Harry Potter TV Series: Latest News, Cast, Release Date, Trailer, JK Rowling Connection and More

Apparate! A return to the Wizarding World (and to our childhood) is set for 2026. Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO are currently putting their wits behind bringing Harry Potter to television—and they strongly iterate the fact that it will explore J.K Rowling’s seven-book saga in way more detail. Well, it’s about time something happened with this IP.

A significant name in the cultural zeitgeist, Francesca Gardiner of Succession fame will run the series and will take the role of lead writer. Seems like responsible enough hands. She will find familiar company in Mark Mylod, who is set to direct multiple episodes and also serve as executive producer.

Gardiner’s previous experience will inspire confidence among many and includes producing His Dark Materials and writing for Killing Eve and The Man in the High Castle. Mark Mylod, meanwhile, has already established his mettle and is a two-time Emmy winner for Succession. He will not only direct but also executive produce the series.

Release Date and Production Timeline

Despite the excitement and eagerness (slightly hard to hold in), fans will have to wait a bit longer before they can see this magical world come back to life. Initially, speculations ran riot about a 2026 release. But Casey Bloys suggested that the series might arrive in late 2026 or early 2027 – the casting call timeline doesn’t necessarily mean the start of production.

When talking about the stages of production and his excitement around the project, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav stated,

We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter. I was in London a few weeks ago with Casey [Bloys, CEO of HBO] and Channing [Dungey, chairperson of Warner Bros Television] and we spent some real time with JK and her team. Both sides are just thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great.

The Harry Potter TV series will be available on Max. On cable, it will be made available to subscribers via HBO, similar to how House of the Dragon is currently distributed. For fans outside the US, several multi-year licensing agreements have been struck, particularly one with Crave in Canada, making sure that Harry Potter content will be available to viewers everywhere.

Casting a New Generation of Wizards

The casting process for the big three—Harry, Ron, and Hermione—has also already started, with a search ongoing for young actors aged 9 to 11 from the UK and Ireland. This suggests that the series will start where the books took off: young wizards embarking on their first year at Hogwarts.

While the search for the new Potter kids is well underway, no official casting announcements have been made yet. The studio is reportedly looking for young actors who can grow with their roles, much like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint did in the originals. And with claims of running the show for over ten seasons, a family-like unit is the appropriate call.

Will Any Original Cast Members Return?

Many of us might want to see familiar faces though. While Daniel Radcliffe has firmly stated his desire to let the new generation take the mantle, he hasn’t ruled out the idea entirely. In a recent interview, Radcliffe said

My understanding is that they’re trying to very much start fresh and I’m sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere. So I’m definitely not seeking it out in any way. But I do wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world and I’m very excited to have that torch passed. But I don’t think it needs me to physically pass it.

Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have also expressed support but did not show any inklings to return. From the ones that feel differently, Oscar-winner Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black in the original films, expressed a willingness to re-visit the Wizarding World, this time potentially as Dumbledore. (Yes, please!)

“I would be open to returning to the series,” Oldman said during an interview on the carpet, but he also noted nobody’s yet approached him. He is, nevertheless, very much intrigued by the idea.

J.K Rowling’s involvement

J.K. Rowling will be heavily involved in the new series as an executive producer. Despite controversies that continue to plague her, she has this locked down, stating

Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series.

When quipped about Rowling’s involvement in the series and the controversies surrounding her, especially with her take on transgender rights, Bloys expressed “No, I don’t think this is the forum [to discuss that]. That’s a very online conversation, very nuanced and complicated, and not something we’re going to get into.”

Zaslav, nevertheless, made it clear that Rowling’s involvement is an important cog in the project’s development. Relations between Rowling and the original film cast, however, particularly Radcliffe and Watson, continue to remain strained due to their, lightly put, ‘opposing’ stances on these issues. This might very well pose an obstacle to their eventual return.

The Business of Hogwarts

David Zaslav has made it clear that he has big plans for Harry Potter. He is not only focused on this upcoming TV series but is also open to exploring other avenues. Discussions about expanding the Harry Potter universe through spin-offs or related projects are ongoing. (Who would have thought?)

“When you put those franchises in, it’s the best-performing studio in the world. We need to deploy our best capital, and we need to do it with the best creative people in the world,” said Zaslav.

The timing of this new adaptation is not surprising. Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to reinvigorate its major franchises. Zaslav previously stated that he believed the Harry Potter IP has been “underused,” especially compared to the likes of Lord of the Rings and the DC Universe.

With a significant gap since the release of the original films and the lukewarm reception (at best) of the Fantastic Beasts series, the studio no doubt sees this as the perfect opportunity to reintroduce the franchise to a new generation of fans.

They will also hope to capitalize on the popularity that the Harry Potter universe is enjoying beyond films right now – Hogwarts Legacy became the best-selling video game title of 2023 with over 22 million copies sold. With HBO backing this one, and the names already attached to the project, it seems likely that Harry Potter’s magic is far from fading.
