“I don’t give a sh*t”: A Legendary ’90s Actor Even Martin Scorsese Admired Openly Called Clint Eastwood the Most Overrated Actor of Hollywood

Clint Eastwood is one of the most respected and admired figures in the film industry. On top of making some of the most critically acclaimed films from the 90s as a director, he also has several Oscar nods to prove his talents as an actor. For years, he has stood at the very peak of the film industry, having a say in some of the most impactful projects in Hollywood.

Considering the power and influence that he possesses, it is safe to assume that he is used to admiration and flattery. So much so, that very few have spoken ill of him in his decades-long career in the film industry. However, there was one actor who was not afraid to hold his tongue and express his true feelings towards Eastwood.

Ray Liotta’s Thoughts on Clint Eastwood

In 2017, Ray Liotta gave an interview with Watch What Happens: Live with Andy Cohen alongside his Shades of Blue co-star, Jennifer Lopez. During this, the two actors took part in a game of Plead the Fifth, where they were asked to give specific responses to questions about their personal lives. If one of them was not interested in answering a question, they could simply plead the fifth.

With these rules in place, the two stars were asked some deeply personal questions. Liotta was specifically asked about a co-star who he thought to be the worst kisser, as well as naming two of Lopez’s songs. While both answers to these questions were enough to find the actor in trouble, it was another question that brought out the most amount of gasps.

At one point during the interview, Liotta was asked to name the most overrated actor from the 80s and 90s. Without hesitation, he named Clint Eastwood as his candidate. Upon hearing the reactions that his answer brought out from the audience, he clarified that he did not care about the backlash.

Martin Scorsese’s Heartfelt Words About Ray Liotta

One would assume that calling someone like Clint Eastwood overrated would be a very bad move on Ray Liotta’s part. However, considering all the experience the actor had during his time in the film industry, it would be safe to assume that he was an excellent judge of talent. Before his untimely passing in 2022, he established a legacy that very few can top.

From starring in Goodfellas to being an integral part of Kevin Costner’s Field of Dreams and even being a part of the Hannibal film, he explored all that Hollywood had to offer him. Perhaps one of the closest bonds that he ended up making in the industry was with the legendary director, Martin Scorsese.

Although the pair only worked together once in their very long friendship, they seemed to be very close to each other. So much so, that Liotta was asked frequently if they would collaborate together again. However, it wasn’t until his passing that the subject was touched again by Scorsese in an op-ed for The Guardian.

We had many plans to work together again but the timing was always off, or the project wasn’t quite right. I regret that now. When I watched Ray as the divorce lawyer in Marriage Story – he’s genuinely scary in the role, which is precisely why he’s so funny – I remember feeling that I wanted to work with him again at this point in his life, to explore the gravity in his presence, so different from the young, sprightly actor he was when I met him.

Stating that he regrets not having worked with Liotta again, Scosese mentioned that, although they had discussed working together again several times over the years, they were simply unable to time it right with their busy schedules.
