Hollywood movie fans are concerned about one evolving aspect of new releases, the limited theatre screening. It seems like over the years new films have deserted the traditional route too early in favor of digital release. Movie-goers were shocked as another project joined the list.
DreamWorks Animations’ The Wild Robot got its digital premiere date only 18 days after it graced the big screen for the first time. Comments online were divided, some anticipating the arrival while a majority were displeased with the short theatre run. Fans stated their sorrow at losing the chance to view the spectacular screenplay in the theatre, apologizing to the studio’s co-founder Steven Spielberg.
Yet another limited release on the big screen
Previously, the news of Wolfs‘ limited run at the theatre shocked and saddened fans who were thrilled at the prospect of seeing George Clooney and Brad Pitt together. The duo reunited after 16 years to star in the action-thriller but it left the big screens too soon.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that the actors themselves wanted the decision to be changed and rallied for a longer theatrical release. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out and the movie was released on Apple TV+ on 27 September 2024 just a week after its theatrical release.
Similarly, another popular film seems to be following in the footsteps of John Watt’s directorial. DreamWorks Animations’ most awaited film, The Wild Robot released theatrically on 27 September 2024 and garnered a positive response.
Shockingly, The Hollywood Handle posted news of the film getting its digital release only 18 days after it graced the big screens. This film adapted from Peter Brown’s novel of the same name, starred Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, and Mark Hamill.
Others like Bill Nighy, Ving Rhames, Stephanie Hsu, and Kit Connor were also seen in the Chris Sanders‘ directorial. The film expertly explores the theme of found family, relationships, and emotional bonds as it navigates a shipwrecked robot’s journey.
Fan reaction and devastation
Fans online commented of their disappointment mixed with anticipation for the film’s digital release. Some were shocked at the short theatrical run since the movie deserved a big screen for the animation to properly impact the viewers.

18 days, that just seems way too fast especially with no competition on the horizon

Always bummed to see this for the theaters. These types of movies dessert WAY longer runs.
I assume this is done because the theaters start to make more money each year week the movie is in theaters as the percentages shift

I don’t get it. The animation for The Wild Robot is stunning and looks amazing on the big screen. Why not give it at least another week or two before the digital release?

already?! THE WILD ROBOT was having a good momentum in theaters! I really don’t understand the reason for such an early digital release.. pic.twitter.com/sdxh6Fd7cp

Not even 3 weeks? No wonder theaters are dying!

Those who had the opportunity to experience the film on the big screen attested to its magic which can’t be replicated on the digital platform. DreamWorks SKG was founded by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen in 1994 and so fans expressed their regret to Spielberg.
The movie already gained $148,455,190 worldwide according to Box Office Mojo even after its limited release in theatres. Deadline also released news of a sequel which was confirmed by the director.
Sander spoke to Deadline Contenders assuring the audience that a sequel was already in the works at the studio. The film’s quick digital premiere may have upset those who thought it deserved the big screen for a longer period, but fans have not failed to show the film much love.
The Wild Robot will be available to watch on Peacock or Netflix on 15 October 2024.
