The Manhwa that Singlehandedly Wrote Its Own Doom After Getting a Fanbase So Strong They Lasted a 10-Year Long Hiatus

Owing to Solo Leveling‘s immense success, the Korean manhwa series has generated significant buzz online, captivating several new readers to the lesser-known world of Korean Webtoons. Despite generating an enormous fanbase, many fans aren’t aware of the anime’s roots and rise as a popular Korean webtoon (manhwa) series.

In recent years, manhwa and webtoons have seen a surge in popularity. Naturally, anime fans are eager to discover other popular Korean manhwa titles that can dominate the internet with their rich storytelling.

From The Beginning after the End to Omniscient Reader Viewpoints, there is plenty of manhwa series that fans consider true gems. However, there are only a few manhwa titles in the sports genre that have managed to gain a massive following and remain a standout among all. One such iconic title is Wind Breaker, which despite having a loyal fanbase, suffered a huge downfall because of its lengthy hiatus.

How Constant Breaks Ruined a Decade-Long Loyal Manhwa Fanbase

One of the biggest reasons behind Solo Leveling‘s immense success is the manhwa’s enormous popularity in the community. With Omniscient Reader Viewpoints‘ upcoming animation debut and Tower of God Season 2 immense success, the Korean Webtoon series continues to become the center of attention in the anime-manga industry.

For sports anime enthusiasts, Wind-Breaker immerses fans in the excitement of cycling with in-depth explanations of techniques, physics, and biology; alongside highlighting the role of discipline in athletes’ lives. It’s a 2013 South Korean manhwa series illustrated by Yongseok Jo and has over 25 volumes to its name.

The manhwa series follows the story of Jay, who is the president of the student council and an excellent cyclist. Wind Breaker is a story of self-discovery with epic competitions and has a captivating narrative following the themes of freedom and passion.

Mixing sports themes with youth gang drama and a slice-of-life situation, Wind-Breaker offers a unique plot that is both entertaining and intriguing. Sadly, despite the manhwa’s immense popularity and splendid storytelling, it failed to leave a long-lasting impression on its audience.

Many fans blame the manhwa’s lengthy hiatus for its declining popularity. Furthermore, the creator never responded to readers’ concerns, causing the loyal fanbase to feel neglected and prompting significant backlash.

Not to mention, the manhwa’s author also faces criticism for the rushed narrative intended to conclude Wind-Breaker and focus on their new upcoming series.

Korean Webtoon Platform Shuts Down 170 Piracy Sites, Sparking Fan Reactions

Naver Webtoon’s recent actions against piracy websites have shaken the entire manga-anime industry. Reportedly, the Korean Webtoon platform has filed a DMCA subpoena request for over 170 piracy websites and is currently preparing legal action against only three big piracy sites.

Naturally, within hours the news took over the entire internet, leaving fans worried about their go-to piracy sites’ future. The Webtoon Publisher Kakao also disclosed their plan to take down the largest comic piracy website in the world, starting with the letter ‘M’ by collaborating with Japanese publishers.

The Webtoon platform’s legal action has created a lot of commotion in the manga-anime industry. Although piracy sites promote unlawful distribution, they have also introduced several fans to the lesser-known world of Korean Webtoons. Not to forget, the Webtoon platform provides a very unpleasant experience for readers, especially with its paid services charging the user for every chapter.

Fans are left in a bittersweet state where supporting piracy sites seems to be the only viable option. Unfortunately, if Naver Webtoon’s legal efforts succeed, it could jeopardize the potential animation debut of popular manhwas like The Beginning After the EndThe Legend of the Northern Blade, and many others.

Wind-Breaker can be read on Naver or Webtoons
