Akira Toriyama’s Final Interview Reveals His Last Wish for Dragon Ball Daima

Akira Toriyama was a powerhouse of creativity right until his unfortunate death in March 2024 at the age of 68. The author gave birth to incredible franchises like Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump and is considered a legend in the manga industry.

Dragon Ball Daima marked the first new project from the franchise after the death of the author, and it is also the last series that he had worked on. Needless to say, it holds a lot of meaning for not just fans but also the rest of the industry.

Dragon Ball Daima is the sixth installment of the Dragon Ball anime franchise and is also the last one to have been written by creator Akira Toriyama. It was announced on the 40th anniversary of the franchise, and Toriyama has been heavily credited in the teaser trailer of the series as well.

In what is presumed to be his last interview, Akira Toriyama left fans a message regarding Dragon Ball Daima.

I drew not only the story itself, but also the worldview, the design of the characters and the mechas. I believe it will be a production rich in content, not just intense action. I would be grateful if you could enjoy watching.

-Akira Toriyama

Dragon Ball is mostly known for its intense action scenes, which will also be featured in Dragon Ball Daima. However, the latest addition to the franchise will be much more than just a battle-fest. From the interview, it seems like Toriyama wanted it to be ‘rich in content,’ which could mean a proper lore that stands apart as well as a good story. The author’s last promise has made fans hopeful for a Dragon Ball anime that will actually focus on plot and character development rather than just more Super Saiyan modes.

While another original Dragon Ball series, Dragon Ball GT, has been highly criticized by fans, it seems like Daima has already set itself apart by featuring the entire selection of characters as kids. Additionally, Toriyama’s close involvement with the creation and execution of the series has given it a special and nostalgic value.

Akira Toriyama won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2024, which was held in December 2023. He was supposed to receive the award on stage on March 8, 2024, but the author sadly passed away before he could be personally present. However, his comments on winning the award are present to show his involvement with the creation of Dragon Ball Daima.

In the beginning, the author embarrassingly admits that he never had much interest in anime. Even after his works were animated, he didn’t watch much of it. However, when the proposal of Dragon Ball Daima was brought up, he slipped into its creation process.

Dragon Ball DAIMA, which will be rolled out in 2024, was originally planned to be an original anime series without me, but as I gave advice here and there, I ended up getting deeply involved with the project without realizing it.

-Akira Toriyama

Getting involved without meaning to might be the most Akira Toriyama-esque thing that the author could have done, and it has given fans hope that Daima is a promising series. From the world-building and character designs to designs of the mecha featured in the story and many other aspects, Akira Toriyama was knee-deep in creating the perfect base for Dragon Ball Daima.

Dragon Ball Daima is currently streaming on Hulu and Crunchyroll.
