“This was like performance art”: Grey’s Anatomy Writer Elisabeth Finch Shaved Her Head and Took Puke Breaks to Fake Cancer

Medical drama Grey’s Anatomy has been going on for several years now. Further, it also featured several interesting characters as well as storylines. But the one that happened behind the scenes caught the most attention. It involved a writer of the show who faked having cancer. Not only that, but she also went to great lengths in order to maintain this deception.

The infamous writer in question is Elisabeth Finch, who in order to make her fake cancer diagnosis seem genuine, shaved her head. She also took puke breaks in between the filming of the show.

Former Colleague Detailed More About Elisabeth Finch’s Web of Lies

Elisabeth Finch worked as a writer for Grey’s Anatomy, where she shared many personal stories about her health. She wrote essays for different magazines, claiming she had a rare bone cancer called chondrosarcoma. In these stories, she said she went through chemotherapy, lost a kidney, and needed a knee replacement because of a misdiagnosis.

She even used these made-up experiences in the show’s storylines, which made them seem more real. However, in March 2022, things started to change. Disney began investigating her claims after Finch’s estranged wife revealed that her medical history might not be true.

When Finch was asked to provide proof of her claims, she refused and was put on administrative leave. Eventually, she resigned from her job. By December 2022, she admitted that she had been lying all along.

Now a former colleague of the writer has brought forth more of her lies out in the open. Writer Andy Reaser added via EW that:

This was like performance art. She was showing up to work with a shaved head and a, you know, a greenish hue. She looked like she lived in a microwave. She was eating these Saltines and drinking ginger ale and going to the bathroom to take puke breaks from her chemo.

Not only that, but this lie of hers also influenced a documentary titled Anatomy of Lies. This series aims to delve deeper into Finch’s journey, exploring not only her time on Grey’s Anatomy. But also, her earlier work and the impact of her deceit on her career and the industry as a whole.

Her return comes after a brief hiatus, during which she reduced her on-screen presence to focus on a new Hulu project titled Natalia, based on the real-life story of Natalia Grace. Despite appearing in only eight episodes of Season 19 and four in Season 20 due to industry strikes, her return has sparked huge excitement among viewers.

The Season 20 finale left Meredith in a hopeful place with Nick as they discussed buying a home together outside Boston, signaling new beginnings. Shonda Rhimes, the show’s creator, has always emphasized that Grey’s Anatomy wouldn’t exist without Meredith Grey.

With Pompeo back, the creative team, now led by showrunner Meg Marinis, is poised to explore fresh storylines while honoring the character’s legacy.

You can watch Grey’s Anatomy on Hulu.
