THE Conservative leadership race has collapsed into lurid smears, including that one candidate has a drug problem, top Tories say.
Campaign insiders from multiple leadership teams have told The Sun that in September the contest turned so nasty, some candidates could not even trust their own staff.
The two remaining Conservative Leadership contenders, Robert Jenrick (L) and Kemi Badenoch (R)[/caption]
Badenoch received the most votes in the last ballot[/caption]
Jenrick has made it to the final round[/caption]
One senior aide who worked on a bid alleges their team was infiltrated by a “spy”.
They said: “We had someone join who we eventually discovered was secretly working for another candidate.
“He deliberately sabotaged events and made our campaign look incompetent.
“We found out eventually and kicked him off.”
An insider who worked on a different campaign said their candidate was falsely accused of having a “drug problem”.
They said: “During the leadership race people became, metaphorically, violent.
“Some aides ran around parliament warning MPs that our candidate had a drug problem which is obviously a complete lie.”
The long drawn out race will finally come to a head on November 2, after party members vote to crown either Kemi Badenoch or Robert Jenrick.
Both wannabe leaders will first face two head-to-head debates on GB News and the BBC.
Tory leadership results - fourth round
THE fourth round results:
Kemi Badenoch: 42
Robert Jenrick: 41
James Cleverly: 37
How the contest works:
September 4: First round of Tory MP voting to eliminate one candidate
September 10: Second round of Tory MP voting to eliminate one candidate
September 29 – October 2: Final four candidates make their pitches at Conservative party conference in Birmingham
October 8: Third round of Tory MP voting to eliminate one candidate
October 9: Fourth round of Tory MP voting to eliminate one candidate. The final two go to a vote of the wider party membership.
November 2: New Tory leader announced

BIG Brother fans have been left scratching their heads after one housemate appeared to go ‘missing’ from the show.
Viewers of the ITV reality series were so surprised when he suddenly popped up on screen in the latest episode that they asked: “Who is he?”
Big Brother fans claim one housemate has gone ‘missing’[/caption]
Producers have been accused of editing him out[/caption]
BB bosses have even been accused of deliberately editing out footballer amputee Thomas Atkinson from episodes.
In the latest instalment of Big Brother, which aired on Tuesday night, Thomas barely appeared on screen.
The 20-year-old, who is from Carlisle in Cumbria, finally popped up in the background of the latest task.
He was spotted in close-up twice a few minutes later as the housemates were told the results of the challenge – before disappearing again.
Sharing their confusion on X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan wrote: “Wait who’s Thomas. I swear this is the first time I’ve seen him since the first episode.”
Another added: “Lowkey forgot Thomas even existed until he was on screen then.”
A third penned: “Almost fell off my chair then when Thomas got five seconds of air time, thought he had gone missing.”
And a fourth chimed in: “Literally forgot Thomas was in there until I saw that tiny close up of him.”
Someone else even asked: “Is Thomas still in the house? I’ve heard nothing from him in days.”
Thomas was born without a left hand and was told he would never walk after having his left leg amputated when he was just two.
Despite this prognosis, so far the goalkeeper has earned 26 caps with the The England Amputee men’s team.
Bizarrely, despite slipping under the radar while in the Big Brother house, Thomas claims he is far from quiet.
Ahead of his entrance on the show, he said: “I describe myself as a very energetic, always lively person — I hate silence!”
He added: “One of my bad traits is that I speak a lot. I do a lot of talking without thinking.”
Thomas also insisted: “People are going to see me as that giddy young person.”
Going unnoticed does have its perks, however.
Thomas has escaped nomination from his fellow housemates so will not be evicted during this Friday’s live show.
NHS administrator Martha was put up for eviction in a ‘killer nomination’ by current Head Of House Khaled, while the other three received the most nominations from the group.
