My Love Story with Yamada-Kun at Lvl 999 Almost Wasted the Most Well Written Character of the Series Because of “A trial-and-error period”

When it comes to anime, few things are sweeter than romance. My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999  has one of the best takes on a slow-burn romance between a high school boy and a college girl. With only 13 episodes, the absence of unnecessary drama and filler characters has contributed to the anime’s reputation as one of the top rom-coms.

Not to mention, the season finale of My Love Story has left fans unsatisfied and craving more. Although there’s no official confirmation of Season 2, fans remain hopeful for a prequel, even with the manga’s extended hiatus. Unlike many iconic shoujo anime, My Love Story strikes a perfect balance of romance and comedy. Amid all the commendation, My Love Story nearly damaged its most beloved character due to a lack of clear direction.

How a Misguided Direction Almost Ruined a Beloved Character

My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 is an anime adaptation of a manga series written and illustrated by Mashiro. With just its debut season, My Love Story took the entire internet by storm captivating several rom-com enthusiasts to the series. Not to forget, fans have been asking for another season after the wholesome and fascinating ending of the show.

The anime follows the story of Akane Kinoshita, a female college student, who faces the absolute worst situation when she learns about her boyfriend’s affair and decides to break up with him. Luckily, she soon encounters Yamada, an emotionless yet handsome pro gamer. However, she quickly comes to understand her grim fate after discovering Yamada’s true nature.

Yamada is a man of few words and isn’t particularly moved by Akane’s sob story at first. Throughout the series, we see Akane and Yamada struggling to overcome their pasts and learn to love again.

In an interview, Mashiro revealed the anime’s biggest mistake that, if left unaddressed, could have jeopardized a fan-favorite character. He said:

When Runa first appeared and Akane was like, “Who is this girl?” At that time, we hadn’t yet established the direction of the story. So we weren’t sure how to treat Runa, whether to make her a love rival or a mascot character… We introduced her before everything had solidified. Also, in the early stages, there was a particularly strong comical aspect. Of course, it was partly to move the story along, but there were many scenes where Akane played the role of a clown. It was truly a trial-and-error period.

Mashiro mentioned that he and his team faced significant challenges at the start before finalizing the story. He shares how they were unsure about Runa’s character and her role as a love rival or a mascot character.

Moreover, Akane and Yamada weren’t envisioned as the ideal couple from the start, resulting in Akane often being cast in clown roles that, while entertaining for readers, posed a challenge for the creator. Nevertheless, the finale helped the series quickly establish itself as a comfort anime and one of the best romantic comedy series.

Finally, My Happy Marriage Season 2, which was green-lit before the first season’s finale, has unveiled a thrilling first trailer and a release window.
