Tatiana Maslany: ‘It felt like part of the fun’ on She-Hulk Accurately Predicting the Backlash in 1 Episode

Actress Tatiana Maslany made her MCU debut playing the lead role in the miniseries She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. The series premiered in 2022 and received mixed reviews. Some aspects of the show, primarily its visual effects, humor, and “woke ideas” received backlash on social media, especially from the male section of the audience.

During a recent interview, Maslany spoke about the backlash the series faced on social media. However, the actress highlighted how the show’s creative team had already anticipated such backlash over a female character essentially acting as a replacement for another more popular male character. Here is what Maslany had to say about the negativity surrounding She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

Tatiana Maslany Reacted to She-Hulk Predicting the Online Backlash It Faced

Tatiana Maslany played the role of Jennifer Walters / She-Hulk in the MCU miniseries She-Hulk. The character is a cousin of Bruce Banner / Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo, and receives the same powers after she is cross-contaminated with his blood.

Some viewers criticized the series for some of its aspects, especially for focusing on a female protagonist. Moreover, the series was released when superhero movies and shows were abundant, making many fans deem it unnecessary, mainly because of its comedic tone.

During an interview with The Independent, Maslany addressed the criticism and admitted that the creative team had anticipated the backlash over a female version of the Hulk. She said:

When we started to get the same responses that [Gao] had actually baked into the writing, it felt like part of the fun.

Maslany made the above statement, explaining that showrunner Jessica Gao had predicated the backlash and incorporated it into the show’s writing.

The actress was referencing scenes from the series such as the one in the third episode, where social media users criticized Jennifer Walters for being another new female superhero, a feeling that was predominant among the MCU fanbase at the time. As a result, Maslany felt that the show was ahead of the curve when it came to dealing with such negative comments.

During the same interview, Maslany spoke about her criticism of Disney boss Bog Iger. At the time of the 2023 Hollywood strikes, Maslany called Iger out of touch after the latter described the strikes as extremely disturbing. In response to her criticism, Maslany stated the following:

In those moments, you’re so heated up. It’s hard to articulate yourself in a way that you want when you’re on the picket line with everybody.

From Maslany’s words, it is clear that the actress felt very strongly about the reason behind the strikes and simply made a poor choice of words while expressing her frustrations over the situation.

Aside from her comments about Iger, Maslany expressed in early 2024 that a second season of She-Hulk was extremely unlikely. The Orphan Black actress explained that the series blew its budget during its first season and was extremely expensive to produce. As a result, Marvel Studios has likely passed upon making a second season.
