I’m a mum living in an old Edwardian house – my heating hacks saved us £15k, a Primark buy was life changing

IT’S that time of the year where the cooler days are here, and you’re starting to notice the temperature in your home is dropping.

And the last thing many people want to do is turn on the heating, especially now that the energy price cap was raised this month.

A mum has revealed how she managed to save £15k after discovering heating hacks[/caption]

But one homeowner discovered just the trick to help keep her energy bills low.

She took to Mumsnet to reveal some tips she already has done, whilst asking other parents for more advice and tips.

The mum, who has decided to remain anonymous, titled the post: “How to keep your house warm.”

She then wrote: “We live in an Edwardian house, large rooms with high ceilings and it’s very expensive to heat in the winter

“Last year with escalating costs we used a lot of heated throws and tried to stay in one room as much as possible but it was pretty miserable.

“It’s starting to get colder and I’m thinking about lower cost options to make things more comfortable this year without our bills going through the roof.

“We looked at replacing our single glazed windows last year and it was going to cost £15k so we didn’t go ahead.

“This year I am considering: Putting in secondary glazing as a cheaper alternative.

“Getting the boiler serviced (it’s not been serviced for five years) to make sure it is working optimally.

“Bleeding and desludging the radiators. We have one leaking too so will replace or repair it.

“We already have thick curtains in place. It’s just a cold house with thick walls.

“Even in the Summer it’s cold inside when it’s hot outside.”

Many people rushed to the comments section to share their advice, with one even offering a tip that can get bought from Primark

One wrote: “Draft excluders.

“You’ll be surprised at how much what escapes from the doors.”

A Mumsnet user suggested getting a dressing gown from Primark as they are “life changing”[/caption]

Another added: “You can get reflective panels that slot behind your radiators and reflect the heat back into the room.

“Also use draught excluder tape round the window. I have some really good stuff and it stops a lot of the cold.”

A third said: “Insulating wallpaper works really well, window double glazing film is a cheaper option.

“Foil insulation roll for behind radiators. Top up loft insulation.”

Whilst someone else added: “Primark dressing gowns. Life changing.”

5 Money-saving tips for autumn/winter

1. Draught-proof your home

It takes time and money to heat up your home, so it’s important that you do as much as you can to keep in the warmth. Close your doors and windows, and fill any gaps with a draught excluder.

2. Dial down your thermostat

According to Energy UK, turning down your thermostat by just one degree Celsius could cut your heating bill by up to 10%, and save you around £85 per year. Plus, if you don’t have a thermostat, installing one could save up to £70 per year!

3. Move furniture around

Make sure not big, bulky furniture like sofas are blocking radiators.

4. Wash clothes on a lower temp and add an extra spin

Unless it’s bedding, towels or really dirty items, dial down the temperature to 20 or 30 degrees, and do a double spin to remove excess water.

5. Heat the person not the home

There’s not point heating up a room that no one is sitting in, so be mindful about which radiators are on.
