Millions of phones receive free Android 15 upgrade TODAY with important tool to stop street thieves and more

GOOGLE’S highly-anticipated Android 15 upgrade is finally landing on smartphones today with a bunch of mega new features.

The tech giant made the unusual step of releasing a brand new device, the Pixel 9 series, without the new operating system loaded on it in August.

Google has gone big on anti-theft and privacy this time around on Android[/caption]

From today, Pixel handsets will receive the bumper upgrade.

Among the biggest additions are improved security features following a wave of phone thefts.

More than 200 smartphones are snatched every day in the UK currently — some 78,000 a year.

The rate is the highest for over a decade, Home Office statistics reveal, with overall thefts from a person increasing by more than a third.

Earlier this year, Google revealed a genius deterrent called Theft Detection Lock which automatically locks a smartphone if it’s snatched out of your hands by a thief, meaning they can’t raid your bank accounts while it’s unlocked.

AI cleverly detects the sort of motion associated with snatches followed by running biking or driving away.

Android 15 also boasts extra protections that prevent thieves from guessing your passwords and accessing sensitive information.

Elsewhere on your phone, you’ll now find a private space where you can keep apps you don’t know want to keep hidden from view.

But aside from security and privacy, there are some other useful tools to use.

For photography lovers, there’s low light boost and in-app camera controls which now work better in low-light conditions.

Third-party apps also have more camera control, like more precise flash control.

Android users will also be able to use satellite connectivity to send and receive messages without a mobile or Wi-Fi connection for emergencies.

The upgrade is rolling out to eligible Pixel handsets from today.

But some new features are limited to newer models.

Isolate sounds with Audio Magic Eraser is now available to reduce distracting sounds in your videos, like howling winds or noisy crowds – only avaialble for Pixel 8 and newer.

New editing capabilities let you adjust specific sounds to make them louder or quieter too.

Even the Pixel Weather app has had some work done with a pollen tracker added so people can check current pollen index levels, pollen types and forecasts before stepping outside.

And specifically for the UK and Japan, Call Screen has been improved.

Google says a more human-sounding voice can talk to the caller and show you what they’re saying in real time, helping you decide if you want to pick up.

And Brit users will have access to improved replies as well, so you can respond to things like appointment confirmations and reservations without having to answer the phone.

Why you should upgrade now

By Jamie Harris, Assistant Technology and Science Editor at The Sun

Android 15’s big new anti-theft features come amid an explosion in such crime.

Policing Minister Dame Diana Johnson recently said phone companies “must ensure any stolen phones can be quickly, easily and permanently disabled, rather than re-registered for sale” – and it seems Google has moved to help with just that.

Google says Theft Detection Lock is rolling out gradually to ensure compatibility with various devices, starting today with Android devices that cover 90 per cent of active users worldwide.

When you do receive Android 15, you’d be wise to set it up and switch it on.

Police splash $150k on Cybertruck with flashing lights & storage for WEAPONS… but EV won’t be used to chase criminals

A MAJOR police department has splashed out on a $150,000 Tesla Cybertruck – but it won’t be used to chase criminals.

The quirky EV, which has faced multiple recalls since its release last year – including issues with the accelerator and windshield wipers – comes kitted out with flashing lights and a storage space for weapons.

Police in California unveiled the new vehicle for their Irvine fleet in a recent video shared on social media, revealing that it is “the first police cybertruck in the nation.”

But while it may look the part, the Cybertruck is unlikely to see any proper action and will be mostly used for show.

The Irvine Police department plans to use the Elon Musk creation as part of its Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program in a bid to make its anti-drug events at schools more engaging.

However, the Irvine PD said it will still be capable of responding to emergencies and assisting the local community when required.

In a post on their Facebook page, the department said: “For over three decades, our D.A.R.E. officers have driven attention-grabbing and one-of-a-kind vehicles that never fail to turn heads and excite student.”

Irvine’s D.A.R.E. program, which has been running for 40 years, is known for using unique vehicles to connect with students.

Police spokesperson Kyle Oldoerp said: “The goal has always been to have a unique vehicle that doesn’t look like a police car, that is approachable by kids and students to encourage interaction between officers and our schools and our community.”

Kitted out by Unplugged Performance, who are world-renowned for their premium upgrades for Tesla vehicles, the Cybertruck comes with emergency lights, custom graphics, and police communications tech inside the cabin, as well as a space for weapons.

Since its launch, the Cybertruck has commanded plenty of attention for itself.

Its launch event was particularly memorable, with Tesla’s chief designer, Franz von Holzhausen, accidentally shattering one of its windows while attempting to demonstrate its toughness.

The massive slab-shaped vehicle has previously been dubbed “indestructible” when its creator unveiled the bulletproof car back in 2019.

Despite concerns, Oldoerp said the police department isn’t worried and even mentioned that recalls are routine for their fleet.

What’s more, a Tesla repair facility is located nearby to handle any issues they may have.

Ordinarily, the department will fork out $116,000 for a standard patrol car, the Ford Interceptor, compared to the $150,000 price-tag for the Cybertruck.

But while the Interceptor typically lasts three to four years, the Cybertruck is expected to serve for a decade.

Better yet, they believe they’ll save $6,000 in fuel over the next five years thanks to its electric power.

A host of A-list celebs have been spotted behind the wheel of a Cybertruck, including Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Shaq, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Pharrell Williams.

Patrick Mahomes asks ‘why is he so good at that?’ as Aaron Rodgers completes feat Chiefs star never has

PATRICK Mahomes still can’t believe how Aaron Rodgers has a knack for achieving a rare feat that even the three-time Super Bowl MVP has failed to do in his career.

The Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback, 28, reacted to an impressive play made by Rodgers during the New York Jets‘ 23-20 Monday Night Football loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The Jets were down 20-10 and had one last play to end the first half when Rodgers heaved a successful 52-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass to wide receiver Allen Lazard.

The strike cut the halftime deficit to 20-17 as social media buzzed over Rodgers’ stunning throw.

Mahomes was among those who commented on the pass on X.

“Why is Aaron so good at that [laughing emojis],” he wrote on Monday night.

Mahomes has never completed a Hail Mary touchdown pass in his six-plus seasons in the NFL.

NBA superstar LeBron James replied to Mahomes and seemed to agree with him.

“Right!! It’s ridiculous!” the four-time NBA champion commented.

Mahomes and LeBron referred to Rodgers’ past and present history of completing miraculous Hail Mary passes.

During his tenure with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers achieved three Hail Marys for touchdowns.

Two of the Hail Mary touchdowns came in the playoffs, including one that forced overtime against the Arizona Cardinals in 2015.

Rodgers’ touchdown pass on Monday came with confusion, however, as one ref called it incomplete and another called it a touchdown.

The ball popped out of Lazard’s hand after he caught it, but the officials talked it over and ruled it a touchdown.

The call was right as Lazard had possession in the end zone before the ball was ripped out by Bills players.

The Jets still went on to lose their third straight game.

Rodgers threw a game-sealing interception for the second consecutive game.

He ended with 294 passing yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

It was the Jets’ first game under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich.

The franchise fired Robert Saleh after last week’s 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London.

The Jets will go on the road to face the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7 on Sunday Night Football.

No10 refuse to deny that Sir Keir met Taylor Swift after popstar was granted taxpayer-funded security in London

DOWNING Street today refused to deny that Sir Keir Starmer personally met with Taylor Swift after ministers intervened in talks about her security.

The Sun understands the PM and the popstar spent time together at her Wembley show on August 20.

The meet-up came after the Met eventually decided to give the Shake It Off singer taxpayer funded blue-light security, with senior Labour politicians admitting they were involved in talks about the move.

A No10 spokesperson this afternoon insisted it was “entirely legitimate” for ministers to hold talks with cops about security for major events.

But asked whether the PM and Cruel Summer songstress met up, they said: “I don’t have any updates.”

Pressed again on whether Downing St could deny Sir Keir met Swift after intervening in security arrangements, they added: “Again, first and foremost these are operational decisions that are taken by the Metropolitan Police, and you have seen their statements confirming that themselves.

Fat jab rollout could ‘overwhelm’ NHS as clinics are already struggling

“At the same time it is right and expected that the Government, mayor and police do have a dialogue and discuss the policing of major events in the capital.”

Sir Keir attended the Wembley show after being gifted freebie tickets by Swift’s music label.

Last night The Sun revealed that Tay’s mum negotiated her VIP security directly with ex-No10 aide Sue Gray.

Sir Keir’s then Chief of Staff was central to convincing Met Police chiefs into the rethink.

They had rejected calls for outriders to whisk the superstar to Wembley.

But sources claim Andrea Swift, who acts as Taylor’s manager, threatened to cancel the August dates of her Eras Tour if their taxpayer-funded security demands were not met.

The row has led to questions in the Commons — including over who instructed the Government’s top lawyer to soothe police fears.

Attorney General Richard Hermer was dragged into Swiftgate with Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan — who were also involved in negotiations.

Shadow Cabinet Office minister John Glen asked: “What role did Downing Street play in the VIP escort, further to the free tickets for Taylor Swift from Universal Music?”

Minister Ellie Reeves declined to comment.

Inside tragedy of ‘India’s Titanic’ sunk by torpedoes sending $43m treasure to the depths…before loot secretly recovered

THE treasured cargo of a cruise liner dubbed ‘India’s Titanic’ was secretly recovered 75 years after it was sunk by a Japanese submarine.

On November 20, 1942, the SS Tilawa departed from Mumbai, India, to Durban, South Africa, with 958 people on board including 732 passengers and four gunners.

As well as people, the steam ship was packed full with 6,000 tonnes of cargo which included 60 tonnes of silver bullion.

However, the ship only had nine lifeboats and when it was struck by two torpedos from a Japanese Imperial Navy submarine in the early hours of November 23.

The SS Tilawa sank to the bottom of the Indian Ocean, 930 miles northeast of the Seychelles along with its cargo.

The tragedy took the lives of 280 people despite the heroic rescues of hundreds of people by HMS Birmingham and SS Carthage.

BURIED TREASURE

With the tragedy becoming lost in the web of devastation during the Second World War, it was not until 2014, that attention turned back to India’s Titanic.

That year, British salvage company Argentum Exploration Ltd. launched a deep ocean search mission to find the wreckage site and survey the area.

The ship was located around 4,500 meters down and 800 miles from land.

It was lying on its port side at an angle of around 45 degrees after landing on a rocky ledge, according to the Tilawa commemoration website.

Three years after surveying it, Argentum successfully salvaged 2,364 of the 2,391 silver bars that were onboard after the Bombay Mint sold them to the Union of South Africa for coinage.

The treasured cargo was found in the opium room of the ship after the mail and species room were found empty.

It was then transported to the UK where Argentum, owned by hedge fund leader Paul Marchall, declared it as their property under maritime law claiming payment for recovery from South Africa.

However, South Africa refuted these claims and the issue was escalated to the Supreme Court which ruled in May that the $43 million silver belonged to South Africa.

SURVIVOR ACCOUNTS

Meanwhile, the remaining two known survivors of the wreckage continue to think about that day.

On November 22, 2023, the so-called ‘Forgotten Tragedy’ was commemorated by the Tilawa1942 organisation with a survivor dinner.

Alvind Jani who was three years old at the time detailed his mother’s heroic efforts to save him from drowning when he spoke to BBC’s Witness History the year of the commemoration.

“She carried me and tied me up in a shawl at the back so she had free hands and then slowly from the rope she came down to the lifeboat,” he said.

“They were allowing about 15 to 20 people and in the boat, there were some biscuits and some water.”

Meanwhile, Tej Prakash Mangat who was nine years old at the time explained how she felt the water rising against her legs before her father managed to take her to the safety of a life raft.

“I heard my father calling my name and then I felt the water everywhere and he said ‘Give me your hand’ and he lifted me up and took me to the lifeboat,” she said.

Rather than stay in safety with his daughter, Mangat’s father went back to look for her brothers and promised to return soon.

This was when the second torpedo struck the SS Tilawa.

“I saw that people were screaming and crying and I looked up at the ship, I was waiting for my father,” Mangat explained.

“It was a full moon when we heard a big bang. It was a second torpedo. I saw the black smoke and the ship sank.”

While her father managed to swim to the lifeboat after clinging to the railings of the sinking cruise liner, her brothers perished.

A commemoration event marking the 82nd anniversary of the tragedy will be held in Durban on November 23.

Meanwhile, a memorial was held in Bombay in 2022 on the 80th anniversary.

Walgreens CEO plans $1 billion ‘turnaround’ cost-cutting plan and 1,200 stores are set to close

WALGREENS has announced the mass closure of thousands of stores as the retailer’s CEO changes strategy.

Tim Wentworth, the CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, has revealed that the pharmacy chain would shut 1,200 stores over the next three years.

AP
Wentworth added he would be putting a $1 billion cost-cutting program in place[/caption]

The company also narrowly beat Wall Street’s lowered estimates for fourth-quarter adjusted profit, and forecast fiscal-year earnings that were mostly in-line with expectations, Reuters reported.

Wentworth added he plans to fire a number of mid-level executives and put in place a $1billion cost-cutting program.

“At first blush, (the forecast) looks better than worst-case scenario,” Leerink Partners analyst Michael Cherny said.

News of the closures means that by 2027 one in seven Walgreens will have shuttered.

Around 500 of the stores scheduled for the chop will shutters over the next year, although their locations have not yet been revealed.

“This turnaround will take time, but we are confident it will yield significant financial and consumer benefits over the long term,” Wentworth said in a statement.

The closures were announced in June but the company had not disclosed the number of affected stores at that time. It had over 8,000 stores in the United States as of August 31 last year.

In the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2024, Walgreens said it recorded impairment charges on the goodwill of home care provider CareCentrix and equity investment in China.

The U.S Sun has reached out to Walgreens for comment.

‘WORSE THAN EXPECTED’

The CEO’s comments come after the retailer’s stock plummeted by more than 14% in the company’s financial results for the third quarter in June.

Walgreens has been forced to alter its outlook for profits for the year amid a “challenging” time for the pharmaceutical industry and a “worse-than-expected U.S. consumer environment.”

“We continue to face a difficult operating environment, including persistent pressures on the U.S. consumer and the impact of recent marketplace dynamics which have eroded pharmacy margins,” the CEO said in the report.

“Our results and outlook reflect these headwinds.”

FAILED PLANS

In a bid to compete with CVS, Walgreens increased its focus on primary care for patients.

Walgreens announced in October 2021 that it would spend $5.2 billion on primary care provider VillageMD to “remodel itself as a healthcare provider.”

This turnaround will take time, but we are confident it will yield significant financial and consumer benefits over the long term

Tim WentworthCEO of Walgreens

Part of the plan included introducing doctors’ offices to the drugstores.

But in February, Walgreens abruptly shuttered all of its VillageMD clinics in Florida.

Wentworth revealed that Walgreens was minimizing its stake in VillageMD and would no longer be the majority owner.

“We recognize where we are is a turnaround,” Wentworth said in a press release earlier this year.

“We recognize that we need to be focused on what are the parts of the business that we believe are contributing and have a future, and some of those need to change.”

Michael Strahan and Terry Bradshaw break down at ‘craziest’ Fox NFL Sunday segment after Jimmy Johnson error

FOX NFL Sunday descended into chaos this week after Jimmy Johnson made a critical error on the broadcast.

The NFL legend couldn’t remember how to start his segment during the Week 6 iteration of Fox NFL Sunday.

Jimmy Johnson left his cohosts in fits of laughter after messing up the show[/caption]
Fox NFL Sunday
Johnson couldn’t remember which NFL team he was supposed to analyze on the show[/caption]

Week 6 saw a special episode of Fox NFL Sunday, as Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matt Stafford appeared on the program.

Stafford sounded like a natural on the show, and many of the hosts were quick to try showing him that they were the best of the bunch.

Eventually, Johnson attempted to show off his skills but immediately fumbled while leading into the segment.

“Notice how I can completely change and talk about a different team,” Johnson told Stafford.

“Who? Um… New Orleans. No, I’m not going to talk about them.”

The entire cast of the show descended into laughter after Johnson forgot which two teams he was supposed to talk about.

“You forgot!” Howie Long yelled with a laugh.

Terry Bradshaw and Kurt Menefee both buried their heads in their hands as they laughed at the mistake.

Michael Strahan nearly fell to the floor after realizing Johnson’s error.

After a fit of laughter, Johnson finally remembered which teams he was meant to analyze and jumped back into his break down.

“We’re gonna look at the Chargers and the Broncos!” Johnson said.

“You got two offensive head coaches and they’re winning with their defense, bingo!”

The laughter didn’t stop after Johnson finished his segment, and Bradshaw was hysterical as the show attempted to regain composure.

“This is the craziest segment we’ve had in a long time,” Strahan said.

“Fox NFL Sunday just had they funniest segment ever idk how that’s gon go over but that was Hilarious,” one fan said.

London calling

The New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings kick off the NFL's annual run of London fixtures.

New York and Minnesota face off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday October 6 at 2.30pm local time – 9.30am ET for fans back home in America.

It is the first of three straight NFL Sundays that begin with an early game live from London.

The following week, Tottenham also plays host to the Jacksonville Jaguars against the Chicago Bears.

And on October 20, the Jags will head across town to Wembley Stadium to take on the New England Patriots.

“Fox nfl Sunday is toxic lol Stafford was like a new dog to them,” another fan said.

“Don’t change @NFLonFOX#FOXNFLSunday, don’t change!” a third fan said.

Sunday’s episode of the show was one of the better reviewed episodes by fans this season.

The guest appearance by Stafford was a hit as well, and the show could possibly bring in more active players to participate in the show.

Fox NFL Sunday will return next week to break down all of the action ahead of Week 7.

Fears Israel will have to LET terror missiles through air defences amid shortage of interceptors including $2m Arrow 3s

ISRAEL faces a shortage of rocket and missile interceptors vital for its Iron Dome air defence system – meaning terrorist weapons could pierce through.

After a year of war in Gaza and now heavy fighting in Lebanon, Israel’s store of crucial $2million Arrow 3 missiles has taken a heavy hit.

What is the iron dome and how does Israel's aerial defence system ...

The specialist rockets are used to intercept ballistic missiles – fired by terror groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon – at significant distances from the Israeli border.

They form a key part of the $150million Iron Dome defence system which has kept Israel safe from countless onslaughts by air.

Now the country gears up to protect itself from attacks by Iran – potentially in partnership with its ferocious terror proxies.

Industry specialists, former military officials and analysts told The Financial Times that the shortage of interceptor missiles poses a serious threat.

There are concerns that Israel will have to choose which areas it defends if it doesn’t have enough missiles to cover the country.

The US is rushing to help patch up the gaps in Israel’s missile stores – announcing this week that it would be deploy a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) antimissile battery.

If Iran responds to an Israel attack [with a massive air strike campaign], and Hezbollah joins in too, Israel air defences will be stretched

Dana StroulFormer senior US defence official

Dana Stroul, a former senior US defence official specialising in the Middle East, said “Israel’s munitions issue is serious.

“If Iran responds to an Israel attack [with a massive air strike campaign], and Hezbollah joins in too, Israel air defences will be stretched.”

But she warned: “The US can’t continue supplying Ukraine and Israel at the same pace. We are reaching a tipping point.”

Boaz Levy, chief executive of Israel Aerospace Industries, a state-owned firm which produces the Arrow interceptors, said staff are working round the clock.

He said: “Some of our lines are working 24 hours, seven days a week. Our goal is to meet all our obligations.”

While Israel has never fully revealed the size of its interceptor stockpiles, he added: “It is no secret that we need to replenish stocks.”

Israel is widely known for its impressive multi-layered air defence network – made up of the Iron Dome, David’s Sling and the Arrow 2 and 3 systems.

It is designed to intercept rockets that are travelling in the direction of urban areas and bring them down – making it the first system of its kind in the world.

Iron Dome batteries are spread across the country, comprised of three or four launches, each holding 20 interceptor missiles.

The system detects and tracks incoming rickets and fires at those expected to land on populated areas – destroying them with its own ‘Tamir’ missiles estimated to cost some $50,000 each.

David’s Sling can destroy longer-range rockets, cruise missiles and medium or long-range ballistic missiles from up to 300km.

Meanwhile the Arrow systems can defend against medium and long-range ballistic missiles when they are fired from up to 2,400km away.

America’s Thaad battery, designed to shoot down ballistic missiles, will work alongside Israel’s Arrow system.

In the last year Iron Dome has shot down the majority of enemy drones and missiles fired by Iran and its proxies in the Middle East.

Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthi militants in Yemen and various Iraqi militias have fired short and long-range rockets, drones and ballistic missiles towards Israel.

Iran fired hundreds of ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones at the country in April.

The Israeli military claimed that, with the help of the US and other allies and its air defences, it obliterated 99 per cent of them.

But it had less success in the latest Iranian missile attack – over 180 ballistic rockets – on October 1.

Over 30 hit Israel’s Nevatim air base, according to open source intelligence analysts, with one even exploding some 700 metres from Mossad HQ, Israel’s spy agency.

Over 20,000 rockets and missiles have been fired at Israel over the past year from Gaza and Lebanon alone, Israel claims.

Ehud Eilam, a former researcher inside Israel’s Ministry of Defence, said: “During the October 1 attack, there was a sense the IDF reserved some Arrow interceptors in case Iran fired its next salvo at Tel Aviv.

“It’s only a matter of time before Israel starts to run out of interceptors and has to prioritise how they are deployed.”

On Sunday, Hezbollah killed four Israeli soldiers at a military base in the centre of the country in a drone attack.

Assaf Orion, former Israeli general and Israel Defence Forces strategy boss, said: “We are not seeing Hezbollah’s full capability yet.

“It has only been firing at around a tenth of its estimated prewar launching capacity, a few hundred rockets a day instead of as many as 2,000.

“Some of that gap is a choice by Hezbollah not to go full out, and some of it is due to degradation by the IDF . . . But Hezbollah has enough left to mount a strong operation.

“Haifa and northern Israel are still on the receiving end of rocket and drone attacks almost every day.”
