Naoshi Arakawa Made Kaori and Kosei Incredibly Contrasting Characters to Better Express the Themes of Your Lie in April

Your Lie in April also explores the complexity of human relationships, from the bonds of friendship to the depths of romantic love. The show portrays the intricacies of human emotions and how they shape our relationships with others. There are various themes that surround the story that can touch the human heart in various ways. For some, it’s the wholesome feeling of love. For others, it’s the pain of loss and death.

Nevertheless, it has captured the imagination of many anime fans in the world and set a new benchmark for romance, for better or worse. Kosei’s journey towards healing begins when he meets Kaori, who shows him that music can be a source of joy rather than a painful reminder of his past. Similarly, Kaori’s love for Kosei helps her confront her own fears and insecurities. She finds solace in Kosei’s presence and uses their shared love of music to express her emotions.

The main theme of Your Lie in April, according to Naoshi Arakawa

Fans can interpret the story in their own ways and dig out themes that apply to them and their experience.

But the central theme of Your Lie in April, according to series creator Naoshi Arakawa, is death and rebirth. Through the power of metaphor and symbolism, Arakawa-sensei shows the contrast between the characters of Kosei and Kaori. While Kosei strived hard for his love for music, Kaori’s illness took her away from it. As a result, Kosei was reborn as a passionate musician, whereas Kaori’s passion for music stopped at the time of death.

There is a contrast between Kosei, the pianist and Kaori, the violinist. Throughout the story—at the beginning, he couldn’t listen, he couldn’t hear the music. Then, over the course of the story, Kosei was kind of reborn as a pianist. But at the same time, while Kosei is regaining his strength and confidence as a musician, Kaori is weakening, weakening, weakening. So there’s that contrast; in that way, the story talks about rebirth and also death.

As mentioned before, one of the most prominent themes in Your Lie in April is the healing power of love. It’s through this feeling that Kosei begins to rediscover his passion and finds the courage to confront the trauma of his past.

Another one is the pain of loss. The show portrays the different ways in which people cope with loss, whether it’s the loss of a loved one or the loss of one’s passion. Kosei’s journey towards healing is a poignant portrayal of the pain of losing someone you love and the long road to recovery.

The reason for Naoshi Arakawa to create a story based on music

A lot of fans may not know this but Naoshi Arakawa is, first and foremost, a sports manga writer. Sayonara, Football, and Farewell, My Dear Cramer are some of his best works, which revolved around the world of soccer. After drawing stuff like that, Arakawa-sensei wanted a change of genre and decided to explore the world of music for once.

Sometimes you get bored if you just stick creating just one genre of stories. At times like that, you just want to try different genres to challenge yourself to see things in a new way, take a fresh approach to storytelling. That’s why I decided to explore the world of music instead of sports with Your Lie in April.

He said he was inspired by an unknown movie or TV series that had characters playing the violin. He also decided to focus on classical music because, at that time, it didn’t make sense for him to draw a story about rock music or a rock band, because there was a series called Beck (by Harold Sakuishi) running in the same magazine as Your Lie in April. He didn’t expect the series to be this popular. Therefore, he used some of those romcom elements in his later works, like Atwight Game and Orion’s Board.

Your Lie in April anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
