Historic luxury cars set to be sold after sitting in junkyard – there’s even a Mercedes that could sell for $1 million

A HOST of classic cars that have been sat in a junkyard for decades are set to be sold off for millions of dollars.

The incredible collection includes retro Porsches, a trio of dilapidated Lamborghinis, and even a Mercedes that could sell for $1 million.

Multiple Porsches are part of the auction, including vintage 356s and 911s

A handful of classic Lamborghinis are also up for sale

Famed auction house RM Sotheby’s is preparing to sell off the collection of incredible vehicles from the inventory at Rudi Klein’s Los Angeles junkyard.

Klein, who’s a renowned figure in the world of collecting, has amassed the remarkable collection in the modest junkyard since 1967, with a particular focus on rare or unique autos from Europe.

For gearheads, Klein’s collection has always been something of a mystery, with very few industry collectors knowing of its existence and even fewer having peeked behind the lot’s barbed wire fences.

Who is Rudi Klein?

Rudi Klein, a German immigrant who arrived in the US in the late 1950s, began as a butcher before he founded Porsche Foreign Auto, a scrapyard business located in LA, in 1967.

Over the decades, Klein has amassed an incredible collection of classic cars from Europe, including Ferraris, Porsches, Maseratis, and Lamborghinis, all of which were kept hidden away from prying eyes.

The junkyard was never open to the public, and is known for its high levels of security. Few people have ever seen the collection.

Even after Klein’s death in 2001, his sons continued to keep the collection hidden.

The site is packed with vintage cars, many of them classic Porsches, including 356s and 911s in various states of disrepair, as well as dozens of the German brand’s iconic air-cooled engines.

There’s also a duo of worse-for-wear Ferrari 330 GTCs, a 275 GTS, a handful of Lamborghini Miura P400s, and even a rare Iso Grifo Spyder.

But perhaps the most striking examples in the collection are several rare Mercedes-Benz machines, which includes a largely complete 1957 300 SL Roadster which could sell for as much as $1 million at auction.

This Merc is particularly desirable as it comes equipped with Rudge wheels – one of just 30 in existence.

Pricier still is a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Alloy Gullwing, one of just 29 examples to feature the lightweight body, Plexiglass windows, Rudge wheels, and the motorsports-trimmed engine.

This unrestored example, which hasn’t been driven outside of the walls of the Klein yard in nearly 50 years, could sell for an estimated $5 million.

The car was once purchased by Luigi Chinetti, an iconic Le Mans winner and owner of the Ferrari North American Racing Team.

However, experts predict a 1935 Mercedes 500 K, which was acquired by Klein in 1979, could outsell the Alloy Gullwing.

Having not been seen in public since 1980, the pre-war automobile was originally built as a one-off for driver racing driver Rudolf Caracciola, who became an icon during the Silver Arrows era of Grand Prix racing.

The Rudi Klein Collection will go under the hammer on October 26, with a preview available on October 25.

This comes as hundreds of classic cars were found underwater at a disused quarry last month.

The vehicles had been dumped and left to rot in an underwater car graveyard –  including a Ford Escort, Ford Fiesta and Morris Minor.

Elsewhere, a classic car nut has embarked on a “labor of love” restoration after discovering an abandoned 1966 muscle car worth $70,000.

The vehicle’s owner thought it was “junk” and wanted it removed without realizing they had a real gem on their hands.

The greatest comeback in F1 history is on – Max Verstappen is on the ropes but Lando Norris needs perfect last six races

IT is do or die for Lando Norris as Formula One heads into the final six races.

The biggest comeback in the sport’s history is on, and it will take something exceptional to pull it off – but it is not beyond the realms of possibility.

Verstappen has gone eight races without a win

The Sprint weekend at Austin’s sweeping Circuit of the Americas marks the first of the final races to the end of the season in Abu Dhabi on December 8.

SunSport has chewed the fat on the Verstappen-Norris title fight and what it will take for the McLaren driver to emerge victorious.

How things stand

Red Bull driver Verstappen holds a 52-point lead over Norris in the Drivers’ Championship.

The tables have massively turned, given Verstappen held a season-high lead of 84 points up until the British Grand Prix in July 7.

In-form Norris has outscored him in all but one of the six races that have taken place since.

The margin of 52 points is the exact equivalent of winning two races with the fastest lap bonus point (25+1) on a non-Sprint race weekend.

How many points are left to play for?

There is a maximum of 180 points up for grabs across the final six race weekends of the season.

That is 156 points in the remaining six grands prix, 25 for a win plus one for the fastest lap.

In addition, there are three sprint races remaining where one driver could bag a maximum of 24 points.

The winners of the sprint races in USA, Brazil and Qatar will be awarded eight points for victory.

How does Norris need to outscore Verstappen?

Norris must outscore Verstappen by an average of almost nine points (8.67 points to be precise) at each grand prix weekend until the end of the season.

That is the points difference between first and third places (10 points) in a grand prix.

Norris cannot be crowned champion if he wins every race and Verstappen comes in second.

That could have still been on the cards had Norris clung onto the bonus point at the most recent grand prix in Singapore for fastest lap.

But Daniel Ricciardo controversially snatched it away on fresh tyres with one lap to go.

When could the title be won?

The absolute earliest the title could theoretically be won by Verstappen is the Sao Paulo GP weekend on November 1-3.

But the Red Bull driver would have to outscore Norris by at least a whopping 34 points over the next triple-header.

Who’s got the quicker car?

The MCL8 is the fastest car on the grid and introduced a flexible wing with a “mini DRS” effect

There’s no doubt about it being McLaren, who have won four of the last six races, two for Norris and two for Oscar Piastri.

This season’s McLaren MCL38 has been the most consistent performer on different types of circuit.

Whereas Max Verstappen recently in Singapore said that Red Bull’s RB20 was “f***ed”.

The team are pinning their hopes on a significant upgrade planned on the RB20 for Austin this weekend.

F1 reporter Isabelle Barker's prediction

I EXPECT Max Verstappen to go all guns blazing over the next six-rounds. I also think his experience and aggression could give him the edge.

It seems too little too late for Norris showing consistency, despite that dominant win in Singapore last time out.

You can’t help think what could have been had he sorted out his first-lap issues sooner.

Norris needs to prove he has the mental fortitude, because we all know he’s got the speed, the team and the fastest car.

Verstappen has endured an eight-race winless streak, but he has still managed to score points, with three second-places during that time.

So I think the Dutchman will lift his fourth world-title this season, by the skin of his teeth.

Janette – who presents It Takes Two – welcomed her first child with husband and fellow show pro Aljaž Škorjanec last year.

In her honest post, the host opened up about juggling being mum to little girl Lyra with her busy life.

She wrote: “It’s tough to balance parenthood and work, but we all do our absolute best.

“It’s getting harder and harder to leave Lyra at nursery as she’s getting older and more aware, and our bond is growing stronger. But I know it’s the best for both of us right now.

“I can get to work knowing she is safe, and she develops social skills and stronger immunity to viruses all while having fun and learning.”

Emotional Janette continued “She always cries when I leave her, but she is fine after a few minutes.

“It hurts so hard to see her upset and holding on so tight to mami.

“But I remind myself that she is learning from example, a loving mami who protects and cares for her, and also works hard to provide for her family, and make her dreams come true.”

Aljaž returned to Strictly this year after leaving the show in 2022.

It came after Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima both left the programme following serious allegations.

But The Sun revealed last month that not everybody was happy with his return after he allegedly left following an altercation with a female pro.

A source said: “Has the BBC learned nothing from the past ten months?

“Amid ongoing furore around the behaviour of its male pros, they actively recruited a dancer who left under a cloud. Aljaž was touted as an unproblematic, returning legend but that couldn’t be further from the truth.”
