Eiichiro Oda Has Hidden Scopper Gaban’s Location in Plain Sight: One Piece Theory

One Piece mysteries continue to pile up further and further now that fans have enough time to reflect on previous arcs. As announced on Oct 13, Toei Animation’s One Piece anime will go on a hiatus and will not return until April 2025. In the meantime, the studio will remaster the Fishman Island arc, which will be condensed into 21 episodes instead of the original 57 episodes to fill up the 6-month break.

On the other hand, the manga will also go on a 2-week break and will return on Nov 11, 2024. Meanwhile, fans will fill the void by using their big brains to cook up some weird theories. This one, in particular, picks up clues from the manga and claims to have found out the location of Scopper Gaban.

In One Piece, there are 5 notable characters who discovered the truth behind the Void Century, the Ancient Weapons, and the family of “D”: Gol D. Roger, Silvers Rayleigh, Kozuki Oden, Scopper Gaban, and Crocus. Scopper Gaban is a former member of Roger’s Pirate crew and was present during the God Valley Incident alongside his captain Gol D. Roger and fellow subordinate Silvers Rayleigh, excitedly ready to engage in combat.

He was also present when Gol D. Roger found the One Piece and witnessed that iconic laugh of Roger. This led Roger to name the island “Laugh Tale” after what he considered a “funny story,” referring to whatever happened to Joy Boy.

This particular flashback happened during the Wano arc and in the same arc, Luffy activated his Gear 5 against Kaido and revealed to the world that he was Joy Boy. At least that’s what people are speculating about. Scopper Gaban may not be a very popular character but he’s pretty important as he’s one of the few Roger pirates who may be still alive. Fans know that Gol D. Roger and Oden are dead while Rayleign and Crocus are alive and retired.

Crocus is right at the beginning, Reverse Mountain, which is the first location anyone entering the Grand Line visits where he sees all the rookies who enter. Whereas Rayleigh is found at the halfway mark, Sabaody. Anyone who makes it through the first half of the Grand Line will end up there and Rayleigh will be able to see them.

So if these characters are placed at the beginning, and in the middle, it makes sense for the last to be at the very end of the Grand Line. Therefore, when it comes to Scopper Gaban, he is nowhere to be found and the Marines have declared him dead. However, fans suspect he’s pretty much alive and is waiting for Luffy and the Straw Hats at Lodestar Island, the second-to-last island in the Grand Line.

Series creator Eiichiro Oda introduced Rayleigh and Scopper Gaban in Chapter 19 and fans know how important Rayleigh is in the series. So it’s natural for them to think that Scopper Gaban will be important too. It would be very strange for Oda to have these two characters planned essentially from the very beginning, and for Scopper to be the one who never comes up in anything.

He is the last major member of Roger’s crew that fans haven’t met in the story outside of flashbacks, and that’s why he’s hyped up a lot in the fandom. All of the Roger pirates gave the strawhats something that allowed them to continue their adventure. For instance, Crocus gave them their log pose to navigate the grand line while Rayleigh coated their ship so they could go to Fishman Island. So, it’s possible that Scopper may hold the eternal pose to the location of the fourth poneglyph.

Lodestar is probably one of the biggest wild cards left in the manga. It could either be incredibly important or completely skippable for the Strawhats. This is the island where most pirate crews find out about the Poneglyphs in the first place. Not to mention the long poses and the magnetic fields attracting the pirates to the island. There’s something on that island Oda is cooking up and fans can’t wait to find out.

One Piece is available to watch on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
