Liam Hemsworth and Laura Dern starred in Netflix’s recently released film Lonely Planet, a story of a May-December romance where a reclusive writer falls in love with a younger man during a retreat in Morocco. While this isn’t a new TV trope for the audience, fans can rely on the lead stars’ chemistry.
This is all thanks to their efforts forging a good and professional relationship during production. Those who have seen the movie know that it featured quite several intimate scenes and it’s great to hear that Hemsworth and Dern worked hand in hand to deliver their roles.
Laura Dern Was Heaven-Sent for Liam Hemsworth After His Horrible Kiss With Jennifer Lawrence
While speaking with People, Laura Dern shared how working with Liam Hemsworth was the safest she has ever been with. She recalled how they managed to talk through everything, especially with their romantic scenes.
By the time we were doing those scenes, there was nothing we couldn’t talk about together and work out creatively, professionally, all of that.
They worked with an intimacy coordinator to make everyone on set feel comfortable by setting boundaries and discussing everything they needed to do before performing. The experience forged a newfound friendship between Dern and Hemsworth.
Love scenes are usually uncomfortable for actors, but the Australian star had a seasoned actress like Dern as his onscreen partner. Arriving on set prepared and making each other feel comfortable were definitely the secret ingredients of their onscreen chemistry.
This experience is far from his unforgettable, and perhaps worst, onscreen kiss with Jennifer Lawrence on the set of The Hunger Games. The actor recalled locking lips with the actress and enduring the smell and taste of tuna and garlic.
While guesting at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he jokingly said, “Any time I had to kiss Jennifer was pretty uncomfortable, really awkward,” referring to the time she ate and did not brush her teeth before doing the kissing scene.
Thankfully, this did not happen during his shoot with Dern. Lawrence previously admitted she did not eat a strong-smelling food on purpose, but it was sort of just what she had at the time, and perhaps, forgot that she had a scheduled kissing scene with Hemsworth.

Hemsworth also felt the same way working with Dern in Lonely Planet. He told in an interview with Moviefone that the first time they met, “there was this instant sort of connection and trust between us.” He also claimed that they did not have to force the chemistry because they had it right off the bat.
His character, Owen Brophy, does some soul-searching in the film which eventually makes him realize how much Dern’s character meant for his self-improvement. It was important for both actors to develop some sort of personal connection, and Hemsworth interestingly pointed out how they were able to do it onscreen and maintain that bond in real life.
