth quarter, Clark was called for an offensive foul on Chelsea Gray, after the Fever guard was deemed to have pushed her counterpart to the floor as she drove forward.

Clearly furious, Clark immediately looked for the officials, before being ushered away by teammates and head coach Christie Sides.

Following the game, Clark alluded to being unhappy at some of the offensive fouls called against them.

“The offensive fouls are definitely surprising at times,” she said.

“I feel like I do get held and get quite a bit of contact throughout the game and then you get hit with some of those when you take some contact and give contact back. It is what it is.

“I don’t know…apparently they see something different, and then we have to use our challenge to try to not let AB (Aliyah Boston) have a fifth foul in the third quarter that basically takes her out of the game, we lose a challenge, we lose a timeout.”

But while it may have been a frustrating night at times for Clark, she was able to see the bright side of the result.

She told reporters that their goal had been to hold opponents to 84 points or below, something they only narrowly missed out on.

Clark said she was “proud” of their defensive effort, adding that while they “struggled to make shots,” she felt they “never let that affect our defense.”

This defensive effort may have pleased Clark, but it wasn’t enough to prevent two-time MVP A’ja Wilson from setting a new league record in single-season scoring.

Her 27 points on the night brought her season total to 956, surpassing the previous record of 239 of Seattle Storm star Jewell Loyd in 2023.

On the topic of offense, it wasn’t a great night for the Fever, with Clark highlighting their room for improvement in that phase of the game.

“We just seemed a step slow on the offensive end especially,” she said.

“And especially with the type of defense they’re gonna play, they’re gonna be physical, they’re gonna be in your space, we have to set and use screens better.”

The Fever have just two days to work on their offensive consistency with a rematch against Las Vegas scheduled for 7:30pm ET on Friday.

It will be available to watch via subscription on Fubo and WNBA League Pass on YouTube.

Walmart shopper fumes as she spends $332 & ‘hateful’ clerk demands receipt – others were told ‘I like you, you can go’

A WALMART shopper has shared their frustration after a negative experience while checking out at the retailer.

Arkansas native Sookie Simone complained in a Facebook post about a recent experience at their local Walmart after spending hundreds of dollars.

Simone said she purchased $332 worth of items in an hour at Walmart in the post.

She then described the scene while she was checking out.

“The hateful woman asked to see my receipt,” Simone said.

“Then she told all the self-checkout customers they could go saying, ‘I like you. You can go.’”

The disgruntled shopper revealed that the clerk did not check any of the people’s receipts that she said could go.

Simone said she wrote a review upon returning home from the retailer.

THE AUDACITY AT CHECKOUT

“I wrote a review explaining my rude disrespectful experience from the woman checking sales receipts,” the shopper said.

In the review, the shopper revealed the day, time, and location where the incident took place.

The angry customer vowed to shop somewhere else.

But the in-person shopping experience wasn’t Simone’s only gripe.

At the beginning of her Facebook post, Simone complained about online shopping for the retailer.

“Online is outsourced to unreliable retailers in other states,” the shopper raged.

“It is offensive to be sold a product that never comes period.

“Only to end up waiting for a refund to be processed back into my account.”

The U.S. Sun has reached out to Walmart for comment regarding the issues.

Legality of receipt checks and detention

In an effort to curtail retail crime, stores are increasingly turning to receipt checks as shoppers exit.

Legally, stores can ask to see a customer’s receipts, and membership-only stores have the right to demand such checks if shoppers agreed to terms and conditions that authorize it.

Many legal professionals have weighed in and come to similar conclusions, caveating that all states do have specific laws.

Generally speaking, stores have Shopkeeper’s Privilege laws that allow them to detain a person until authorities arrive when they have reasonable suspicion that a crime, like theft, has been committed.

Declining to provide a receipt is not a reason in itself for a store to detain a customer, they must have further reason to suspect a shopper of criminal activity.

Due to the recent nature of the receipt checks, there is little concrete law on the legality of the practice, as it takes time for law to catch up with technology.

Setliff Law, P.C. claims that “there is no definitive case law specifically relating to refusal to produce a receipt for purchases.”

For stores that improperly use their Shopkeeper’s Privilege, they could face claims of false imprisonment.

“The primary law that applies to these types of wrongful detention cases is called ‘False Imprisonment’,” explained Hudson Valley local attorney Alex Mainetti.

“Of course, you’re not literally imprisoned, but you’re detained by a person who has no lawful authority to detain you and/or wrongfully detains a customer.”

It is likely that as altercations in stores over receipt checks continue, more court cases will occur giving clearer definitions and boundaries to the legality of receipt checks.

MORE COMPLAINTS FROM SHOPPERS

This isn’t the first time Walmart shoppers have aired their grievances with the retailer.

One Walmart shopper revealed she “nearly cried” during her latest checkout experience earlier this week.

The retail giant has faced increased scrutiny from customers over the last several months after implementing some new rules at self-checkout kiosks.

During a traumatic shopping trip at her local store, Walmart shopper Jessica Dooly experienced those new rules firsthand.

“I had an overflowing buggy and nearly cried when they asked me to use the cashier line,” Jessica shared with her Facebook friends and followers.

“I hate small talk THAT much!!! I love self-checkout. Thankfully my cashier was friendly [and] didn’t small talk,” she added.

Another shopper revealed that due to the lack of Apple pay, they were forced to abandon their cart which came out to over $400 in merchandise.

The angry customer then took out their frustrations on social media where they blasted Walmart.

“@Walmart I just walked out of a $439 grocery cart because you don’t have tap to pay,” wrote the angry user on X.
