Cristin Milioti Was a Crying Mess After Knowing What How I Met Your Mother Had Planned for Her: ‘I just burst into tears’

Cristin Milioti may have been gaining tremendous acclaim as of late for her outstanding performance in The Penguin, but the roots of her true recognition lie far behind in time. In the most unexpected manner that left even the hardcore fans of the saga baffled, she came out as the mother in the season finale of the smash hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother.

But, as fans must already know, while the series launched her to become a household name in the entertainment industry, Milioti’s character also suffered a rather cruel fate. While this garnered mixed reactions from fans worldwide, the most baffling aspect of it all was that it actually left the 39-year-old actress into a crying mess when she found out what the saga had planned for her!

Of course, a lot of fans were heartbroken at the end of How I Met Your Mother when they realized that, after trying to find the mother of his kids for nearly 10 years, Josh Radnor‘s Ted Mosby lost her to an unspecified terminal disease. While Ted does end up with the other woman he is in love with, none could have been more crushed at it all than the one who played the mother herself.

In an interview with Vulture, Milioti came clean about how devastated she was to know that the real fate of her character was her death from an unnamed chronic disease. She said, “I just burst into tears as soon as they told me. I had to write an e-mail later that night to [co-creator] Craig [Thomas] being like, ‘Hey, I’m really sorry I cried all over you at the Christmas party.’”

While that must have been embarrassing, Cristin Milioti‘s grief-stricken reaction to it was rather justified as well. As she continued to explain in a perspective most fans would agree with: “At first I was like, ‘But wait, no, he finally found her.’ I had just caught up on all the seasons, so I said, ‘But this dude’s been looking for the mother of his kids forever.’”

And yet, as sad as it all was, this change was also necessary, and the sitcom’s co-creator Craig Thomas along with actor Radnor ensured to make Milioti understand this. According to their reasoning, they just wanted it to be “more lifelike” and emphasize just how volatile and unpredictable life could be, with things taking the most unexpected turns at the most unanticipated moments.

When The Penguin actress posed the question of just how unfair it would be to Ted to lose the woman he had spent so long searching for so easily, both Thomas and Radnor’s response was: ‘No, they had a wonderful marriage together and they had these two beautiful children and it’s still super sad, but we want it to be lifelike.’

Apparently, even though it may have sucked to many, the truth was: They simply wanted to show the unpredictability of life. As Milioti continued to share and explain how she understood it all:

“The way that [Craig Thomas] and Josh [Radnor] explained it to me was, ‘Well, Ted has two loves, and basically what we’re trying to say is that life comes at you in ways you can never expect.’ Once they put it that way, I understood it more. I was like, that’s really involved and awesome.”

That said, this was all destined from the beginning, all the way from Marshall losing his dad to Cobie Smulders‘ Robin – who ends up marrying Ted, by the way, for those who may not know – finding out she couldn’t have kids. And this epic plan of what it all settled down to, for one, had Cristin Milioti’s mother hopping along on board of HIMYM without a second thought.

How I Met Your Mother can currently be streamed on Netflix.
