Can’t resist potatoes, pasta or bread? Scientists finally discover why we love carbs so much

OUR love of chips, bread and cakes holds millions of us back from a slim waist and perfect health – and it dates back thousands of years, according to a study.

Scientists have found that cavemen and even Neanderthals had the same genes that make modern man crave carbs.

The prehistoric gene, known as AMY1, speeds up sugar digestion with an enzyme called amylase in our saliva.

It explains why humans can’t resist starchy foods like potatoes, bread, pasta and rice – plus baked goods like doughnuts and biscuits.

They are high in energy-packed carbohydrates that would have helped us survive when food had to be homemade.

Brits are obsessed with starch-heavy foods, with fish and chips ranked as our favourite meal.

Chips, beans on toast, mashed potatoes and bangers and mash all also make the top 10, YouGov polling shows.

People with more copies of the gene were likely digesting starch more efficiently and having more children

Dr Omer GokcumenUniversity of Buffalo

Study author Dr Omer Gokcumen, from the University of Buffalo in New York, said: “The idea is that the more amylase genes you have, the more starch you can digest.

“This allowed humans to adapt to shifting diets as starch consumption rose dramatically with new technologies and lifestyles.”

His research studied DNA from 68 ancient human remains dating back thousands of years, to work out when the AMY1 gene became common.

It started an estimated 800,000 years ago in pre-human Neanderthals, he wrote in the journal Science.

The gene became more widespread in hunter-gatherers who lasted until about 11,000 years ago and would have eaten wild potatoes.

Then modern humans started farming crops like wheat and corn and they developed even more copies of the genes as they ate more flour and vegetables.

Dr Gokcumen said: “People with higher AMY1 copy numbers were likely digesting starch more efficiently and having more children.

“Their lineages ultimately fared better over a long evolutionary time frame.”

The number of gene copies was highest in the most recent people.

Westerners now get about half of our energy from carbohydrates – but most eat even more than this and gain weight from the excess sugar.

What a balanced plate looks like

How can you make sure you are eating a balanced, filling and nutritious plate at every meal?

Think of your plate divided into different food groups – protein, carbs, fat and fruit and veg.

Protein: David Wiener, training and nutrition specialist at AI-based lifestyle and coaching app Freeletics, told The Sun: “Aim for one to two palm-size portions of lean protein in each meal.”

Protein includes meat (chicken, turkey, pork, beef), beans, peas, lentils and fish.

The NHS Eatwell Guide says to choose lean cuts of meat and mince, and eat less red and processed meat like bacon, ham and sausages.

Aim for at least two portions (two x 140g) of fish every week, one of which should be oily, such as salmon, sardines or mackerel.

Carbs: Carbohydrates should make up about a third of your plate, or a fist-sized portion.

The Eatwell Guide says: “Choose higher fibre or wholegrain varieties, such as wholewheat pasta and brown rice, or simply leave the skins on potatoes.

“There are also higher fibre versions of white bread and pasta.

“Starchy foods are a good source of energy and the main source of a range of nutrients in our diet.”

Fat: Generally the advice is to think of fat like a thumb-sized amount on your plate.

The Eatwell Guide says: “Remember all types of fat are high in energy and should be eaten in small amounts.

“These foods include chocolate, cakes, biscuits, sugary soft drinks, butter, ghee and ice cream.

“They’re not needed in our diet, so should be eaten less often and in smaller amounts.”

But a small amount is still essential for the diet. Try and eat more unsaturated fats (avocado, nuts, olive oil), which are healthier than saturated fats (butter, hard cheese, sour cream).

Fruit and veg: David says: “Make sure you also get lots of colourful fruit and vegetable carbohydrates too.

“Aim for at least five of these portions a day.

“One to two fist-sized portions of fruits and vegetables with every meal is generally recommended.”

Fruit and veg can be fresh, frozen, tinned or dried. You can roast, boil, steam or grill veggies.

I’ve made over $150k selling old items I find at bargain sales – ‘ghost hunters’ paid me $1,000s for a single knickknack

AN EBAY entrepreneur has revealed how she built up a $150,000-a-year business from scratch selling second-hand items online, and how one particular object netted her a small fortune.

Cassie LaBelle, a full-time eBay reseller, told The U.S. Sun how one seemingly unremarkable item ended up selling for thousands after it caught the attention of ghost hunters.

Cassie made $150,000 in 2023 selling on eBay[/caption]

Speaking from her home in Aurora, Colorado, Cassie explained how she started selling on eBay around 20 years ago, before becoming a full-time reseller in 2017.

“I love finding things,” she said. “I go to estate sales, I go to thrift stores, I go to auctions.

“I love finding things that have value to somebody and meeting them with their people.”

Cassie sells around 3,000 items a year, with her gross profits in 2023 hitting $150,000.

“This has been a constant in my life since I was a kid, and when I realized I could go full-time with it because I was really starting to get into it, I just devoted myself to it and it became a real passion of mine,” she said.

“I’ve always had other little freelance things going on, little side hustles. But this became my main profession in 2017.”

Cassie says that one of all the items that she has ever sold stands out.

“One of my favorite things I found was a little digital voice recorder,” she said.

“It looked like nothing, but apparently ghost hunters use it to pick up ghost signals, so it was worth several thousand dollars, and it was just this little voice recording that I found.”

Another favorite of Cassie’s was a little Civil War soldier model.

“You never know what you’re going to find,” Cassie enthused. “I found a Ronald McDonald statue from Japan from the 1970s, a big life-sized one.

“That’s why I love my job. You can find anything.”

She also described how her job allows her to “help people” achieve their dreams.

At a recent yard sale, Cassie said, “There was a little kid selling little handmade pottery with his mom, and no one had bought any all day.

“And I went over and talk to him, and I bought a few things.”

Cassie said the boy’s mom personally thanked him for making her son’s day.

“His mom’s like, ‘He’s autistic. This is his passion. He’s so happy that you stopped by and engaged with him.’

“I think there’s a lot of joy I can find connecting with people out in the world with what I do,” Cassie added.

That’s why I love my job. You can find anything.

More recently, Cassie had issues with eBay after the reselling platform shut down her account for selling an “illegal” item.

In July, she went to an estate sale and picked up some antiques, including several old apothecary items from the 19th century, and a pill press from the 1890s.

With illegal drugs not on her mind, Cassie listed the item on her eBay account and eventually sold it for just over $250 plus postage and packaging.

A few days later, she received a form letter from eBay telling her that selling such items was banned.

Just weeks later, she found out her account was being suspended for a week for “multiple violations of eBay’s drug pill and press policy,” she explained.

After calling eBay and eventually getting through to customer support, Cassie was told that she was supposed to have been punished more harshly the first time around, so she was being penalized again.

Then late last month, Cassie’s account was completely shut down with no explanation.

SELLING ON EBAY

SET up in 1995, some 138 million active buyers now use eBay across more than 190 countries worldwide. Some people - though by no means all - have made small fortunes selling their second-hand items online.

  • Decide on a business model – whether that is reselling, dropshipping, wholesale, or private label.
  • Decide on the types of products – and aim for a particular price point to maximize your return on eBay sales.
  • Create an eBay account – and click on “seller dashboard” to see all of your selling choices, and add your personal information on the “My Account” section.
  • Signup for a store subscription – it costs $4.95 a month if you can sell up to 250 products each month. After that, for $21.95, you can add 1,000 listings and pay lesser final value costs. Users with more sales can subscribe to eBay for $59.95 per month.

“I understand that they want to prevent illegal equipment from getting into the wrong hands, and I am all for that,” Cassie said.

“But this is clearly a mistake. I sold something that could not do any harm and lost my livelihood over it.”

Eventually, eBay restored Cassie’s account.

A spokesperson told The U.S. Sun, “eBay is proud of its well-recognized, proactive, and voluntary efforts to remove products that could be used for counterfeit pills – including dies, molds, and pill presses – and has zero tolerance for illegal activity on its platform.

“In this case, involving the sale of an antique press, we have been in touch with the seller and have reinstated their account.”

Vanderpump Rules’ Katie Maloney is dating rocker Nick Martin – but pals worry he’s ‘just like her ex Tom Schwartz’

VANDERPUMP Rules star Katie Maloney is officially off-the-market as The U.S. Sun can confirm she is dating Sleeping with Sirens guitarist Nick Martin.

The rockin’ romance marks Katie’s first public relationship since her divorce from ex Tom Schwartz.

Though she was secretive about the details of her boyfriend, Katie, 37, announced on this week’s episode of her podcast, Disrespectfully, that she had a new man in her life.

She appeared giddy as she opened up about her happy news to friend and podcast co-host, Dayna Kathan, on the same day as ex Schwartz’s 42nd birthday.

While Katie didn’t name any names, a source close to the Vanderpump Rules star confirmed that the lucky man is Sleeping with Sirens rocker, Nick, 41.

“He’s a cool guy and they are like best buds when they hang out, very comfortable with each other.

“They bond really deeply over music and have similar tastes, it’s been exciting for her. It’s still new, started over the Summer casually but they’re happy and appear to be all-in for now.”

Despite the strong connection, the insider claimed that friends have also raised some concerns due to Nick’s rockstar lifestyle on the road, as well as more unflattering allegations from his past.

“Her friends have questions and concerns. He’s a touring musician so that will raise problems eventually.

“Some questionable decisions he’s made in the past have also made her friends compare him to Tom Schwartz.

“They love Katie and they just want to make sure Katie isn’t dating a Schwartz 2.0. Everyone knows she deserves so much better than that.”

The source added that Katie is “a smart woman, she’ll figure it out.”

Tom famously cheated on Katie throughout their entire 12-year relationship – both before and after getting married.

He was also constantly shown berating her and at one point on Vanderpump Rules, poured an alcoholic drink on top of her head.

Nick has been a guitarist and backing vocalist for Florida-based rock band Sleeping with Sirens since 2013.

The emo-punk band, who credits Green Day, blink-182 and Linking Park as some of their influences, are currently on tour.

After playing at When We Were Young festival in Vegas this weekend, the group plays several shows overseas throughout November and December.

Katie gushed about her romance with Nick on yesterday’s episode of her podcast.

“Yeah, I’m in love, everybody. Katie’s in love! Yeah, I’m really happy,” the reality star said while flashing a huge smile.

She gushed: “Earlier in this past week, I went to go see my boyfriend.

“He has to travel for work, so I went to go meet up with him and hang out with him and spend some time.

“And it was really amazing because I hadn’t seen him in a few weeks and just being able to spend some quality time and just be around him was just really necessary and really nice.”

She went on to describe him as the “most wonderful person” she’s “ever met.”

“He just makes me feel really special and he’s really special, and yeah, I’m just really, really happy.

“I love love,” she exclaimed while blushing.

Dayna offered her support, and said that her pal was “glowing” and she “loved” seeing her so happy.

Ex Tom, 42, has been in a relationship with social media influencer Sophia Skoro, 24, since earlier this year.

Chiefs star Travis Kelce tried to start fight in Nashville bar after criticism of his running style, claims podcaster

A PODCASTER has claimed that Travis Kelce attempted to fight him in a Nashville bar.

Barstool Sports personality Billy Football spoke about the incident with Travis Kelce on an episode of AUDIOCRAIC this week.

Getty
The podcaster claimed that Kelce didn’t like criticisms that he made of him[/caption]

The podcaster criticized Kelce back in 2023, and later shared those criticisms with him face-to-face.

Billy Football is now claiming that Kelce confronted him in a Nashville bar after the criticism.

“He was in the bar and he was like ‘yo, dude, I can’t believe you think I’m a f***ing p***y, f*** you’,” he said.

“I’m just standing right next to him, it’s one of those keyboard warrior moments like ‘yep.

“If he had tried to clock me, I already had this thought – I wouldn’t have tried to sue.”

Billy Football criticized Kelce in June of 2023 about his physicality while running routes.

“I have been a bit of a critic, I’ll put that out there,” Billy said.

“Huge fan of your route running, still truth, I just think you could be a little more… you could end a couple of those and run someone over.

“Be a little more physical. Crafty, I think you could run someone over.

“I think it’s because you can, but you don’t.”

Kelce responded well to the criticism at the time, offering a civil response to it.

“I hear you. I mean, what you’re saying isn’t wrong – there are times I turn on the film and I think ‘that was soft.’ I am my own worse critic,” he said.

“But there are times when I stick my f***ing face in the fan. You can’t say it is every time.”

After claiming that Kelce tried to fight him, Billy Football reaffirmed his criticisms of Kelce on the podcast this week.

“He’s not trying to run guys over,” he said.

'Well-talked-about personal life'

Travis Kelce was asked about his relationship with Taylor Swift during an interview with Good Morning America.

But the Kansas City Chiefs tight end gave a cagey response.

“When you have good family and friends around you, it makes that aspect of life that much easier,” Kelce told GMA.

“I’ve always been a very grounded guy. It might not come off that way when I’m playing football.

“But off the field, I just want to be a genuine person. I try not to get too far down the road.

“Because you never know what opportunities are going to present themselves.”

“He kind of avoids contact which is why his career has spanned so well.

“You know, rock brain. You’re playing like a p***y or you’re making way more money and you’re like a global superstar.

“There’s positives and negatives, and now you have Taylor Swift. Shoutout Travis Kelce.”

There is no confirmation if Kelce ever actually tried to fight Billy Football, as no one else has shared the story before.

Kelce likely won’t respond to the claim as he focuses on his 5-0 Kansas City Chiefs.

I tried Kroger for the very first time and gave it an A – and it’s all because three products passed my ‘air test’

A SAVVY shopper decided to try Kroger for the first time and loved what he found in the aisles.

Unlike Walmart and Target, the popular retailer only stocks groceries, and one customer perused his local store searching for tasty offerings.

TikToker Billy noticed several dupes which offered shoppers more bang for their buck, and posted his experience.

Using his “air test” – a method where the influencer checked how much of the item was filled, Billy noticed that Kroger’s own Frosted Flakes packed more into its box than Kellogg’s for the same price.

The shopper noticed the same pattern with the respective brand’s Raisin Bran, as well as Kroger’s mega bag of potato chips when stacked up against Lay’s.

“My review of Kroger’s, I gotta say it’s an A,” Billy concluded.

“There’s nothing really special about it apart from the fact that they don’t give a f***.

“And they sell you less air.

“Two dollars cheaper.”

KROGER COST CUTS?

It comes after Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen has defended the proposed $24.6 billion merger with rival Albertsons in federal court on Wednesday.

He argued that the deal will enable the combined grocery giants to lower prices and better compete with retail behemoths like WalmartCostco, and Amazon.

The merger, which would be the largest grocery chain consolidation in US history, is currently under scrutiny as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) seeks to block it with a preliminary injunction.

McMullen assured the court that “the day that we merge is the day that we will begin lowering prices,” as he testified in favor of the deal, according to the Associated Press.

He addressed concerns about potential store closures, stating that Kroger would not immediately shut down any branches if the merger proceeds, but might consider future adjustments for optimal location management.

The FTC’s challenge, filed earlier this year, alleges that the merger would reduce competition and lead to higher food prices for consumers.

Kroger, headquartered in Cincinnati, operates 2,800 stores across 35 states, while Albertsons, based in Boise, runs 2,273 stores in 34 states.

The merger would combine their workforce of approximately 710,000 employees, per the outlet.

MORE FROM THE MERGER

During the hearing, McMullen countered FTC claims by stating that Albertsons’ prices are typically 10-12% higher than Kroger’s, and the merged entity would work to close this gap, the outlet reported.

McMullen emphasized that the new company would enhance its pricing strategy to retain customers and maintain competitiveness against Walmart, which controls around 22% of US grocery sales.

The FTC’s arguments were supported by data showing that Kroger and Albertsons closely match each other on price, quality, and services like store pickup in the 22 states where they currently compete.

The commission contends that the merger would harm shoppers by eliminating competition that keeps prices in check.

Influencer Billy was shocked to find that the chain’s frosted flakes had the same name as it’s Kellogg’s counterpart

LeBron James and wife Savannah react to major Bronny James news after LA Lakers make starting spot decision

LEBRON James and his wife Savannah threw their support to Bronny James after a big announcement from their son.

The 39-year-old LeBron James and his son and Lakers teammate Bronny James can be the first father-son duo in NBA history.

The 2024 second-round pick Bronny played with LeBron during a Lakers preseason game.

The USC product hasn’t played well in the Summer League and the preseason.

Still, it’s been reported that the Lakers are expected to display Bronny’s talents with LeBron in the team’s season opener.

Recently, the 20-year-old opened up about his journey to being a potential player in the NBA in an article he wrote for MensHealth.

Bronny’s mom, Savannah, gave her son plenty of feedback on Instagram.

“Amazing article [Bronny]!! The journey is yours! Your rules, your time, your way! I got your back and front always!!” she posted on Instagram.

“Go to @menshealthmag to read the full article!

Her high school sweetheart husband Lebron then liked the post.

ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania appeared on Get Up! last week and said that the Lakers are expected to debut Bronny in the first game of the season when they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves.

“We’re going to be seeing history very, very soon,” Charania reported.

“The expectation on the Lakers is that their debut together, the first father-son duo in the NBA history to play at the same time in a game, will be as soon as opening night.”

It would be smart for the Lakers to play Bronny on the opening night to get the distraction of him and LeBron playing together out of the way.

Then, the NBA squad can send down the guard to the G-League.

There are plenty of worries that Bronny isn’t ready for the professional league.

He averaged just under 5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 rebounds per game during his freshman year with the Trojans.

Bronny is also a year removed from suffering a brutal cardiac arrest during an off-season workout with the NCAA team.

“Not real,” James said about playing with his son during the preseason game.

“We’ll kind of get used to it, but it’s pretty cool.

“It’s pretty cool for the both of us, and especially for our family. It’s definitely a moment that I will never forget.”
