I feared menopause would make sex a chore but Kenny and I are back to daytime romps, says Gabby Logan

A DECADE ago the menopause was rarely spoken about, certainly not in public.

Despite the fact it affects every woman, “the change” was considered taboo and frequently suffered in silence.

Now menopause is discussed everywhere; in podcasts, documentaries, and social media, and targeted with a growing market of products including supplements and herbal remedies to help ease its symptoms.

Increased awareness – fuelled by The Sun’s Fabulous Menopause Matters campaign – has been a life-saver. But with more information available than ever, it can be difficult to know where to find accurate advice.

If you want to know the symptoms of perimenopause – the lead-up to your final period – or whether you should be avoiding certain foods or using hormone therapy, Sun Health is here to help cut through the noise.

Dr Philippa Kaye – GP and author of the new book The Science Of Menopause – answers the most common questions on the subject and BBC presenter Gabby Logan shares her own experience of it.

Gabby Logan says HRT reignited her libido after becoming so disinterested in sex with her husband she worried it would “become a duty’.

The Welsh presenter, 51, first realised she was perimenopausal at the age of 47, but didn’t recognise it as such.

Rather, Gabby says she just felt like a “lesser version of herself”.

I couldn’t think that it had anything to do with the menopause. I was only in my mid-40s

And while the mum of two credits HRT with bringing her back, she has also taken up cold swimming among other lifestyle hacks to feel good again.

Gabby, who is married to ex-Scottish international rugby Kenny Logan, tells Sun Health: “I was feeling like a lesser version of my usual self. I didn’t know what was wrong with me.

“I’ve always been into health and fitness, and I started being extra careful about what I ate and I was training more — things that normally made me feel really good — but were now having no effect.

Out of control

“I couldn’t think that it had anything to do with the menopause. I was only in my mid-40s.”

But it was only when Gabby invited broadcaster Mariella Frostrup on her podcast, The Mid Point, in 2020 that everything clicked at last.

Gabby, who has 19-year-old twins Lois and Reuben with Kenny, says: “She was talking about her menopause, describing the symptoms — anxiety, impatience, shouting at family and friends, losing your temper over silly things, feeling a bit out of control and not on top of stuff, feeling tired a lot of the time with low energy levels and having brain fog.

“I thought, ‘Hello? This sounds very familiar’.

“My libido was definitely affected by the menopause and perimenopause. I found I didn’t want to have sex with my husband as much, and it felt like something I was going to have to do even if I didn’t really want to.

“It was almost like, ‘Is this going to become a duty?’ So many women say this and I didn’t want to become one of them.

“I wanted to keep enjoying having sex. When I understood that I could get my former sex drive back, it was an enormous relief.” Gabby saw a doctor who prescribed HRT after tests revealed her hormones were “on the floor” and she likely only had a couple of periods left.

“I was surprised to hear this but not particularly emotional about it. I just wanted to feel like me again,” Gabby says.

My libido came back within about a week and our sex life was back on track — even to the extent of having daytime sex. Our kids will kill me if I say any more!

“I’d had a very healthy relationship with Kenny. I loved him and fancied him, and hadn’t been able to understand why I no longer wanted to have sex as much as I had before.

“My libido came back within about a week and our sex life was back on track — even to the extent of having daytime sex. Our kids will kill me if I say any more!”

The couple faced more challenges when Kenny was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022, requiring surgery.

And while Gabby admits she has felt “bereft” transitioning to an “empty nest”, she focuses on hobbies to fill the void.

She says: “I regularly go cold-water swimming.

“It’s something I kind of fell into by accident.”

It’s one of several habits that relieve her menopause symptoms.

She says: “The menopause affects our physical and mental wellbeing, things like heart health and the threat of osteoporosis. Exercise can help guard against both, particularly weight training for osteoporosis.

“Simple walking and cycling are great things to do.

“What helps me is being as holistic as I can.

“I make sure I take all the right vitamins and minerals for a woman of my age.

“It’s also a good idea to read up on the menopause before it actually happens so that it doesn’t overwhelm you.

“There’s nothing like prepping before midlife actually hits.”

Millions of iPhones can schedule texts and they’ll send even with no signal – just don’t make ‘offline’ mistake

YOU can now schedule texts on your iPhone to send at almost any time.

Better still, the message will go through even if you don’t have signal when the message is due to deliver.

Look out for the dotted line around texts – it means they’re scheduled messages[/caption]

It’s all thanks to a new iPhone feature called Send Later.

This was bundled into Apple’s new iOS 18 update, and is available right now.

Apple explains: “If it’s too late at night or too important to forget, you can schedule a message to be sent at a later time.”

There’s also no additional cost to scheduling a text versus sending it normally.

HOW TO SCHEDULE A TEXT

First, make sure that you’ve got an iPhone running iOS 18 or later.

Just go into Settings > General > Software Update to check.

Thankfully the recipient doesn’t need to have iOS 18 to receive scheduled texts.

Then simply go into the Messages app on your iPhone, tap on the plus, then choose Send Later.

Tap the time and then choose an option from the scheduler.

This will determine when you text is ultimately sent.

You’ll notice that the edges of the text field become a dashed line. This means you’re scheduling a text rather than sending it out right.

Finally enter a message and then tap Send – the blue arrow.

Your message will appear with a dashed line until it’s delivery time.

You need to be online to schedule the text, but once you’ve done that, the message is encrypted and stored on Apple’s servers.

So it’ll send even if you’re offline when the time comes to send it.

SCHEDULING IPHONE TEXTS – TRICKS AND CATCHES

Firstly, note that you can only schedule a text message up to 14 days in the future.

Secondly, it’s possible to reschedule, edit, and even cancel scheduled messages at any time before the delivery.

But you can’t do any of this unless you’re online.

iOS 18 devices – can your iPhone get it?

Here are the devices that can get the new iOS 18 update

  • iPhone SE (2nd generation)

To adjust a message, simply hold down on the message and then choose an option.

You can also choose to “send it immediately” if you’ve changed your mind about delaying a text.

Cleveland Browns make major Deshaun Watson bench decision with struggling team 1-5 ahead of Bengals game

THE Cleveland Browns have made a major bench decision over struggling star Deshaun Watson.

The AFC North team are having a dreadful season, with a shocking 1-5 record.

Deshaun Watson is having an awful season, with the Browns going 1-5 for 2024-25[/caption]

They are bottom of their division, and will need a miracle to even make the playoffs.

Their offense has been a particular concern, with quarterback Watson in awful form.

This is despite them handing the controversial QB a $230 million, five year contract.

Now, head coach Kevin Stefanski has spoken out about Watson’s future as a starter.

There have been calls from fans, analysts and ex-players to bench the 29-year-old.

The Browns lost 20-16 to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday to add to their woes.

“I think Deshaun gives us the best chance to win,” said Stefanski.

“He continues to give us the best chance to win.”

The Browns backup quarterback is Jameis Winston, with Dorian Thompson-Robinson third in line.

Watson opened up on the offensive issues after the Eagles loss.

He threw for just 168 yards with no touchdowns, going 16 of 23.

The ex-Houston Texans ace was also sacked five times.

“Me being the quarterback of this offense with Kevin and Ken, we have to do something a little bit,” Watson said.

“I don’t know what we have to do, but we need to do something to lock in, so we don’t cost ourselves anymore games.

“We’ve got to really turn this around.”

The Browns were hammered 34-13 by the Washington Commanders last week.

Watson completed just 53.6 per cent of his passes during that game.

And Stefanski had to come out to defend his quarterback following that showdown.

“We’re not changing quarterbacks,” Stefanski said.

“We need to play better. I need to coach better.

“That’s really what it is.”

Toys R Us plots massive return with brand new location – but shoppers call store a ‘poor excuse’ for comeback

SOME customers aren’t hopeful about the select Toys R Us locations planned for openings this fall and into next year.

The iconic retailer had been around since 1948 before financial struggles led to a bankruptcy filing in 2017.

Toys R Us cited around $5 billion in debt and expenses of around $400 million yearly toward the outstanding balance, per the New York Times.

While it originally intended to reorganize and resolve its debt issues, Toys R Us was forced to close 735 stores by June 2018, with the last remaining stores hanging a few years longer until the proceedings were finally complete in January 2021.

Things changed in March of that year when WHP Global acquired a majority stake in Tru Kids, the parent company to Toys R Us, Babies R Us, and other brands.

WHP Global then opened the first post-bankruptcy Toys R Us store at American Dream Mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

It later made waves at the end of 2023 for opening an 11,000-square-foot flagship store at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, in November 2023, with plans for at least 24 flagship locations in total.

PARTNER PROMISE

In July, WHP Global confirmed it reached a license agreement with the Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM), per a press release.

The partnership would lead to the opening of Toys R Us locations within the NEX stores on bases around the country and the world.

Stanley Silverstein, chief commercial officer at WHP Global, said that the agreement with NEXCOM would significantly benefit military families.

“We are thrilled to team up with NEXCOM to bring the joy and excitement of Toys R Us to Navy families around the globe,” Silverstein said in the release.

“This collaboration allows us to extend our reach and provide a unique shopping experience that caters specifically to the needs of those who serve our country.”

No confirmed opening date was given, but WHP Global noted the NEX Oceana in Virginia Beach, VA, as its first location for the new Toys R Us shops.

CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS

The wait finally ended for customers in Virginia Beach on October 12, according to a post on Facebook.

Customer Todd Payton took a snapshot of a banner that noted the date as the grand opening for Toys R Us and NEXCOM.

Still, some shoppers weren’t thrilled about Toys R Us’ hallowed return and even claimed that it wasn’t anything like what the retailer used to be.

For our military families, we hope this Toys R Us expansion evokes a deep sense of nostalgia while also providing an even greater selection and a more engaging experience!

Richard Honiball, on behalf of NEXCOMExecutive Vice President, Global Chief Merchandising and Marketing Officer at WHP Global

“That’s not Toys R Us,” a customer fumed in a comment.

“If that is toys r us then it’s a poor excuse for one,” another fumed.

“At least the name survived, give them time to grow,” a third encouraged.

PLANNING AHEAD

The second Toys R Us location to open will be at NEX Jacksonville, Florida, although the opening date remains unclear.

WHP Global noted in the release that after the Virginia Beach opening, most of the other stores would arrive in 2025.

All of the NEXCOM Toys R Us stores will “showcase a wide selection of the hottest toys and games,” according to the July release.

Additionally, the Toys R Us mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe, will be around for greetings and pictures.

Navy families are also promised “exclusive promotions” and “special events.”

Toys R Us also made a similar deal with Macy’s, with plans for 400 in-store locations and several flagship stores, per a 2022 press release.
