The Pittsburgh Steelers shocked the NFL when they announced that Wilson would be taking first-team reps in practice.
Fields has been the Steelers’ starter for the first six weeks of the season, and he has the team in a great position at 6-0.
However, there is a chance that his time as a starter is coming to an end, and he shared a cryptic post after the news.
“You’re ‘normal’ day is someone’s dream, so be thankful every day,” he wrote on Instagram.
The Steelers acquired both Fields and Wilson this offseason, and Wilson was originally tabbed to be the starter.
However, a preseason injury forced him off the field, and Fields was named the opening-game starter.
He has handled the quarterback responsibilities for six weeks now, and is excelling on the field for the Steelers.
Fields has 1,338 total yards, 10 total touchdowns, and only one interception so far this season.
That yardage total is more than Patrick Mahomes has for the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Steelers haven’t officially named Wilson the starter over Fields, but head coach Mike Tomlin said he is considering it.
“We’ll see where that leads us,” he said.
“I’ll acknowledge that Russ proved his health last week, and we’re looking hard at him this week.
“It is up for consideration.”
Steelers fans are adamantly against benching Fields, and shared their thoughts on social media.
“Just a terrible move. Fields has that team rolling,” one fan said.
“This is so stupid Fields has been playing just fine,” another fan said.
“This is what we call awful coaching,” a third fan said.
“This is so insanely stupid,” a fourth fan said.
“What an absolute joke. Fields has earned it,” a fifth fan said.
The Steelers face off against the New York Jets, and it isn’t clear who will be the starting quarterback.
