It’s known that the former One Direction member struggled with drugs, alcohol, and mental health issues for several years. A white powder and clonazepam were found in his hotel room, which clearly suggests that these substances played a role in the situation. The medication, if taken carelessly, can be extremely dangerous and lead to concerning behavior — something the hotel staff mentioned about Payne.

Liam Payne‘s unexpected death remains a hot topic online, with fans and celebrities still coming to terms with the news and saying their goodbyes to the singer. In the meantime, investigations are ongoing to uncover and confirm all the details surrounding what may have led to his fall.

The cause of death was revealed to be polytrauma, with internal and external bleeding — enough to indicate that, unfortunately, there was little chance of saving the artist. Authorities are now awaiting the results of tests to determine whether there were drugs or alcohol in his system.

In the hotel room, several broken objects were found, along with alcoholic drinks, a white powder, and clonazepam. The latter, in particular, is a medication that should be used with caution, as it’s intended for the acute treatment of panic disorder, epilepsy, and nonconvulsive status epilepticus.

Although nothing has been confirmed regarding the use of this drug, the management of the hotel where he was staying suggests that Payne may have been under the influence of the substance.

ABC News obtained a recording of the urgent communication between the hotel in Argentina and emergency services, indicating that a guest could be in danger. According to the staff’s request, Payne was seen on the balcony of his room and appeared to be in distress:

We have a guest drunk with drugs and alcohol. When he is conscious, he is breaking everything in the room.

We need to send someone with urgency because I don’t know if the guest’s life is in danger because he is in a room with balcony, and we are afraid he could do something that threatens life.

Clonazepam is also commonly known as the medication Rivotril, which produces a calming effect, helps reduce anxiety, and prevents seizures. However, its side effects can include disturbed sleep, drowsiness, dizziness, and muscle weakness. (via National Health Service)

Since it has a black box warning, clonazepam must be administered with caution. Some of the more serious side effects include hallucinations, delusions, coordination problems, rapid heartbeat, fatigue, bleeding, shortness of breath, and mood swings. The situation can become even more dangerous if the drug is taken with alcohol.

The most suggested theory, which resonates with fans, relates to Payne’s mental health. The autopsy found no signs of resistance and indicated that he was likely alone in the room.

The possibility of suicide becomes more evident, given that the singer had previously opened up about his struggles with depression. In an interview for the documentary Straight Talking with Ant Middleton, he said: (via Sky News)

I’m quite lucky to be here still, which is something I’ve never really shared with anyone. I can’t go too deep into it because I don’t know how I feel about it myself. I still haven’t made my peace with it, to be honest. (…) There’s times where that level of loneliness and people getting into you every day. Just every so often, you’re like, when will this end? That’s almost nearly killed me a couple of times.

Fans of One Direction, who closely followed the lives of the members after the band split, have noticed Payne’s unusual behavior in recent years. Last year, he appeared on his official YouTube channel after spending a hundred days in rehab:

I just needed to take a little bit of time out for myself actually because I kind of became somebody who I didn’t really recognize anymore. And I’m sure you guys didn’t either.

His struggles with alcohol began as early as the band’s formation. In an interview with Men’s Health Australia, he admitted that he drank to help process his feelings, as the fame was incredibly challenging. Alcohol became a way to cope, and later, drugs also entered the picture.
