Oppenheimer Star Could’ve Been Spider-Man Had Andrew Garfield Played a Little Too Much Hardball With Kevin Feige

Alden Ehrenreich was in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, but before that, the actor was in the running to be a part of Sony’s first reboot of Spider-Man, which ended up starring Andrew Garfield instead.

However, it seems that the actor was just not destined to essay any role in the franchise, given that he gave it another go when he auditioned for a different yet still important role in the sequel for the film. However, even this slipped out of the actor’s hand.

Alden Ehrenreich could have been Spider-Man or Green Goblin

Dane DeHaan eventually essayed the role of Peter Parker’s childhood best friend, Harry Osborn, and later his sworn enemy, The Green Goblin, This role, too, could have been essayed by the Oppenheimer alum, but it seemed that Ehrenreich was just not meant to be a part of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise.

While it might be tough to imagine anyone else in The Amazing Spider-Man instead of Andrew Garfield, Ehrenreich would have indeed made a wonderful Green Goblin, as fans considered the version of the character that they got subpar. Ehrenreich was relatively unknown at the time when he was in the running, which might have added to the studios’ reluctance to cast the young actor in such an important role.

Given that it had been barely five years since the previous iteration of the trilogy had wrapped up, Sony needed a slam dunk to follow what was arguably their best take on the character. The actor had made it to the final three choices for the studio, which also included Garfield and Jamie Bell.

The second film in the franchise as a whole seemed more focused on setting up the future, rather than telling a good story in the first place. However, the film prospered thanks to its gut-wrenching scene where it managed to adapt the Death of Gwen Stacy.

How likely is Sony to make The Amazing Spider-Man 3?

Thanks to his appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans have been speculating about whether Sony is going to allow Garfield to finish his Spider-Man trilogy, given that he is now the only actor to not have completed the trilogy yet. There were rumors that Andrew Garfield was the Spider-Man of Sony’s Universe of Spider-Man Characters, but that has since been debunked due to multiple reasons.

Spider-Man: No Way Home could have opened the doors for the character if only Sony could put aside the bad blood that it had with The Amazing Spider-Man alum. However, there seems to be a potent call among fans for a third installment in the franchise, which, thanks to the multiverse, will probably not clash with other live-action Spider-Man projects that might be in the market.
