Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine was hugely successful in theaters. The billion-dollar hit movie had eyes on where they were spending the budget, especially when it came to the superhero suits. While Reynolds donned his iconic red and black suit, Jackman also wore a suit for the first time in the film. He wore a yellow & dark blue suit for most of the film.
However, the film also had to introduce several variants of the Wolverine, and one of them wore the comic-accurate brown and yellow suit. Interestingly, the movie’s editors revealed that the suit cost almost $100,000 to make. If you think it was too expensive, wait until you hear what Shazam’s suit cost the production.
Hugh Jackman’s Brown And Yellow Suit Cost $100,000 But Was Still Cheaper Than Shazam! Suit
One of the most iconic scenes from Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine was Ryan Reynolds‘ Merc with a Mouth meeting up with the different Wolverine variants. Fans saw Hugh Jackman in several attires and sizes, alongside a cameo from Henry Cavill. Interestingly, much of this idea was developed when the film’s production halted during last year’s strikes.
According to the film’s editors Dean Zimmerman and Shane Reid, they went through a list of comic book versions to bring them onto the screen. They shared with Comic Book Movie that the only thing stopping them from executing their grand plan was time and budget issues.
They went on to reveal that the brown and tan suit that Jackman wore for just seconds in the film cost them $100,000 to make. They shared (via Comic Book Movie):
Hence, they had to get creative with the different variants and their costumes. The editors recalled how Jackman was asked to go shirtless for one variant and to wear an old man’s makeup for another. Looking back, the $100,000 suit was probably worth it in terms of fan service.
Interestingly, the cost of Jackman’s suit comes nowhere near the insane cost of Zachary Levi‘s Shazam! suit. While the first film of this superhero was one of the success stories in the DCEU, the sequel film dropped the ball and came crashing down. The suit in the film gets some visual updates throughout the film and we get to see at least 10 different suits in the film.
The film’s costume designer Leah Butler told TotalFilm during an interview that each of the suits cost over a million dollars to make (via Syfy). According to Butler, the spandex suit has a lot of electronics involved to light up the central bolt and gauntlets. She shared that it took 16 weeks to build the costume, which alone explains the massive cost.
The Most Expensive Marvel Superhero Suit Costs Much Less Than the Shazam! Suit
According to The Richest, the second most expensive superhero suit, which also happens to be a Marvel suit, costs only $325,000. The suit in question is the iconic red and gold Iron Man suit adorned by the Oscar-winning actor Robert Downey Jr. in the MCU. It has an insane story behind its valuation.
The red and gold suit was apparently stolen from a storage facility in LA. The cost of the suit appeared in the official report filed by LAPD (via Esquire). Here are some of the costliest superhero suits in films:
Superhero Suits | Cost |
Shazam! | $1 million |
Iron Man – Red & Gold suit | $325,000 |
Black Panther | $300,000 |
Christian Bale’s Dark Knight | $250,000 |
Captain America | $228,000 |
Evil Superman (DCEU) | $200,000 |
Star-Lord (mask) | $160,000 |
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man | $130,000 |
Batfleck | $100,000 |
Wolverine – Brown & Tan Suit | $100,000 |
Deadpool & Wolverine had its VOD release recently, where it has been making waves. Fans can catch Shazam! movie and its sequel on Max.
