Who was Roy Raymond? The triumph and tragedy of Victoria’s Secret’s founder

WHEN you think of Victoria’s Secret, images of supermodels wearing nothing but lingerie and angel wings come to mind.

However, the underwear giant’s history goes back long before the famous catwalk show was even thought of, and it all started with Roy Raymond.

The famous brand was launched in the late 70s

Victoria’s Secret was set up by American businessman Roy Raymond and his wife, Gaye, in 1977 after he struggled to buy lingerie for her.

He reportedly felt uncomfortable in underwear stores because of how frumpy the selection was that was on offer.

Roy also felt that the female staff didn’t take him seriously.

Speaking to Newsweek at the time, he said: “When I tried to buy lingerie for my wife, I was faced with racks of terry-cloth robes and ugly floral-print nylon nightgowns.

“And I always had the feeling the department store sales women thought I was an unwelcome intruder.”

With this in mind, Roy set about creating Victoria’s Secret.

Victoria’s Secret’s is born

Fans of the brand have often wondered how the name Victoria’s Secret came about.

The lingerie shop is named after the Victorian era, and the secret nature of underwear during that time.

Roy also wanted to emulate in his stores, the vibe of boudoirs in that time period.

He wanted his brand to evoke the sense of Victorian sophistication while being suggestive of women’s ‘secret’ underwear.

Stylish women of this time wore an array of undergarments, from corsets to petticoats to suspenders.

As this clothing was kept a secret under their long dresses, the idea of this lent itself to the name of the lingerie brand and Victoria’s Secret was born.

First ever store

Roy opened his first Victoria’s Secret store in the suburbs of San Francisco in 1977.

In order to do this, the Stamford graduate took out a $40K loan.

Believing in the store’s success he also borrowed the same amount of money from his relatives.

The idea turned out to be successful and by 1982 Roy had opened six stores.

He also launched catalog sales, where people could purchase lingerie from their homes.

Tragic death

Despite the company’s success, Roy faced financial difficulties, which saw him sell Victoria’s Secret to Leslie Wexner, the owner of The Limited stores.

The sale went through and the company was sold for $4 million.

The brand then branched out globally, and was soon worth a lot more than it had been sold for.

Sadly in 1993, Roy took his own life.

Victoria’s Secret as it is today

In modern day, Victoria’s Secret is known for its catalogue of supermodels aka Angels, and of course their annual fashion show.

Over the years huge stars like Tyra Banks, Gigi Hadid, Adriana Lima and Heidi Klum have strutted their stuff at the famous event.

The highly-anticipated show promotes the lingerie giant’s new seasons of lingerie, swimwear and loungewear.

Victoria’s Secret now has stores all over the world and is estimated to be worth around £2 billion.

Fan-favorite Ford SUV gets major interior upgrade for 2025 with Google and Zoom options – but app access is limited

A POPULAR Ford SUV will see a major interior upgrade in 2025 to incorporate Google and Zoom options as part of a new tech package.

The carmaker has managed to pack in all the extra features while maintaining a “hard cap” on the price.

The 2025 Ford Explorer is set for a design refresh[/caption]

Most of the changes will come in the interior[/caption]

The model will be equipped with Google Assitant, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto[/caption]

The Explorer has been on the market since 1991 and is consistently one of Ford’s best-sellers in North America.

Produced at the brand’s Chicago factory, it is even sold to law enforcement departments across the country as the Ford Police Interceptor Utility.

The model was renewed for a sixth generation in 2022, while a hybrid version was introduced in 2022.

But the 2025 model year will see a mid-generation design refresh, with particular focus on the interior.

The most significant addition is a completely digital dashboard, with everything controlled from a 13.2″ touchscreen coupled with a 12.3″ LED gauge panel.

This also incorporates Google Assistant, which brings with it the full range of apps from the platform.

The voice control software can handle most driver commands, while there’s also Apple CarPlay or Android Auto for those who prefer to do it manually.

There’s even Zoom video conferencing software folded into the package.

However, as you might expect, this does come with some restrictions, with drivers only able to use the video call feature while parked safely.

That’s not to say there have been no exterior tweaks, though, as Ford seeks to freshen up the model’s look.

Customers can now pick from some new paint job options, while the grille has been enlarged and the head and tail lights redesigned.

One of the most unexpected changes is the removal of the locking differential, which reduces the Explorer’s off-road abilities quite substantially.

The all-wheel-drive system and V6 engine options mean it’s still suited to the occasional dirt track, but the more hardcore stuff is best left to others.

On the bright side, Ford have managed to keep a “hard cap” on the model’s price, with the Explorer famously described as the “fastest SUV under $60,000”.

The base level Active trim is priced from $39,755, while the ST version is $44,515 and the range-topping Platinum variant clocks in at $52,150.

It comes after Google unveiled a free feature which could help drivers avoid speeding tickets.

Diddy’s male ‘child sex assault victim’ PICTURED aged 16 with star at ‘White Party’ hours before singer ‘assaulted him’

A MAN accusing Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs of groping him when he was a child has been pictured with the rapper before the alleged assault.

The unnamed John Doe is one of over 100 alleged victims listed in a slew of lawsuits that accuse Diddy of crimes including rape, sexual trafficking and racketeering.

The filing alleges that Diddy groped his privates at one of star’s infamous White Parties in 1998 when John Doe was just 16 years old.

A photograph included in the suit, filed in New York on Monday, shows Diddy with his arm around the teen after they met at the Hamptons event.

It marks the first child sex assault claim against Diddy and said he dubbed the act a “rite of passage” for breaking into the music industry.

Diddy’s White Parties were infamous in celebrity circles and were attended by hordes of A-List stars in the 90s.

John Doe’s lawsuit claims the parties were a key part of the alleged assaults.

The court filing read: “[He] would tell victims, ”this is what it takes to be famous, what are you willing to do to become a star?

“There existed something sinister – a dark underbelly of crime, sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, bribery and prostitution.

“Combs is a menace to society, women and children.”

Diddy denies the allegations against him.

John Doe was invited to one of the notorious White Parties while living in New York City as a teen.

The filing read: “When he received the invitation, he felt like he finally had the opportunity to rub shoulders with the who’s who of the industry.

“He thought it could be his chance to break into the music industry.

“As John Doe entered, he spotted countless celebrities and A-listers who were from the music and entertainment industry.

“He recognized faces he had seen on TV and on the big screen.

“The young boy was making his way through the crowd and heading toward the restroom when he ‘unexpectedly bumped into Combs’.

“Shocked, John Doe found himself face to face with Combs, a titan in the music industry, standing right in front of him at his own party.”

The picture apparently captured the moment John Doe encountered Diddy – showing them in a vast garden dressed all in white.

John Doe’s filing continues: “Combs took an interest in John Doe and wanted to talk to him.

“They walked to a more private area near the portable restrooms brought in for the party.

“There, John Doe told Combs he was a big fan of Combs and shared his dreams of becoming a star.

“Combs smiled, telling him he had potential and ‘the look.’ When John Doe admitted his voice was not great, Combs assured him that did not matter.

“Combs abruptly told John Doe that he needed to drop his pants.'”

The suit then goes on to describe in detail the alleged assault – saying that John Doe removed his trousers because of “fear, anxiety and the imbalanced power dynamic between himself and Combs”.

It also claims that some of the those accusing Diddy of assault have said he used “lotions or similar body oils… laced with GBH” on his victims.

Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GBH) is commonly known as a “date rape” drug because it is hard to detect when slipped into a drink and can be used as an anaesthetic – producing feelings of drowsiness or relaxation.

In March this year cops raided Diddy’s Los Angeles and Florida homes, seizing drugs, videos and over 1,000 bottles of baby oil.

Lawyer Tony Buzbee is representing some 120 people in lawsuits against the musician.

He has repeatedly said more high-profile people could be named in the documents as the investigation moves on.

Some 25 of those he is representing claim they were minors when they were allegedly abused.

The number of allegations against Diddy began to spiral when a video showing the rapper beating his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in a hotel in 2016 was made public this year.

On September 17 he was charged with three federal counts, including sex trafficking, for allegedly forcing victims to take part in drug-fuelled sex parties he called “Freak Offs.”

The Sun has reached out to Diddy’s legal team for comment.

Diddy's downfall

BY Forest McFarland, Senior News Reporter

BEFORE Sean “Diddy” Combs’ arrest on Monday night, it had been highly speculated that the rap star would find himself in custody after he was repeatedly hit with disturbing accusations – and had two of his mansions raided by the feds.

His mounting legal troubles finally came to a head on September 17, when he was charged with three federal counts, including sex trafficking, for allegedly forcing victims to take part in drug-fueled sex parties he called “Freak Offs.”

Hours before his arrest, The U.S. Sun exclusively revealed the feds investigating Combs were secretly liaising with Tupac Shakur murder prosecutors on gangland activities.

The development also came after Combs was named 77 times in documents submitted by prosecutors in the Tupac murder case.

Aside from the Tupac probe, Combs was already facing a slew of lawsuits, including one he settled with his ex, Cassie Ventura, after she accused him of rape and abuse.

Disturbing hotel surveillance video from 2016 showed Combs chasing Cassie down and then punching, kicking, and beating her in a hallway.

Two months earlier, in March 2024, two of Combs’ mansions were raided by federal investigators, who seized three AR-15s, drugs, and 1,000 bottles of lube which were part of his “Freak Off” supplies.

In addition to his federal criminal charges, Combs also faces a handful of lawsuits with allegations of sexual assault, harassment, and sex trafficking dating back to the early 1990s.

Music producer Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones filed one suit in February 2024, claiming Combs forced him to hire sex workers and participate in sex acts while he worked on his latest album.

Combs has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to the federal sex trafficking charges against him, but his battle is far from over.

He faces life in prison if he’s convicted on all counts

‘Diva’ Meghan Markle ‘didn’t like what she saw or her wings being clipped’, claims Jennie Bond on Kate Middleton feud

MEGHAN Markle has been branded a “diva” who “didn’t like her wings being clipped”, according to esteemed royal commentator Jennie Bond.

The former BBC royal correspondent insisted that the Duchess of Sussex could have been an asset for the royal family, but she wasn’t happy during her time there.

Speaking to Bella, Jennie claimed: “Meghan could have been such a credit to the royal family – she is an independent, forthright woman with her own career, her own thoughts, her own charities and causes.

“She could have been exactly what a modern monarchy needs. I think the monarchy didn’t act as carefully as they should have done.

“But Meghan is by all accounts a bit of a diva. She didn’t like what she saw, and she didn’t like her wings being clipped.”

This comes as Meghan and Kate have both returned to the public eye in separate continents.

The Princess of Wales has undergone two recent official visits following her announcement that she has finished her chemotherapy treatment.

The first was meeting cancer-stricken 16-year-old Liz Hatton, and the second was sitting down with victims of the Southport attack.

Meanwhile, we saw the Duchess of Sussex looking glamorous in a recycled red dress on the red carpet at the LA Children’s Hospital gala earlier this month.

The swanky appearance was Meghan’s first solo venture in months.

Jennie added: “Catherine and Meghan are indeed two very different women and are now on very different paths.

“Everything Catherine does is to help others: the disadvantaged, the young and now those suffering from cancer.

“It’s not for money, or fame or self aggrandisement. It is to help people who are in trouble or difficulty and to do good.”

The royal expert claimed Meghan is also using her “star power” to draw attention to good causes, but said she is “very active in the commercial world”, and is also pursuing financial ventures to support their new life in California.

Although the two women both married into the royal family, they appear to be on very different paths, with Kate focusing on the future of the monarchy now doctors have given her the all clear to phase back into work.

Meanwhile, Meghan’s upcoming ventures include a Netflix cooking show about friendship and her lifestyle brand American Orchard Riviera.

Tense friendship

The royal wives have had a number of alleged moments of tension of the years, including Meghan telling Oprah Winfrey Kate that made her cry just days before her wedding.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry recalled in his bombshell memoir Spare that the women had a bust-up after Meghan made a comment about Kate’s hormones.

During an interview with The Cut, Meghan was asked if she thought there was hope of a reconciliation between her and the rest of the royal family.

Meghan said: “I think forgiveness is really important. It takes a lot more energy to not forgive.

“But it takes a lot of effort to forgive.

“I’ve really made an active effort, especially knowing that I can say anything.

“I have a lot to say until I don’t. Do you like that? Sometimes, as they say, the silent part is still part of the song.”

Meghan Markle's 'jarring' first meeting with Kate Middleton

MEGHAN and Kate are said to have had a rather fractious relationship, and the American actress revealed what happened on their first meeting.

After announcing their engagement, Meghan and Harry gave an interview to the BBC’s Mishal Husain from their home Nottingham Cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace.

During the interview, Meghan praised the Royal Family, The Queen and her future sister-in-law Kate Middleton for all being so welcoming.

However, Meghan claimed there was a difference between how formal she and Kate were behind closed doors.

In her Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, the Duchess said: “Even when Will and Kate came over and I was meeting her for the first time I remember I was in ripped jeans, I was barefoot.

“Like I was a hugger, I have always been a hugger I didn’t realise that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.

“I started to understand that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside, that there is a forward facing way of being and then you close the door and think ‘OK we can relax now’.

“But that formality carries over on both sides and that was surprising to me.”
