Silent Hill 2 Remake: How To Get the In Water Ending

The Silent Hill 2 remake is officially here, and there are a few alternate endings to the story. The story follows James Sunderland returning to the creepy town of Silent Hill to look for his wife Mary as he grapples with his inner demons and comes face-to-face with his dark past.

Players must tread carefully to get this specific ending and do a few things first that fit the narrative. The game developers of Bloober Team wanted the players to have full authority and control of James’ fate, and this ending is one of many ways to interpret James’ journey.

The Silent Hill 2 Remake Lets Players Dictate How James’ Story Will End

Confronting reality and facing the past can often be the same thing.

There are a few ways of ending the story of the remake of Silent Hill 2, others can only be accessed by starting a New Game Plus file like the Dog, Rebirth, and UFO. There are much easier ways to end the game, like leaving the town, and this guide will teach you not to do that through the in-water ending.

If the ending players ended up with was leaving the town, which heavily requires them to monitor James’ health, this alternate ending is the direct opposite. Players will have to make sure that James’ health is declining, which represents his lack of will to live without his wife by his side.

Tip
Avoid using syringes and other health items to get this ending.

Silent Hill 2 is not for the faint of heart, and having low health can put them at risk of dying immediately. James will encounter the Pyramid Head, the ultimate manifestation of James’ guilt, and this enemy can pack a nasty punch. Players can do something risky, like willingly take damage while they run away with what little life James has left in the tank.

Players will also need to open their inventory and inspect Angela’s knife. Doing so represents James’ will to inflict self-harm as he concludes that his life is meaningless and empty without Mary. James will also encounter a character named Maria, and just like the ending where he leaves town, do not entertain her advances and limit any form of interaction as much as possible.

Failing to do so will grant players another ending instead. It is worth noting that players can pay no attention to this character; however, Maria is now their responsibility and must be protected from any threat in Silent Hill 2. Later in the story, James will have to leave her behind, and players can move on without looking back or thinking about her.

Avoid looking at Mary’s photograph because this would represent James’ will to live. The point of this ending is that James has lost his drive and fails to accept the passing of his wife by his hands.

This Alternate Ending Is Arguably the Darkest in the Remake of Silent Hill 2

Living without purpose is enough reason for James to take his own at the end of the story.

James Sunderland is a broken man hoping to find his dead wife in the eerie town of Silent Hill; unfortunately, all he sees is pain and despair. The foggy town makes it hard for players to navigate, and it is plagued by creatures that mean to harm the player. It is worth noting these creatures are the literal definition of stuff made from nightmares.

These atrocious creatures are all figments of James’ creative and twisted imagination. Perhaps it is all the guilt and regret compounding on him for what he did to his wife before the events of Silent Hill 2.

James hops in his car and drives to the lake with the remains of his wife sitting at the back of his car. This ending depicts James being unwilling to forgive himself and having no reason to keep going without Mary.

Unlike the ending where he pleads to the Old Gods of Silent Hill to bring back his wife, or leave town and live a life of redemption, this is a sad ending and a desperate attempt to reconnect with a dead loved one and escape his past.
