Steve Carell: ‘It was even a bad joke back then’ on the Most Popular Line in The Office He is Tired of Hearing

After 3 decades in Hollywood, Steve Carell has tried his hand at every genre possible. However, the actor will always be best known for his portrayal of the bumbling yet lovable boss Michael Scott on The Office. Apart from showing fans everything a boss should not be, he has delivered countless memorable lines throughout the show’s nine-season run.

In fact, the character even had one catchphrase that ended up being repeated long after the show came to an end. However, Carell seems to think that the joke has since run its course. After all, he had never really liked it in the first place.

Steve Carell’s thoughts on The Office’s most popular pun

The Office might be a fan-favorite sitcom, but it looks like one of the show’s stars, Steve Carell, had a problem with the iconic “that’s what she said” jokes. Although the line was his character, Michael Scott’s go-to, the 62-year-old has since grown out of it.

During an appearance on BBC Radio 1’s Unpopular Opinions, the actor wound up surprising everyone when he agreed with a fan who called in to state that the jokes were rather “weak.”

I agree with you. It was fun in the moment, and certainly that character thought it was funny, which was the joke.

Although Carell had once thought the jokes were hilarious, he believed the time for them had passed. He explained, “It was even a bad joke back then and the character did not have a good sense of humor. So, I think people forget that.”After all, even the actor understood that the whole joke was actually on his character and not what he said.

With Carell leaving the show after season 7, fans were hoping to see the star reprise his role in the upcoming spin-off, The Paper, but their dreams ended up being crushed.

Steve Carell will not appear in the new The Office series

Just last year, The Office fans were given hope that their favorite characters from Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch would be making a comeback. With Peacock picking up a new iteration of the beloved show, the excitement was palpable.

However, earlier this year, Steve Carell crushed those hopes when he revealed that he would not be a part of the upcoming mockumentary series. During the promotion of his film, IF, the actor opened up to THR about the upcoming series, The Paper.

That is off the cards. It’s just a new thing, and there’s really no reason for my character to show up in something like that.

Although Carell admitted that the idea was great and that he was looking forward to seeing what was in store, he would not be taking part in it. The actor continued, “I will be watching, but I will not be showing up.” After all, the 62-year-old had his run with The Office and had no plans of coming back to a similar series.

While Carell has left his character of Michael Scott behind, the actor has not given up on his television career. In fact, he recently signed with HBO to help bring to life an untitled comedy set on a college campus.
