The Handgun is a classic starting weapon in many games, and it’s not that different in the Silent Hill 2 Remake.
At the end of the day, James Sunderland isn’t a secret agent with a vast knowledge of weaponry—he’s just ‘some guy’ who’s been thrust into the hellish landscapes of the cursed town of Silent Hill.
A Handgun is going to be more than enough for him: For now, at least, until you can get your hands on something better for the harder-hitting dangers out there.

How to Get the Handgun in Silent Hill 2
The Handgun is located in Apartment 217 in 2F of Wood Side Apartments. You can’t just stroll into the room and grab it though.
If you’ve been exploring the Apartments already, you’ll have noticed that a lot of these doors are locked. Some of them can be accessed simply by obtaining the corresponding key, while others require some less-than-traditional methods to get into.
Getting the Handgun is an elaborate process. First, you need to find and use the Chute Courtyard Key to get to the courtyard.
Proceed until you find a key on the floor on the other side of some bars blocking your way, and trigger the cutscene there.
After that, you’ll need to come back to the lobby and get to the other side of the bars (near Room 107), where you’ll get the 2F Hallway Key.
In Room 208, grab the Golden Apple Handle for the coin puzzle you need to complete later. If you’ve played the original game, you’d just have experienced some pretty terrible flashbacks reading the phrase ‘coin puzzle.’

Anyway, once you’ve got the 2F Hallway Key, head to Room 213 and unlock the door. Insider, you should spot a hole in the wall you can pass through to reach Room 217. The Handgun is located here, on top of a shopping cart in the living room.
Some Weapon-Related Tips for the Silent Hill 2 Remake
The Silent Hill 2 Handgun is going to be one of your best friends throughout the game. It’s not going to hold up super well against Pyramid Head, but it’s a great tool for the many Mannequins and Lying Figures you’ll come across.
Konami is extra generous with its ammo too, as you can find plenty of it in the Apartment complex itself and a ton more after. You can use the ammo liberally and expect to find more of it lying across town at any given point.
You can never be too certain, though, so if you’re fighting something weaker, you can’t go wrong with the unmissable Metal Pipe you pick up earlier in the game. Don’t hesitate to melee the enemies you come across, especially if you’re low on ammo.
You’ll also come across a few other weapons in the game, like a Shotgun and a Rifle. These will pack a harder punch than the Handgun, but their ammo is very limited in availability throughout the game.
