Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero – What Are Skill Points and How to Use Them in Battles

If you’ve been wondering “What are Skill Points?” when playing Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, then you’re in the right place! These are an important aspect of the game and will heavily influence every battle, no matter if it is Online, Offline, or Episodic.

Skill Points are not a new addition to the franchise, as they have been present since the Tenkaichi era. However, they have acquired a number of new uses in the game, and we are going to show you how to make the most of them to emerge victorious from every clash.

What Are Skill Points in Sparking Zero?

Hit and Bergamo engaging in a battle in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
The Skill Point is the number under your characters health bar, and the blue bar shows how close you are to acquiring a new one.

Skill Points are the numbers ranging from one to five under your health bar in the HUD during a match in Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero. These points will passively replenish throughout the match and will reach a maximum number of five. The rate at which they replenish can be enhanced with specific Ability Items, but overall, it won’t be too long before you reach the maximum.

Every character will earn and can use Skill Points in the game. Increasing your Proficiency with a character will not increase the rate at which you acquire Skill Points.

Even collecting Super Dragon Balls and summoning Super Shenron won’t affect this rate, making it an even playing field for Online battles. There is an Ability Item called Dragon Spirit, which players can equip to increase the rate at which this meter is filled. You can also fill up your Skill meter quicker by consistently dealing damage.

Tip
It’s a good rule of thumb to have 2 Skill Points on hand during a battle to be used for emergencies.

Skill Points can be used in battle for several reasons, such as Fusions, Transformations, Deflection, and Nullifications. Character skills are also tied to Skill Points, as it’s not just your Ki which you will need to charge up before initiating certain skills.

Some moves will take more Skill Points than others, such as jumping straight to Goku Super Saiyan Blue from base form or Yajirobe’s Senzu Bean skill.

How to Use Skill Points in Sparking Zero?

Your Skill Points will determine many aspects of the battle, including your attacks.

Skill Points can be used during a battle to activate skills, perform transformations and fusions, and execute evasive maneuvers. The cost of the Skill Points will depend on the move being performed. Goku transforming from his base form to Super Saiyan might need just one, but going all the way to Super Saiyan Blue from base would need as many as 3.

Transformation

Transforming in Sparking Zero allows players to unlock new moves.

Transforming in Sparking Zero allows you to enjoy all the increased damage and new moves without having to worry about an increased DP investment. Base-form characters cost less than their transformed variants.

Once you have enough Skill Points, you will notice a small glowing arrow near your HUD cluster. This means you have an available Transformation, and you can choose to do so by hitting the Up arrow on the D-Pad and choosing your form.

Fusion

Fusing two characters will award the player with a health buff mid-battle.

Fusing two characters requires you to play a team battle with the appropriate character variants. This means you can’t fuse Vegeta (Super) with Goku from the Saiyan Saga. With enough Skill Points, you will see the same glowing arrow as for a fusion.

Hit the Up arrow on your D-pad and the bumper button to see your available fusions before making your choice. Choosing the more powerful version of your Fusion, such as Gotenks Super Saiyan 3, will cost even more Skill Points.

Sparking Mode

Sparking! Mode allows players to dominate the battlefield temporarily.

Sparking Mode refers to the state you enter when you super charge all of your Ki gauges. You’ll want to be in this mode as often as possible, given that you can fire off your Ultimate attack whenever you want, and also chain your attacks into a long combo for massive damage. You will need to have at least one Skill Point to enter Sparking! so keep an eye on that number.

Deflections, Nullifications, and Counters

Hold your Perception button with 2 Skill Points to deflect large beams.

Incoming attacks can be dealt with in a variety of ways in Sparking Zero. The most common way would be to simply dash out of the attack’s path, but there are other methods.

If you’re in the air, holding down the Perception button will cause you to swat away any incoming Beam or Blast. Doing the same on the ground will result in the character Nullifying the attack. Both of these require two Skill Points to perform.

Holding down the Perception button will also allow you to evade a Charged melee attacks. This will cost you a single Skill Point. Performing a Revenge Counter is a great way to break your opponent’s flow, but this too will require two Skill Points to perform.

While you could use Sonic Sway to evade these attacks without the Skill Point cost, a Revenge Counter allows you to punish your opponent.

Battle Skills

Yajirobe’s Senzu Bean skill comes with a high cost but makes him a very useful fighter in DP Battles.

Aside from the attack skills, each character comes with a unique battle skill inspired by their actions in the anime. While Krillin can use a Solar Flare, Yajirobe can pull out a Senzu Bean to heal himself amid the battle!

Each of these skills requires a certain number of Skill Points, which will be denoted by the number beside the skill in the menu. The more useful a skill is, the higher the cost, as Yajirobe’s Senzu Bean costs an entire 5 Skill Points!

Those are the main ways you will be utilizing your Skill Points in Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero. According to you, which one should people be saving up for? Let us know in the comments below and check out our other Sparking Zero guides for more tips and tricks.
