Sainsbury’s issues urgent ‘do not eat’ warning after pulling popular crisps from shelves over serious label mistake

SAINSBURY’S has issued an urgent ‘do not eat’ warning after pulling popular crisps off the shelves over a serious label mistake.

The major supermarket has issued an urgent recall for its own-brand Onion Rings due to a dangerous labelling error, which could pose a significant risk to people with food allergies.

The 125g packs of onion rings, with a best before date of February 8, 2025, have been removed from shelves as they contain milk, soya, wheat or gluten, none of which are mentioned on the packaging.

This could be potentially life-threatening for customers with allergies to these ingredients or those with coeliac disease.

Shoppers who have already bought the product are being urged not to eat the crisps and instead return them to their nearest Sainsbury’s store for a full refund.

The supermarket has apologised for the mistake and has advised anyone with concerns to contact their helpline or visit their website for more information.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said: “We are recalling our Onion Rings as a precautionary measure due to the presence of allergens that are not listed on the label.

“We advise customers not to consume the product and return it for a refund. No other products are affected.”

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has also issued an alert, warning that the product could pose a serious health risk for those with allergies or intolerances to milk, soya, wheat, or gluten.

The FSA advises customers with any of these allergies to avoid the product and follow the refund process.

Allergy support organisations have been informed of the recall, and notices have been displayed in stores explaining the issue and what customers should do.

The presence of wheat or gluten can be extremely harmful to people suffering with coeliac disease.

Around one per cent of Brits have coeliac disease but only 36 per cent are diagnosed, according to Coeliac UK.

The charity estimates around half a million people in the UK are currently undiagnosed.

Coeliac disease causes the immune system to attack the body’s own tissues when you eat gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye.

This damages the gut, preventing the body from taking in nutrients properly.

Symptoms include diarrhoeatummy pain and bloating, as well as indigestionconstipationtiredness, weight loss, an itchy rash, infertility or nerve damage.

Patients who continue to eat gluten over time can suffer long-term gut damage, weakening of the bones and iron deficiency.

Many other conditions including non-coeliac gluten sensitivity also need a gluten-free diet, and it is now estimated that at least 10 per cent of UK consumers are following this diet.

The FSA issues alerts if there is a problem with food products which should not be sold.

This could be because it has been contaminated with something, such as mould or metal, or it carries an incorrect ‘use-by‘ date.

If you’ve purchased the Sainsbury’s onion rings and are affected by the labelling error, do not eat them – return them to your local Sainsbury’s store for a full refund.

What happens if someone with coeliac disease eats gluten by mistake?

The reaction to eating gluten varies from person to person.

In some people, it may trigger symptoms that last several days, while others might not experience any symptoms at all.

The amount of gluten someone eats can affect the degree of gut damage, and your individual sensitivity to gluten affects the symptoms you may or may not experience.

You may also find that your symptoms differ in type and/or severity compared to before you were diagnosed.

If a mistake is made and you have gluten by accident, it is unlikely to cause any long-term gut damage, although you may suffer from diarrhoea, abdominal pain or vomiting so it is important to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.

You may find taking medication to treat constipation, diarrhoea or headaches can ease your symptoms.

Speak to your GP or pharmacist for further advice.

Sam’s Club to open new ‘store of the future’ – but shoppers will not be able to escape checkout option

A NEW Sam’s Club warehouse that will give members a glimpse of how stores will look in the future is to open today.

The chain’s premises in Grapevine, Texas, is reopening two years after being ravaged by a tornado.

Chiefs have hailed the premises as a store of the future and the chain’s first digital-only store.

Chris Nicholas, the Sam’s Club CEO, said the location is part of efforts to pioneer the future of retail, per Forbes.

The store will be strikingly different from traditional Sam’s Club establishments.

This is because checkout lanes – both manned and self-service – have been stripped out.

Shoppers who visit the Grapevine outlet will have to use scan-and-go technology.

Scan-and-go is a tool that lets customers scan items and check out via the chain’s app.

Then, shoppers must show digital receipts to a worker.

Sam’s Club is trialing technology designed to make the checkout process more efficient.

They have unveiled scanners that verify purchases in shopping carts.

The technology was unveiled at the CES convention in Las Vegas earlier this year.

Bosses hope that rolling out the kit will eliminate the need for shoppers to stand in a line waiting for a receipt check.

Bosses acknowledged the feedback from customers who have said they wanted a more convenient store experience.

“This is Sam’s Club at its very best, listening to feedback from members, putting their needs at the center of everything we do – and then applying digital innovations to deliver an industry-leading member experience,” Chris Nicholas, the Sam’s Club CEO, said.

“We are constantly looking at ways for Sam’s Club to be the most convenient membership club and will continue to prioritize using technology to provide a truly differentiated and delightful experience for our members.”

The scanning arches have been rolled out at 300 stores so far, according to the Fox affiliate KTVU-TV.

But bosses hope the arches will be a feature in all 600 warehouses by the end of the year.

The U.S. Sun has reported how shoppers have rejoiced after news about the new technology emerged.

NEW FEATURES

Exit arches are not the only feature that will be on show in the new Grapevine location.

There will be displays for online items and customers will be able to buy sushi that’s made to order.

A robot in the store’s café will be able to make up to 100 pizzas in an hour.

Bosses have revealed that the Grapevine location will inspire future Sam’s Club warehouses.

“The idea is that over time, we will be 100% digital engagement as a business, and you’ve got to prove that things work before you scale them,” Nicholas told CNBC.

Chiefs hope to open 30 warehouses across the next five years.

The pictures appeared to show white powder and burnt aluminium foil.

The 31-year-old singer was in Buenos Aires for his ex-bandmate Niall Horan’s tour when he died after falling from the third floor on Wednesday afternoon.

Buenos Aires emergency services chief Alberto Crescenti said initial findings point towards him fracturing his skull.

Police are now set to look into who may have supplied Liam with drugs, reports Argentine outlet La Nacion.

Cops are planning to test the items in the room to confirm they were illegal substances.

Several images show the inside of the former One Direction singer’s luxury suite at the upmarket Hotel CasaSur Palermo, according to local media.

News outlets such as La Nacion and Clarin confirmed the photos were taken after Liam was found dead.

It comes as:

They appear to show traces of a white powder and burnt aluminium foil both in the bathroom and living area.

Argentina’s biggest newspaper Clarin published the images alongside the report: “Damage and drugs in the hotel room Liam Payne was staying in in Buenos Aires.”

The singer had been open about his battles with drugs in the past

In 2019, Liam revealed he suffered suicidal thoughts as he struggled with his fame.

A smashed TV can also be seen in the room next to a half-drunk champagne glass.

A final 911 call from hotel staff revealed they had asked for “urgent assistance” from cops to help with a guest “behaving erratically”.

Argentinian police said they were called to the hotel on Wednesday after staff reported an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol”.

Witnesses at the hotel reported Liam even had to be carried back to his room, according to TMZ.

The head of reception made two calls, telling a 911 operator in the first: “We have a guest who is destroying everything in his room. We need someone to come.”

He phoned back after the line went dead, repeating his request: “We need you to send someone urgently because I don’t know if the guest’s life is in danger.

“They must be in a room that has a balcony. And well, we’re a little bit worried he’ll do something, that he’ll put his life at risk.”

At around 5pm local time (9pm UK time) on Wednesday cops found Liam dead in the hotel’s inner courtyard.

The spokesperson for the local ambulance service said Liam’s death had been confirmed on the spot after he had fallen and suffered severe injuries.

Inside Liam Payne and Cheryl's romance

By Joanne Kavanagh

IT was a romance that caused a media storm.

One Direction hunk Liam Payne was in a relationship ship X Factor judge Cheryl.

The pair – who have a ten-year age gap – got together while Cheryl was going through her divorce to second husband Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini at the beginning of 2016.

Despite their age difference they looked completely infatuated with each other when the couple made their red carpet debut at Cannes in May 2016.

Liam even paid a sweet tribute to his girlfriend by getting a tattoo of her eye on his arm.

In 2017, Liam and Cheryl welcomed their baby.

Cheryl posted a picture on Instagram of Liam cradling their 7lb 9oz baby.

She captioned the sweet snap with: “On Wednesday Liam and I became parents to an incredibly beautiful, healthy baby boy looking like a dream.”

One pal told The Sun: “Cheryl gave birth to a baby boy on Wednesday, and both are doing well.

“Liam didn’t leave Cheryl’s side throughout the birth, and like her, he is besotted with their new son and can’t wait to take him home.

“This is the perfect Mother’s Day for Cheryl.”

The Sun revealed in May 2017, that the couple named their son Bear.

They decided on the unusual name after spending a week getting to know him.

Bear adopted his One Direction star dad’s surname, so he is called Bear Payne.

A source revealed: “Cheryl and Liam wanted to get to know [their son] before they decided on the name.

“They didn’t have the name Bear before the birth.

“But they’d been thinking of a name since meeting him and they just felt it suited him.”

In February 2018, The Sun broke the story that Liam’s constant travelling to promote his solo career had placed a huge strain on the relationship, and they were ready to split.

That same month, Cheryl declared that “none of it matters” as she shrugged off questions about her crumbling romance with Liam during a BBC Breakfast interview.

They then put on a united front together at the Brit Awards, where they smiled on the red carpet and Cheryl joked about the couple’s ‘safe word’.

However, by July 2018, Cheryl and Liam made the decision to split.

A pal told The Sun: “Cheryl and Liam worked really hard on their relationship – they had troubles earlier this year and were able to get through them.

“But they’re in different stages of their lives and, after a lot of careful thought, came to a decision that it’s best for everyone if they do go their separate ways.”

Liam and Cheryl then released a statement confirming their break-up.

They posted a message on social media that read: “We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It’s been a tough decision for us to make.

“We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together.”

Drivers could soon be forced to have speed warning systems in cars – but some vehicles would be exempt from new law

NEW cars sold in New York within the next five years could come with intelligent speed assistance tech.

A key member of the New York State Assembly has introduced the legislation in an attempt to reduce traffic accidents.

The system will be introduced in an attempt to reduce traffic accidents[/caption]

The new bill states the speed assistance system will alert drivers using an audio and visual signal when they drive more than 10mph over the speed limit.

However, according to the Observer Today, emergency vehicles will be exempt.

The system, which is already present in cars sold in Europe, has already been approved by California lawmakers – and will be installed in new cars there by 2030.

The original version of this legislation would have required active speed assistance, which would have physically stopped vehicles from speeding.

This was later amended to passive speed assistance, which merely warns drivers when they are speeding and doesn’t force them to slow down.

Robert Carroll, a New York State rep, said: “The relationship between speeding and increased traffic fatalities is well established.

“A report from the New York State Comptroller found that of the 1,175 motor vehicle fatalities in 2022, one-third involved speeding.

“Intelligent speed assistance technology has been recommended by the National Transportation Safety Board to be standard equipment in all new vehicles and to be effective in reducing speeding by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.”

California’s bill works by using GPS technology to compare a vehicle’s speed with speed limits in the area.

Once the car is at least 10 mph over the speed limit, the system would emit “a brief, one-time visual and audio signal to alert the driver.”

It’s not yet known if the tech will include all local roads, or if the system will update when local governments change speed limits.

From July this year, new cars sold in Europe will have the technology installed, though drivers will be able to turn it off.

The National Transportation Safety Board recommended the tech for all new cars after a crash in January 2022, when a man with a history of speeding violations was travelling more than 100mph, ran a red light and hit a minivan, killing himself and eight other people.

This comes as legislation introduced in New York last year would require speed limiters – similar to ignition interlock devices – for drivers who accumulate 11 or more points on their driver’s licence over a 12-month period.

Elsewhere, Google has unveiled a free, helpful tool that could save drivers from getting pulled over for speeding.

In a recent software update, the tech brand added incident reporting and a speedometer to Google Maps – two features that have long been available on competitor Waze.

Incident reporting allows drivers to tell other users whether they’re stuck behind an accident or caught in a police speed trap.

And a speedometer has been displayed beside the road’s speed limit so drivers can properly monitor whether they’re following the rules of the road.
