Madison Beer on Being Asked if She is Bisexual Despite Only Dating Guys: ‘I think labels are really weird’

Bisexuality is a spectrum within the complexities that come with individual sexuality. It can manifest in different ways for everyone, and people’s dating histories can completely oppose the genders that they are attracted to. As more and more acceptance begins to surround the world of LGBTQ+ individuals, people have become quite curious about the sexualities of their beloved celebrities.

One such person who got to answer the big question was Madison Beer. During an interview, the singer was asked about her sexual identity, and her answer to the question was quite interesting. So much so that she countered what many may assume with her dating history.

Madison Beer on Her Sexual Identity

Over the years, Madison Beer has had many public relationships. Currently being involved with Nick Austin, she has been rumored to have exclusively dated men in the past. On top of her current relationship, by it was reported Cosmopolitan that she has been rumored to have been involved with Jack Gilinsky, Brooklyn Beckham, Zack Bia, and even David Dobrik.

While many would assume that this fact is enough to label her as straight, in 2016, she spoke on her sexuality in a YouNow chat with her fans (via Queerty) and her answer contradicted common beliefs. Beer was asked if she was a lesbian and answered candidly about her romantic interests.

I’m not a lesbian, but I definitely love girls. I think girls are beautiful and amazing and I think if I fell in love with a girl I wouldn’t be like, ‘Oh my god I’m falling in love with a girl’.

She confessed that although she was not a lesbian, she was attracted to girls. Putting the assumptions to rest, the singer stated that she found women to be extremely attractive and has even thought about what it would be like for her to fall in love with a girl.

I’ve been in love with a girl before. I’ve really genuinely fallen in love with a girl before and been like, ‘Oh my god’.”

Beer explained that she was aware enough about herself that if something like that happened in her life, her first thoughts would not be focused on the gender of the person she was falling for. She further added that she was actually in love with a woman in the past. In that situation, she stated that she was quite confused.

Madison Beer Has a Complicated Relationship with Labels

Although Madison Beer explained that she is attracted to girls, she did not add any label to herself. This was not a piece of information she accidentally left out, as the singer explained that she wasn’t a fan of putting labels on herself. Many queer people do not like to put themselves in specific categories within the community, finding them to be too caging and limiting.

[I] wouldn’t categorize myself as straight because I think labels are really weird.

While this was the case for Beer, some fans asked her about her sexual identity again in 2020. In a TikTok livestream with the singer (via YouTube), she was asked if she was bisexual, and she was quite direct about her answer. Referencing the chat with her fans a few years ago, she mentioned that she had come out four years ago and that she was, in fact, bisexual.

‘Are you bi?’ Yeah, I came out like four, three years ago…I am bi, always have been, it’s nothing new.

She also added that this was a question that she was frequently asked, and although she does not mind answering, Beer mentioned that she did not know why people wanted to know this about her. It is safe to assume that many of her fans must have felt somewhat understood after learning about her approach to her sexuality.
