The Sun crowned newspaper of the year and wins gong for best scoop for groundbreaking Huw Edwards investigation

THE Sun was crowned newspaper of the year today in recognition of our agenda-setting journalism.

We also won Best Scoop for our groundbreaking 18-month investigation into shamed BBC presenter Huw Edwards, who paid tens of thousands of pounds to a vulnerable young man in return for sexual images.

Chief Sunday Reporter Scarlet Howes, who led our coverage of the Edwards’ scandal, was also Highly Commended as Best Reporter in the London Press Club awards yesterday.

Last year we revealed how a BBC presenter had paid a 17-year-old with a drug dependency in exchange for explicit pictures.

Then suspended from his role at the publicly-funded broadcaster, Edwards was named as the subject of our story by his wife as he sought treatment for mental health issues.

The teenager’s parents had complained to the BBC over concern for their vulnerable son but the organisation had failed to act on it.

Our story made headlines around the world with some directing criticism at The Sun – but we stood firm and defended our journalism and the importance of giving a voice to the parents at the centre of the scandal.

In July of this year Edwards, 63, was charged for making indecent images of children as young as seven, with six in the worst category.

Last month he was sentenced to a six-month jail sentence suspended for two years for the horrific crimes, a staggering fall from grace for the man who announced the death of the Queen to the nation.

At the prestigious awards, The Sun’s Royal Editor Matt Wilkinson was also nominated for Multimedia Journalist of the Year for our new show The Royal Exclusive.

Defence Editor Jerome Starkey was nominated for the Cudlipp Award for investigative journalism for his scoop on a chief constable who had lied about his war record.

Chief Political Correspondent Jack Elsom was nominated for Political Journalist of The Year.

Accepting the Best Newspaper award at a ceremony in central London today, Sun Editor Victoria Newton said: “I just want to echo really what Scarlet Howes said earlier, Rupert Murdoch always instils in me that the most important thing to do as Sun Editor is to give a voice to the voiceless.

“I think that’s what we tried to do with the Huw Edwards story against massive opposition.

“Freedom of speech is something that I hope we all continue to fight for in this room and most importantly I want to say an incredible thank you to my brilliant brilliant Sun team, I couldn’t have done any of it without them, they are magnificent.”

She added: “From showbiz and sport, to politics and campaigns, no other news brand has broken more exclusives than the Sun this year, or done more to set the news agenda.

“I am especially proud of the work we have done to hold the powerful to account, and to give a voice to the voiceless.

“This was true of our revelations on Huw Edwards, in particular, but also of countless other public interest stories.

“I am grateful to a brilliant, hard working team which is passionate about press freedom.

“Most of all, I would like to thank our fantastic and loyal readers, who we are here to entertain and serve.

“They are – and will always be – at the heart of everything we do.”

Scarlet said: “This story has always been about giving a voice to two desperate parents who were time and time again not listened to. They bravely spoke out about one of the most powerful men at the BBC.

“It’s been an incredibly tough journey as we all know but we never faltered. We knew our story was right. Their accounts never changed and neither did our evidence. I am so proud to work amongst such incredible journalists. Their doggedness in holding power to account, particularly my Editor-in-Chief Victoria and Ben O’Driscoll, is inspiring.

“I know the parents will be delighted with this as they will see it as a sign that they have finally been listened to and their claims validated. I would like to thank them for trusting us with the responsibility of such a powerful story.”

NFL make major broadcasting change to Week 8 in brutal put-down of Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts

THE NFL made an eye-opening change to their broadcast schedule – and it affects star quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts.

The move has been made for Week 8 as the two NFL Pro Bowlers play against each other.

The NFL game between Burrow‘s Cincinnati Bengals and HurtsPhiladelphia Eagles has been swapped to accommodate a rookie battle between Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels.

The Chicago Bears vs. the Washington Commanders was originally set for 1 pm Eastern.

The NFL decided to display the star rookie quarterback talents in a later TV slot at 4:25 pm.

As a result, the Bengals’ trip to the Eagles will be shown in an earlier spot at 1:00 pm.

Both Williams and Daniels have had impressive starts in 2024.

Williams has thrown for nine passing touchdowns and five interceptions, while Daniels has 1,404 passing yards, eight total touchdowns, and just two interceptions.

The USC product Williams was taken with the No. 1 overall pick by the Bears and the LSU product Daniels was selected with the second overall pick by the Commanders.

The NFL has also taken into account the fact that Chicago and Washington have winning records.

Both the Bears and the Commanders have a 4-2 record.

The Bengals, meanwhile, are currently 2-4, and the Eagles are currently 3-2 for the season.

And Hurts has seen himself struggle so far as he has just six passing touchdowns on four interceptions.

Burrow has played to his standards, throwing for 12 touchdowns and totaling just two interceptions in six games.

Still, NFL fans were in agreement with the schedule decision.

“The 4:25 spot grabs most of the country, good move, great game,” one commented.

“Hurts sucks man, his team isn’t good, and his coach is a weirdo. No one wants to watch that sideshow,” another wrote.

“Caleb vs. Jayden is a cool game so it makes sense,” a third added.

Week 7 will see the Eagles face the divisional rival New York Giants and the Browns take on Cleveland Browns.

Both will be at 1:00 pm.

The Bears will be on the bye and the Commanders will host the Carolina Panthers.

Conor McGregor’s UFC return plans collapse AGAIN as new opponent shatters hopes of February fight

CONOR MCGREGOR’s latest plans for his long-awaited UFC return have seemingly gone up in smoke – AGAIN.

McGregor, 36 was due to make his cage comeback in June against Michael Chandler but was forced out of their Sin City showdown with a broken left pinky toe.

But ‘The Hangman’ insists he WON’T be fighting the UFC icon in February[/caption]

The Irishman exclusively revealed to SunSport in July that he’d pivoted to a December return, although UFC bigwig Dana White insisted last month that the promotion’s poster boy won’t be back until 2025.

McGregor claimed at the weekend that his rescheduled return would pit him against Dan Hooker in a Saudi Arabia showdown on February 1.

But fan favourite Hooker insists he WON’T be fighting the Dubliner in a Riyadh rumble due to his wife Helena expecting their second child.

‘The Hangman’ told Helen Yee: “I’m good to go in January or March.

“The missus is due [for a baby in] February, so no can go.

“I’ve got a little girl on the way.

“You’d even turn down a big fight with McGregor for [the birth of your child]. You’re not missing that. No panties are coming off in February.

“[McGregor’s] busy, he’s got money coming out of his ears – if I had that amount of money in the bank, you wouldn’t see me anywhere near a fistfight.”

McGregor’s showdown with Chandler is seemingly dead in the water following the former Bellator lightweight champion’s decision to rematch Charles Oliveira at UFC 309 next month.

Inside McGregor's Notorious lifestyle

With more sides to his personality than an Octagon, Conor McGregor's rise has been an enthralling watch.

Going from UFC icon to entrepreneur and Hollywood star, the Irishman has transcended the sport he helped bring to the masses.

He has four children with fiancee Dee Devlin and the family enjoy a lavish lifestyle.

McGregor has not fought in UFC since breaking his leg in a trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier in 2021.

That has not stopped him amassing a net worth of over £150m thanks to his Proper No Twelve whiskey and fashion line.

And he is due to return to the Octagon at UFC 303 in an eagerly-awaited headline clash with Michael Chandler.

McGregor also starred alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the Amazon Prime remake of classic movie Road House, although he is dreading his mum seeing one X-rated scene.

Notorious turned up to the premiere in a £60,000 suit that was outdone by his £460k watch.

The only thing sharper than his fashion sense is his tongue and the Dubliner has several bitter spats under his belt, including with UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov.

That row led to one of his biggest controversies in 2018 as he travelled 3,000 miles to confront Khabib in a vicious attack on his bus.

He pleaded guilty to assault after punching a man in a pub in 2018 and had his £150k Bentley seized by police for driving offences four years later.

Joe Rogan lashed out at McGregor in a four-letter outburst and the Irishman has also fired shots at Jake Paul, KSI and Tommy Fury.

Boxing great Floyd Mayweather also has McGregor on his enemy list after the pair clashed in a cross-sport bout in 2017.

Read all of our latest Conor McGregor stories.

And even White is in the dark over who will be standing opposite Mystic Mac when he eventually returns.

He recently told Kevin Iole: “I have no idea [who he’ll fight].

“Like I said to Kevin today, you know, Conor will fight in 2025.

“So whoever is – however it plays out, as we lead up to him being ready, I have no clue.”

He added: “I said that Conor wasn’t fighting until 2025. It is October 1st of 2024.

Conor McGregor has plenty of time … I’m gonna go with 2025. Yeah. 2025.”

When asked who will welcome him back to the cage, former two-division champion McGregor told DAZN last month: “We will see

“My opponent that I had scheduled… it is what it is. I take it on board and rock on.

“My job is to go to the gym and be in shape, whenever it is and wherever it is. I will be 100 per cent ready.”

McGregor, the UFC’s first-ever simultaneous two-weight champion, hasn’t set foot inside the octagon since breaking his left leg in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier in July 2021.

Who is James Robertson featured in Netlix’s I am a Killer season 1 – and where is he now?

JAMES Robertson is a convicted killer and burglar who was the focus of the very first episode of Netflix’s I am a Killer.

The explosive episode made headlines, after it examined James’ murder of his cellmate as part of a bid to be put on death row.

James first went to prison at the age of 17

The new series of Netflix’s I am a Killer, which landed on the streaming service on October 16, 2024, will feature a new batch of convicted killers.

Here’s everything you need to know about James Robertson and his plan to be put on death row.

Life of crime

Crime had been a part of James’ life since he was young, but his cousin, Darrell, claims that he wasn’t “born evil”.

Darrell told the Netflix documentary makers that he believed James’ problems began when he was a toddler, because he had “never been loved”.

Years of alleged neglect manifested in the 1980s when James committed a string of violent crimes, including burglary and aggravated assault.

Shortly after his 17th birthday, he found himself jailed for his crimes and sentenced to ten years in prison.

He had fifteen years added on to his sentence when he was blamed for the death of a man in prison, but James maintains that he was innocent of that crime.

Then, he stole a guard’s gun in a crime that saw him have five more years added onto his sentence.

James became known for his violent behavior and tried to stab several other inmates, forcing the prison guards to send him to close managed confinement, a form of near-solitary confinement.

Once there, James remained by himself for 23 hours a day and only received six hours a week for exercise.

Luxuries including his TV were taken away and he was given restricted work opportunities in the prison.

James said that isolation made him lose “all motivation”
A+E

Death row wish

James spent twenty years in close managed confinement which he said made him “mad”.

He told his interviewer on I am a Killer: “You just lose all motivation.

“The guards humiliate you all the time and treat you like you’re a bug.

“You’re sat in that cell all day. It’s inhumane.”

“Finally, I got mad and said ‘I’m going to go ahead and kill’.”

In December 2008, while staying at the Charlotte Correctional Institution in Florida, James hatched a plan to be sent to death row.

That month, he murdered his cellmate Frank Hart who had been in prison for committing lewd acts in the presence of a child.

James waited until Frank fell asleep and waited for the gap between the guards’ patrols.

Then, he nudged Frank awake and strangled him to death with a pair of socks.

After a five minute struggle, Frank was dead.

When asked about the crime on I am a Killer, James freely admitted: “I don’t feel bad about it”.

James wrote a book about his prison experience entitled The Smiley Faced Man

James’ battle to reach death row

A three-year legal battle ensued after James was charged with the murder in 2009.

The court battle made headlines, since it was a rare case of an inmate deliberately seeking to have the death penalty considered as a punishment.

His second lawyer finally succeeded in having his client sentenced to death in 2012, after James fired his first attorney for not supporting his death row bid.

When asked about how he would like to see his sentence carried out, James said: “I’d much rather have a needle stuck in me than be electrocuted but I could go either way.

“You read how it’s ‘inhumane’ but that’s a load of bulls**t.

You don’t feel anything.”

However, James’ death sentence was not carried out and he remains in prison, as of October 20, 2024.

He is reportedly writing a book entitled The Smiley Faced Man which is a third-person account of his life and is said to explain his traumatic childhood.

The book has been promoted by an Instagram account named @james.sfmbook, which claims to “share in the creation process and promote the book written by James Robertson from the Netflix series ‘I am a Killer’”.

Pringles introduces new chips without iconic can marking brand’s first non-traditional snack in 15 years

PRINGLES has released a new product without it’s traditional packaging for the first time in over a decade.

The company unveiled its all-new Pringles Mingles – a puffed snack available in three flavors.

Kellanova
Pringles Mingles will mark the first snack which won’t be stocked in the company’s signature tube[/caption]

It’s the first time in 15 years that Pringles has launched a product sold in bags, as opposed to its famous cans.

Pringles Mingles have now hit store shelves and are available in three mouthwatering flavors: Cheddar And Sour Cream, Sharp White Cheddar And Ranch and Dill Pickle and Ranch.

The new offering promises “a puffy, irresistibly delicious and shareable snacking experience unlike one you’ve ever had from Pringles” according to a press release released in May this year.

The decision divided opinion online, with many Pringles loyalists upset with the change.

“Why my Pringles mingling,” one user wrote.

“I don’t see the excitement for them at all,” another chimed in.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF PRINGLES

Since its launch in 1968, Pringles has become one of the most recognizable snacks in the world.

The signature can was initially designed to address customer complaints about broken pieces and empty air in bags of chips.

Pringles have a lower potato content than many other chips – just 42%.

The rest is made up of wheat starch, flour, vegetable oils, emulsifiers, salt, and seasoning.

SNACK-SPIRACY

However, some consumers think the new Mingles were inspired by the launch of Goldfish Crisps in December 2023.

Released in three flavors, the product put a “light airy” take on the classic fish-shaped snack.

Responding to a Facebook post about Pringles Mingles one wrote: ‘It’s giving the new Goldfish Crisps concept.”

Another said they “sound an awful lot like the recent Goldfish Crisps in texture.”

SOUR NOTE

Meanwhile, Kellogg’s has come under fire from a frustrated business owner over suspected size differences between two different packs of Rice Krispies Treats.

They claimed to have noticed the changes after buying the company’s famous snack.

“Kellogg’s, please explain,” begged Sweet Tooth Candy Buffets owner Ursula (@swttoothbuffets) in a recent clip on TikTok.

Ursula could be seen with two different Rice Krispies Treats boxes — one a larger 40-pack and the other an eight-pack.

The packs should include identical treats for both, the only difference being the count included.

Still, Ursula claimed that she found the Rice Krispies Treats in the 40-pack to be noticeably smaller than those in the eight-pack.

Missing mom-of-four Suzanne Clark Simpson’s brother-in-law slams her jailed husband Brad who remains ‘uncooperative’

THE brother of a man who is jailed for assaulting his wife before she disappeared has spoken out in the desperate search for his missing sister-in-law.

Barton Simpson, the brother of Brad Simpson, slammed his brother for being “uncooperative” as police entered the tenth day of efforts to recover Suzanne Clark Simpson.

Brad Simpson’s mugshot at the Bexar County Jail[/caption]

Brad remains in Bexar County Jail in San Antonio, Texas, after he was charged with assaulting Suzanne, his wife of 22 years, on October 6, just hours after she was last seen in public.

Cops haven’t directly connected Brad with Suzanne’s disappearance but told the public last week that he’s not cooperating with the investigation.

Barton shared a statement on Facebook that slammed his brother’s lack of help and showed support for police, who continue to search a landfill in San Antonio, Texas, in hopes of recovering the mom-of-four.

“Until Brad chooses to cooperate, we will continue to cooperate for him, as we have from the very beginning of this heartbreaking ordeal,” Barton wrote in the post.

Police documents obtained by The U.S. Sun showed that Barton spoke to cops early on and revealed that the day after Suzanne was last seen, Brad called his brother and “apologized for all the problems that he had caused.”

Suzanne was seen wearing a dark dress at a private club in San Antonio on October 6.

Later that night, her neighbor reported hearing her and Brad argue before he heard two or three screams.

Cops also learned that the couple’s 5-year-old daughter told officials at her elementary school that her “mom and dad were fighting.”

The child told school administrators, who relayed the information to investigators, that her dad had allegedly hit her mom in the face and possibly pushed her into a wall.

The girl said her mom had a bruise on her elbow and her father had taken her mom’s cell phone away, Brad’s arrest affidavit said.

Brad was arrested on October 8 and charged with family violence.

“This is not how he was raised, and this is not who we are. Our parents instilled in us the values of honoring and protecting others, and they are truly remarkable people,” Barton’s statement continued.

Barton shared that his sister and brother-in-law are taking care of Suzanne and Brad’s kids.

“Our lives have been irreparably changed,” he added.

Timeline of Suzanne Clark Simpson's disappearance

Suzanne Clark Simpson, a real estate agent and mom of four, has been missing since last Sunday evening.

Sunday, October 6

6 pm – 9 pm: Suzanne is seen at The Argyle in Alamo Heights.

Between 10 pm and 11 pm: Suzanne and her husband Brad have a physical altercation outside their home, their neighbor told police.

Monday, October 7

3 pm: Suzanne and Brad’s kid’s school calls Brad to tell him that their daughter hasn’t been picked up from school.

Evening: Brad reports his wife is missing.

Tuesday, October 8

Evening: Police search the Simpsons’ home in Olmos Park.

Wednesday, October 9

1:30 am – Brad Simpson is arrested by the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.

4:02 am – Brad Simpson is booked into Kendall County Sheriff’s Office on charges of assault causing bodily injury-family violence and unlawful restraint.

Thursday, October 10

Olmos Police Chief Fidel Villegas releases a new photo of Suzanne Simpson and what they believe she was last wearing on the night of October 6.

Brad Simpson is transferred to Bexar County Jail.

Tuesday, October 15

Law enforcement officials resume the search for Suzanne at a landfill in east Bexar County, where Villegas says cops “feel confident there is a good chance of recovering Suzanne at that location.”

Wednesday, October 16

Barton Simpson, Brad’s brother-in-law, slams Brad for being “uncooperative.”

“We will not rest until we find Suzanne.”

Olmos Park Police Chief Fidel Villegas said that the Simpson family has been helpful throughout the search for Suzanne, which led them to an east Bexar County landfill on October 15.

Villegas said investigators believe “there is a good chance of recovering Suzanne at that location.”

He added that cops were led to that location by “evidence, statements, and solid police investigation.”

Barton Simpson's full statement

Suzanne Clark Simpson's brother-in-law spoke out against his brother, Brad Simpson, as police search for Suzanne, who has been missing for 10 days on Wednesday.

“Until Brad chooses to cooperate, we will continue to cooperate for him, as we have from the very beginning of this heartbreaking ordeal,” Barton Simpson wrote on Facebook.

“This is not how he was raised, and this is not who we are. Our parents instilled in us the values of honoring and protecting others, and they are truly remarkable people.

“The devastation this has caused to our family is overwhelming. Brad’s refusal to cooperate is unacceptable.

“My sister and brother-in-law have stepped up to take care of the children, but the impact on our parents has been shattering. Our lives have been irreparably changed.

“We will not rest until we find Suzanne,” Barton concluded.

Cops have searched four areas since she vanished: Simpsons’ home, the Olmos Park Basin, an area along a nearby highway, and the landfill.

Brad’s bond hearing was postponed after initially being scheduled for this week.

He’s currently jailed with a $2 million bond. He also faces a separate federal charge for illegally possessing a gun.

Cops have now launched an investigation but it is believed to be an accident.

A spokesman for the rescue team said: “A three-year-old girl has died today in a swimming pool in the Torrox area of the province of Malaga.

“We received a call at noon … emergency responders were immediately activated and attempts were made to save the girl’s life.

“A helicopter was mobilised along with the Civil Guard, local town-hall employed police and health professionals.

“[Rescuers] later confirmed the little girl had died without offering any more details about the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.”

It is understood the girl lived at the family home in Costa de Sol with her parents and two other siblings.

Oscar Medina, mayor of Torrox, described the girl’s death as a “tragic incident”.

He added: “I offer my sincere and profound condolences to the family in the name of all local residents.”

The Sun has approached the Foreign Office for a comment.

It comes after a daredevil Brit influencer tragically died after plunging 160ft from a bridge in a social media stunt.

The 26-year-old is said to have tried to climb the bridge Puente de Castilla-La Mancha in Spain – one of the country’s tallest.

A spokesman for National Police said the Brit was climbing up the bridge near Talavera de la Reina, when the social media stunt went awry.

Footage from the scene of the tragedy showed police cordoning off the area near where he fell.

National Police as well as local town-hall-employed firefighters rushed to the scene with paramedics but there was nothing they could to save the Brit.

Travis Kelce reveals ‘mixed feelings’ cuddling up to Taylor Swift for Yankees-Guardians playoff game

TRAVIS KELCE reveals he had mixed feelings as he cuddled up to Taylor Swift at the Yankees vs Guardians playoff game.

The NFL star enjoyed a switch of sports as he took in Game 1 of the World Series playoffs.

He enjoyed his visit despite the Yankees winning 5-2[/caption]

But Kelce felt out of place as he was cheering on the visitors – his beloved Cleveland Guardians.

Kelce said he had mixed feelings as he watched the match and cosied up to his partner Taylor.

He said on the New Heights podcast: “I’m in hostile territory cause it’s the Bronx Bombers and I’m at Yankee Stadium and the playoffs, and I’m over here cheering for the Guards cause I’m a Cleveland kid and I want to see Cleveland win a f***ing World Series.

“It was mixed feelings because I was there trying to have some fun with Tay and everybody.

“All our friends… came, we had an unbelievable crew with us and hanging with us, it was fun, even though the Guards couldn’t pull it off, it was still an exciting game, it was cool to see Yankee Stadium because I always wanted to see that thing in person, in a playoff game, in a hostile environment and it didn’t disappoint.

“The Yankees, the fans, the players, everybody involved man, it was awesome.”

Kelce, 35, could have been forgiven for not enjoying his first Yankees experience as his side were beaten 5-2.

But he appears to have enjoyed the atmosphere and the intensity of a playoff and he praised two Yankees players – Giancarlo Stanton and Juan Soto.

“I think it’s just the intensity, you know, you play all those, what is it, 162 games, for these moments and every single pitch matters.

“Every single pitch matters. A few got away from our first reliever there, unfortunately, and sure enough we weren’t able to bounce back from Yankees’ power, man, it’s, I’ll tell you what, man, when Stanton and Soto, when they get a hold of one man, it’s oh s*** that ball flies off the bat. It is impressive s***.”

Kelce celebrated his birthday earlier this month and Taylor lavished him with a selection of gifts.

Taylor spent a whopping $360,000 on a typically eclectic selection of haute couture fashion items from Armani, Ferragamo, and two $30,000 Cartier timepieces.

And she got Kelce’s pulse racing by booking out the entire Monza F1 race circuit for a day.

It included private driving lessons as soon as the football campaign is over.

As we exclusively revealed earlier this year, the couple has fallen in love with Italy and has been looking at properties in the picturesque Lake Como.

Chiefs injury crisis

Patrick Mahomes lost another offensive weapon to injury in the Week 4 win in Los Angeles

The Chiefs saw wide receiver Rashee Rice taken off on the back of a medical cart at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Kansas City was already without free agency signing wide receiver Hollywood Brown (shoulder) and starting running back Isiah Pacheco (fractured fibula).

Both are set to miss large parts of the 2024 NFL season.

Speaking after Sunday’s win over the LA Chargers sent them to 4-0, Mahomes said, “All we can do now is go back to the basics and try to get guys opportunities to succeed.

“The guys stepped up and filled in as good as they can the role that Rice has in our offense, which is a big one.”

Once Kelce’s duties with the Chiefs are over, they will head straight to Monza and then take some well-earned vacation time in Italy.

The insider says the celebrity couple will also decide on which property to buy after doing the groundwork earlier this year.

Kelce and Taylor enjoyed a weekend away in New York City and were pictured on a dinner date on both Friday and Saturday night.

The loved-up duo spent the evening with Hollywood A-list pals Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively on Friday.
