The Penguin Star Cristin Milioti Reveals the Pre-Zack Snyder’s DCEU Batman Movie That “Terrified” Her

Before Gotham’s gritty underworld became her stomping ground in The Penguin, Cristin Milioti had a run-in with a Batman movie that left her absolutely terrified. And no, it wasn’t the moody, Snyder-style epic fans are used to. This was a different kind of Dark Knight moment, long before the DCEU took over.

Cristin Milioti’s bringing the heat as Sofia Falcone in HBO’s The Penguin, and she wasn’t shy about where her inspiration comes from. The actress spilled the tea on her childhood obsession with the Batman universe, particularly how Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance in Batman Returns left her both scared and mesmerized. She admitted,

I’m sure that performance is always somewhere [in my head] in the way that all those performances that you watch as a kid, that are so meaningful for you, take up permanent residence. I was 7 when Batman Returns came out and I saw it in theaters. It terrified me, but I also wanted to put it directly into my veins.

As Sofia, Milioti channeled that intensity with style, especially when she was dishing out justice to her mob family. You can totally see that fierce energy echoing Pfeiffer’s iconic Catwoman. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc saw the genuine love Milioti has for the franchise, alluding:

I don’t think she’s just saying that, I think she genuinely means it…I remember the costume came with these little push-on plastic, very flimsy nails. I would wait at the bottom of my driveway every day just rocking [back and forth] being like, ‘Is it today?’ I wore it for Halloween, yes, but then I wore it constantly. I would come home from school and put it on and just freak out.

And let’s not forget her childhood memories—Milioti was rocking a Catwoman costume for Halloween and then kept wearing it. “I wore it for Halloween, yes, but then I wore it constantly,” she recalled, capturing that childhood enthusiasm. Now, she’s ready to bring Sofia’s dark past to life in Episode 4, and fans can’t wait to see what she does next in this wild Gotham ride!

Cristin Milioti’s the queen of on-screen romance, from her endless love story with Andy Samberg in Palm Springs to her big reveal as the mother in How I Met Your Mother. But off-screen? She keeps it super low-key.

In a July 2020 chat with Vulture, Milioti spilled a bit about her past relationships, reflecting on a rough patch in 2016 that got her thinking. “What if we tried something else?” she asked, ditching the old playbook and trying to embrace life and love with an open heart.

Dating Jesse Hooker, the son of Lorna Luft and grandson of Judy Garland, she said in 2013 they were very happy and shot down engagement rumors like a pro. Their mutual friend played matchmaker, and she’s not about that dating app life. While she keeps her personal life private, Milioti’s dating history’s just as intriguing as her iconic roles!
