Gladiator II hailed ‘best movie of the year’ and a ‘true epic’ in first reviews for Paul Mescal

OUT of the ashes of Russell Crowe’s legendary performance in Gladiator as Maximus, Decimus Meridius, rises Ridley Scott’s sequel and critics have called it a masterpiece.

The first reviews for Gladiator II, starring Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington, 69, and Normal People star Paul Mescal, 28, are in and film critics have predicted the sequel to be the ‘movie of the year’ and a “true epic.”

The historical action film centres on Lucius (Mescal) who after witnessing the death of Maximus at the hands of his uncle, decides to enter the coliseum, after the powerful emperors of Rome conquer his home.

With the future of the empire at stake, Lucius trains under the tutelage of former slave Macrinus (Washington) in a bid to overthrow the young emperors.

Now film critics have flooded social media with their glowing reviews, including high praise for the Mescal’s performance and Denzel Washington whose been described as “scene-stealing.”

TV journalist Scott Menzel wrote: ‘Gladiator II is Ridley Scott’s best film since The Martian. A big, bloody and bad ass action spectacle that builds upon the legacy of the original.

‘The film showcases beautiful set pieces and a lot of epic battles. Paul Mescal shines. Denzel Washington chews up the scenery quite a bit here and looks like he is having the time of his life here.

Meanwhile producer, director and journalist Simon Thompson said: ‘#GladiatorII serves up the richest feast in the epic action set pieces and deliciously ribald treachery.

‘Dovetailing stylishly with the original, Paul Mescal leads a solid, stellar cast with aplomb. Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger are a collective powerhouse.’

AwardsWatch founder Erik Anderson added: ‘GLADIATOR II is a true epic and Ridley Scott’s best in years.

Paul Mescal is a great action star without sacrificing his indie grit , a worthy heir to the throne. Denzel Washington EATS every line and costume without ever overplaying.’

‘Ridley Scott returns to the Colosseum to prove to the world that HE’S. STILL. GOT. IT,’ FilmSpeak host Griffin Schiller added.

Indeed after the overwhelmingly positive reaction, film buffs are calling for Sir Ridley Scott to finally win his first Oscar at the age of 86.

The acclaimed British director whose resume includes classics including, The Martian, Thelma and Louise and Blade Runner, lost out for the first film in 2001, to Steven Soderbergh for Traffic who bagged the gong for his film, Traffic.

Over two decades after the events of Gladiator 2000, the latest trailer sees Mescal’s Lucius seek vengeance against Rome, in a bloody battle against his captor, general Marcus Acacius.

A former heir to the Roman empire, Lucius lives with his wife and child in a coastal town in Numidia. He hasn’t been in touch with his mother Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) in 15 years.

But he is imprisoned by Marcus , a feared general who honed his fighting skills under the tutelage of Maximus, and his marauding army of troops.

Played by young actor, Spencer Treat Clark in Scott’s original film, Lucius is now an adult and intent on breaking free of the fighting pits, at all costs.

Along the way, he encounters and befriends Denzel Washington’s Macrinus, a power broker who keeps a stable of gladiators and sees battle-thirsty Lucius as a worthwhile investment.

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II hits cinemas nationwide on 15th November.

Donald Trump seen working at McDonald’s as he dons an apron and makes French fries at fast food joint

DONALD Trump has donned an apron to make French fries – as he tried out working at McDonald’s.

The Republican presidential candidate worked a shift under the golden arches in the swing state of Pennsylvania today.

He said: “I’m looking for a job. And I’ve always wanted to work at McDonald’s but I never did.

“I’m running against somebody that said she did, but it turned out to be a totally phony story.”

“So, if you don’t mind, I want to work the French fry counter. How much are you paying me?”

Chatting with one worker, Trump said: “It’s a good job, isn’t it? Not bad. You have a nice owner?

“Be careful, he’s right there. Be careful. Eight years, that’s the end of that.”

Prepping a portion of fries, Trump said: “I love salt – wait a minute, I spilled some.”

Trump then suddenly threw some salt over his shoulder, saying: “I’m very superstitious.”

Serving his first drive-thru customers, Trump said: “This is not a normal situation, is it?”

He added: “Can you believe this? Look at this guy, he’s a MAGA guy all the way.

“What a good-looking family – how did you produce those good-looking kids?”

He told the family: “The food is all on Trump. It’s going to be the best – I made it myself. This is fun, I could do this all day – I like this job.”

Asked if he would order anything himself, Trump said: “I’m going to definitely have French fries for the plane.”

Trump tried out life as a McDonald’s worker while campaigning in the Philadelphia suburb of Feasterville-Trevose.

Posting on Twitter, Piers Morgan said: “This is one of the best political stunts of all time.”

Terry Bradshaw ‘very confused’ by bizarre Tom Brady Fox NFL Sunday appearance as Jimmy Johnson ‘has no idea what to do’

TOM Brady’s appearance on Fox NFL Sunday left fans confused – and maybe his co-stars too.

The 47-year-old former quarterback was part of Fox’s pregame show ahead of Week 7 action.

But Brady’s cameo came with a difference from his usual appearances on the show.

He is normally in a broadcast booth and talking back to the Fox NFL Sunday studio guests.

But on Sunday, host Curt Menefee beamed in Brady to the set via hologram.

A suited-up Brady stood in the Fox studio in between Jimmy Johnson and Michael Strahan.

And fans noticed how uncomfortable Terry Bradshaw looked stood next to Howie Long, Strahan and Brady.

“Jimmy Johnson and Terry Bradshaw seem very confused by hologram Tom Brady,” one fan said.

Another posted, “Jimmy Johnson has no idea what to do with this Tom Brady virtual appearance.”

Brady’s segment lasted five minutes before he was beamed back out of the studio.

Strahan then invited Johnson to move closer after Brady’s hologram took up his spot.

And New York Giants icon Strahan said, “The technology is very good expect for the fact Tom Brady is not bigger than me, I’ll tell you that now.”

Brady’s hologram appearance came ahead of him calling a Super Bowl rematch Sunday.

The 47-year-old joined Kevin Burkhardt and Erin Andrews at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

The top Fox team was on the broadcast for the Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers.

Brady sat down with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes for an interview to preview the showdown.

And the studio crew asked Brady for his thoughts on Mahomes’ evolution as a quarterback.

The Tom Brady domino effect

Tom Brady will take his seat in Fox's top NFL announce team alongside Kevin Burkhardt.

And his arrival at the network has set off a domino effect with every other announcer moving down one spot.

That means Fox’s NFL coverage in 2024 will feature entirely new broadcast pairings.

Greg Olsen, who previously worked alongside Burkhardt, will now be part of the No. 2 announce team with Joe Davis.

The other Fox pairings for 2024 are:

  • Adam Amin-Mark Sanchez
  • Kenny Albert-Jon Vilma
  • Kevin Kugler-Daryl Johnston
  • Chris Myers-Mark Schlereth

“Mahomes knows he has a great defence,” Brady said.

“He’s going to take what the defence gives him and he’s going to try and make all the right plays early in the game.

“The when he needs it, he’ll make the plays. But he’s doing such a good job managing the game and that’s his evolution.

“He was putting up monster touchdown numbers but the team has changed and lost some of it’s weapons.

“Because of that, he’s turned into a guy that is there to perform when it matters the most.

“To him it doesn’t matter if he gets four touchdowns – he ultimately wants to get the win.”

Brady won seven Super Bowls in his career while Mahomes has three to his name already.

“That’s how I evolved as a player,” Brady said.

“It became less about being in the MVP race and a Pro Bowler to ‘Am I good enough for my team to win today?’

“That’s rarified air because it gives you a chance to improve every single week and game.”

Liam Payne’s ex Danielle Peazer reveals he messaged her weeks before his death as she pays touching tribute

LIAM Payne’s former girlfriend Danielle Peazer has revealed that she was in touch with the star in the weeks leading up to his death.

The One Direction star was found dead after falling from a balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina aged just 31.

Now, Danielle, who dated the star between 2010 and 2013, has broken her silence following his passing with a touching tribute.

Taking to Instagram to share a snap of them from when they were dating, Danielle heartbreakingly admitted she and Liam had remained on friendly terms since their split and had been in touch as recently as just a number of weeks ago.

Writing online, Danielle said: “Whilst we all take the time to navigate in a world without Liam, it’s important to remember that while he was adored by millions as a world famous musician for the last decade, he was also someone’s son and brother for more than 30 years, a friend to so many and more recently an uncle.

“His most important role and something he was the most proud of out of all of his monumental successes was that he was a father.

“The thought that there is a now a child growing up without one of their parents is heartbreaking and unfair.

“To Liam’s son Bear, as well as his parents and sisters, my love, thoughts and strength goes to you. The magnitude of this loss is incomprehensible and I will continue to support you in any way I am able to.”

Danielle continued: “Thank you for teaching me about the importance of setting boundaries, and that I should always protect my heart.

“Receiving a message from you a couple of weeks ago expressing your happiness for the love I found with Sonny and Mia is something I’ll cherish forever.

“I’m sorry your story didn’t end differently, and I’m sorry you didn’t ever get to share more of your magic with the world.

“Rest easy my friend. Love Danielle x.”

Since their relationship ended, Danielle has been involved with Capital FM star Sonny Jay with the pair sharing a daughter together, Mia.

Danielle’s words come as Argentine investigators suspect the drugs found in the tragic One Direction star’s Buenos Aires hotel room were sourced in a poverty-stricken neighbourhood 15 miles away.

An address in the city of Lomas de Zamora is said to match up with a man suspected of being involved in supplying the substance, sources say.

Police are investigating two hotel staff in connection with the deals including a cleaner at the CasaSur boutique hotel.

It comes as…

It is believed they hid the drugs in a Dove Soap box which can be seen in pictures inside Liam’s room.

A pal of Liam’s last night told The Sun the star had been given the all-clear on a drugs test last Tuesday – the day before he plunged 45ft to his death from his third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel.

Danielle's statement in full

“Whilst we all take the time to navigate in a world without Liam, it’s important to remember that while he was adored by millions as a world famous musician for the last decade, he was also someone’s son and brother for more than 30 years, a friend to so many and more recently an uncle.

The magnitude of this loss is incomprehensible and I will continue to support you in any way I am able to.

“LJP, This still doesn’t feel real. Despite being aware of your struggles over the years, I hoped and prayed that this day would never come.

“But now we’re all facing the reality of living a life without your presence.
It’s common at times like this for people to say ‘I hope he knew how much I cared about him’ but I know that you knew how I felt, it was one thing we were really good at being brutally honest with our feelings for each other, whether the other wanted to hear it or not.

“At times you were my favourite person in the whole world, but you could also wind me up so much and I probably annoyed the hell out of you sometimes too.

“It was something we learned to accept of each other over 14 years, we could disagree on so many things yet still look out for each other in times of need and laugh about our disagreements and petty behaviour 10 mins later.

“Our relationship may have ended back in 2013, but that seemed to be just the start of our story.

“The things we went through and
experienced from then all the way until last year could be described as unique to some and misunderstood by others, but I think deep down we always knew we’d have some sort of connection forever, no matter where our individual lives took us.

“It took a little longer for you to figure out the person you wanted to be in order to be your happiest, but whilst most of us have our teens and twenties to learn about ourselves, you spent those years giving more to the world than you ever needed to.

“I wish you knew that you were always more than enough for this world without having to search for a role to play just to please others.

“Thank you for teaching me about the importance of setting boundaries, and that I should always protect my heart.
