Dad dies from ‘triple E’ horse virus that kills 1 in 3 as experts fear it’s making a ‘startling resurgence’

A DAD has died from ‘triple E’ horse virus half a decade after he was bitten by an infected mosquito in his backyard.

Richard Pawulski, 49, passed away due to complications from eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), which he picked up five years ago.

Richard caught the bug while hile clearing out his backyard in August 2019[/caption]

Known as EEE or ‘triple E’, the virus got its name after first being spotted in horses.

The rare bug kills around a third of those it infects and often leaves survivors severely disabled.

This year, the US faced a large outbreak of the mosquito-borne virus, which led to the death of a man from New York State in August.

The surge in cases promoted curfew measures and warnings across several US states as experts feared the bug was making a resurgence.

So far this year, 16 people have tested positive for the virus, according to the latest CDC data.

It’s believed Richard, who lived in Connecticut, picked up the virus while clearing out his backyard in August 2019.

In the years that followed, he was plagued with several health complications, including brain damage.

“I’m not joking when I say your life can change in the blink of an eye, because that was what happened to us,” Richard’s grieving daughter Amellia Pawulski, 18, told the New York Post.

At first, the dad, originally from Poland, complained of intense headaches and began vomiting yellow bile before he was taken to hospital.

Doctors rushed Richard into emergency surgery to relieve the swelling in his brain, which left him in a coma for two months.

He was eventually diagnosed with EEE, after other cases started to crop up in Connecticut that year.

Amellia and her mother, Margaret were told Richard’s brain damage was extensive and that he would unlikely ever be the same again.

The two ultimately decided to take him off life support, believing it was what he would have wanted – when he suddenly woke up.

For the next five years, Richard bounced around hospitals and nursing homes.

He endured a traumatic brain injury, liver and kidney complications, seizures, and other severe illnesses, along with frequent bouts of pneumonia.

Some days, Richard wasn’t aware of what year it was or where he was, Amellia told the Post.

Everything you need to know about eastern equine encephalitis

Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) is a virus spread to people from the bites of infected mosquitoes.

Although rare, EEE infections can be very serious.

Approximately 30 per cent of people who catch the virus die, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Those who survive may continue to suffer from ongoing neurologic problems, it added.

Initial symptoms tend to show up three to 10 days after a bite from an infected mosquito, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH).

They include:

  • Fever
  • A stiff neck
  • Headache
  • Lack of energy

The virus can cause Inflammation and swelling of the brain, called encephalitis, a complication that can be dangerous.

“The disease gets worse quickly and some patients may go into a coma within a week,” the DPH noted.

According to the CDC and Cleveland Clinic, symptoms of a severe infection that causes brain inflammation may include:

  • Confusion
  • Diarrhoea
  • Drowsiness
  • Headache
  • High fever (higher than 104 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Behavioural changes
  • Seizures

The best way to protect yourself from the disease is to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes.

Use insect repellents and wear long sleeves, long trousers and socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.

Keep mosquitoes out of your house by repairing any holes in your screens and making sure they are tightly attached to all your doors and windows.

Remove areas of standing water around your home.

You can also consider scheduling outdoor events to avoid the hours between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

Fortunately, he was lucid enough in his final days to tell his wife and daughter that he loved them.

Richard passed away on October 14

“None of this stuff would have come up if he didn’t get it[EEE],” Amellia said.

“He always tried to look at the positive,” she added.

“I remember people being like, ‘Oh, how’s your day?’ And he was like, ‘My day is great. I woke up. I can breathe on my own. I can talk on my own. I can go to the bathroom on my own. I have no reason to be upset.’”

The CDC says only a few cases of EEE are reported in the US each year, with most infections found in the eastern and Gulf Coast states.

Outbreaks of EEE usually occur in Massachusetts every 10 years and typically last two to three years.

Philip Armstrong, chief scientist at the Center for Vector Biology & Zoonotic Diseases at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, said the clusters this year are cause for vigilance.

“This is one of the more active years,” he told Stateline.

“I would say, about every four or five years, we see these sort of regional outbreaks that occur.”

In a 2019 outbreak, there were six deaths among 12 confirmed cases in Massachusetts.

The outbreak continued the following year with five more cases and another death.

Symptoms of EEE include fever, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea and seizures.

People who survive are often permanently disabled, and few completely recover, Massachusetts authorities said.

The disease is prevalent in birds, and although humans and some other mammals can catch EEE, they don’t spread the disease.

Cancer diagnoses hit an all-time high – as the NHS reveals the most common types of the disease

PROSTATE cancer diagnosis surged by a quarter in 2022 thanks to a Covid catch-up campaign as the total for all types of tumours hit a record high.

The latest NHS figures for England show there were 346,217 cancers diagnosed, up by five per cent from the previous year.

Cancer accounts for about one in four deaths in the UK (stock image of a cancer cell)[/caption]

Prostate cancers were the most common type, with almost 55,000 cases.

Health chiefs said more people have come forward for prostate testing in particular, due to campaigns and attempts to catch up the Covid backlog.

Breast cancer remained the most common type in women and bowel and lung cancers were also in the main four.

Amy Rylance, of Prostate Cancer UK, said: “There was a huge drop in men getting tested for prostate cancer and being referred for treatment during the Covid pandemic.

“By early 2022 there were over 14,000 men missing a prostate cancer diagnosis.

“We launched a major campaign with the NHS in 2022 to find these ‘missing men’ and this data confirms the effectiveness of that campaign.”

Cases up but death rates down

Men were diagnosed with more cancers than women, with 181,000 compared to 168,000.

Despite increases in the number of cases, death rates have fallen – showing improvements in diagnosis and treatment.

The male death rate was 299 per 100,000 people, compared to 345 per 100,000 in 2011.

The female death rate was 212 per 100,000, down from 237.

Cancer kills about one in four people in the UK, making it the top cause of death.

NHS cancer director Cally Palmer said: “This data shows the NHS is diagnosing more cancers than ever before.

“Our work to raise awareness, target those at risk and encourage people to come forward for checks is leading to more people starting treatment promptly – potentially saving lives.

“We know that some people are still waiting too long and there is more to do to ensure all patients receive high-quality and timely care.”

Tragic death

Last night shockwaves spread throughout the world as news broke that Liam has died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.

Liam died instantly from multiple injuries including a fractured skull caused by his fall.

Buenos Aires emergency services chief Alberto Crescenti said medical teams were unable to save the former One Direction heart-throb when they reached the scene.

Inside Liam Payne and Cheryl's romance

By Joanne Kavanagh

IT was a romance that caused a media storm.

One Direction hunk Liam Payne was only 14 when he met former X Factor judge Cheryl during the show in 2008.

But it wasn’t until 2016 – when the Girls Aloud singer was divorcing her second husband – that the pair got together despite their ten-year age gap.

The couple made their relationship official in May of that year when they appeared at Eva Longoria’s Global Gift Gala in Paris.

In 2017, Liam paid a sweet tribute to his girlfriend by getting a tattoo of her eye on his arm.

Cheryl was pregnant at the time and gave birth to a boy on March 22, 2017.

She posted a picture on Instagram of Liam cradling their 7lb 9oz baby captioned: “On Wednesday Liam and I became parents to an incredibly beautiful, healthy baby boy looking like a dream.”

One pal told The Sun: “Liam didn’t leave Cheryl’s side throughout the birth, and like her, he is besotted with their new son and can’t wait to take him home.

“This is the perfect Mother’s Day for Cheryl.”

The Sun revealed in May 2017 that the couple named their son Bear.

They decided on the unusual name after spending a week getting to know him.

In February 2018, The Sun broke the news that Liam’s constant travelling to promote his solo career had placed a huge strain on the relationship, and the pair were ready to split.

That same month, Cheryl said “none of it matters” as she shrugged off questions about her crumbling romance with Liam during a BBC Breakfast interview.

They then put on a united front together at the Brit Awards where they smiled on the red carpet and Cheryl joked about the couple’s ‘safe word’.

However, by July 2018, Cheryl and Liam made the decision to split.

A pal told The Sun: “Cheryl and Liam worked really hard on their relationship – they had troubles earlier this year and were able to get through them.

“But they’re in different stages of their lives and, after a lot of careful thought, came to a decision that it’s best for everyone if they do go their separate ways.”

Liam and Cheryl released a statement confirming their break-up which read: “We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It’s been a tough decision for us to make.

“We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together.”

It comes as:

According to police in Buenos Aires, officers were initially responding to reports “of an aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol”.

Pictures showed shocked fans gathering outside the hotel after police cordoned off the area, with forensic investigators in white protective suits and blue gloves seen entering and leaving.

Fans were photographed lighting candles and leaving flowers at the side of the road in an impromptu vigil as they paid tribute to the music star.

Liam and Simon’s friendship

Liam previously spoke of his relationship with music mogul Simon and claimed that Simon had created the boy band around him.

He said he “started with my face, and then worked around the rest. I was the honorary member of One Direction. He told me that story himself at his house.”

He also recalled how Simon played a part in his romanced with Cheryl, which led to them having a son called Bear.

“I went to Simon’s house, and made a joke about how hot Cheryl was,” he explained.

“Simon was like, “I know who’s going to be the next Mrs Payne!””

Liam continued: “Then I was in a bar and Niall came in and told me that Cheryl liked me.”

“I was like “Cheryl? Cheryl?” Niall was in Simon’s dressing room, Simon said my name, she went red and left.”

“So I hit her up.”

Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson: UK start time, ring-walks, live stream, TV channel, full card for massive fight

MIKE TYSON will return to the ring for the first time since 2020 to face internet sensation Jake Paul next month.

The Problem Child overcame Ryan Bourland with a brutal first round knockout in back March – but he faces a completely different challenge in ‘Iron Mike’ next.

Jake Paul will take on Mike Tyson at a new date[/caption]

Paul has won all three of his fights since losing to Tommy Fury a year-and-a-half ago.

Tyson, 58, returns to the ring in controversial circumstances, with many of the opinion the boxing legend shouldn’t fighting again.

Tyson’s last bout came in an exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr in 2020, of which Paul was on the undercard against former NBA player Nate Robinson.

When is Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson?

  • Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson has been rescheduled for Friday, November 15.
  • The fight was originally set for July 20 – but was moved back after Tyson’s health issues.
  • The bout will be hosted at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Why has Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson been postponed?

Mike Tyson’s health issues forced him to put his training on hold.

The former world champion suffered a medical emergency on board a flight in May as a result of an ulcer flare up.

Netflix, who were set to show the fight, released a statement announcing the cancellation.

It reads: “Unfortunately Jake Paul and Mike Tyson will not face-off on July 20 as planned. Tyson’s recent ulcer flare up has limited his ability to train fully for the next few weeks.

“The fight will be rescheduled for a date later this year after Mike’s able to resume training with no limitations and both fighters can have equal time to prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime matchup!”

Tyson required medical assistance from paramedics on board a flight from Miami to LA.

He felt nauseous and dizzy though his publicist said he was feeling “very good” after treatment.

What TV channel is Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson on and can it be live streamed?

  • Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson will be broadcast exclusively on Netflix.
  • It will be the streaming giant’s first venture into combat sports.
  • Jake Paul confirmed on X that the bout with Mike Tyson will be available to all Netflix subscribers at no additional cost.

What’s been said?

On the announcement of the huge fight, Paul said: “It’s crazy to think that in my second pro fight, I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson’s undercard.

“Now, less than four years later, I’m stepping up to face Tyson myself to see if I have what it takes to beat one of boxing’s most notorious fighters and biggest icons.

“Within just two and a half years of founding MVP, we’re about to produce the biggest fight in history, a fight in the biggest NFL stadium in the US, broadcast live, on the biggest streaming platform in the world – a testament to all we’ve accomplished in such a short amount of time.

“Whether you’re tuning in on Netflix or showing out in person, whether you’re team Paul or team Tyson, or whether you’re a lifelong boxing fan or watching your first fight, you’re not going to want to miss this event.”

Mike Tyson has also spoken about the fight with Paul on July 20, he said: “I started him on his boxing journey on the undercard of my fight with Roy Jones Jr and now I plan to finish him.”

My appointment side hustle makes me over $5k a month – you can make your own hours and never leave your room

A UNIQUE part-time gig could help you make thousands of dollars extra each month.

The side hustle is flexible and requires barely any work to get started.

TikTok/ livaubs
Remote work expert Olivia (@livaubs) has revealed a lucrative digital side hustle[/caption]
Getty
It only requires your phone and a laptop to be effective (stock image)[/caption]

Best of all, you can decide your hours and never even have to leave your room to do it, according to a recent video from TikToker and remote work expert, Olivia (@livaubs).

“You can be any age to do this and work anywhere you want,” Olivia emphasized.

All you need is a phone and a laptop from wherever you are.

Olivia explained that the gig was for an “appointment setter” or a digital sales assistant.

The appointment setter is crucial in connecting business owners or influencers with clients to sell products to consumers.

“There’s a ton of business owners or influencers who sell their digital products for thousands of dollars,” Olivia noted.

“These business owners are always getting a ton of people inquiring about and who are interested in the product.”

The TikToker continued that the appointment setter’s job is to reach out to those clients inquiring about the business and set up a call between them and the business’s sales team.

From there, the closer on the sales team ideally makes a deal with the client, and the appointment setter gets paid for making the connection.

PROFIT POTENTIAL

Olivia gave an example of the sales team trying to get the client to purchase a $5,000 course.

Given that appointment setters typically earn a five percent commission for their efforts, you’d walk away with $250.

The TikToker emphasized that if you scaled that, setting up only one appointment per day for 30 days, you’d make well over $5,000 per month.

Considering a month is either 30 or 31 days, if you set an appointment for a product or service worth $5,000 each time and earned the 5% commission, it would be over $7,500 commission.

Still, that’s unlikely as there are variables to consider, including if the closer is successful each time and the worth of the service.

Side hustles and tax implications

Extra income you make from side hustles may need to be reported to the IRS.

If you receive more than $600 in gross payouts from a selling platform like eBay, the site will issue you a Form 1099-K to use in your tax return.

Individuals should calculate their adjusted gross income, taxable earnings, and deductions for the year.

Once they have that, they can use the 1040-ES form to calculate estimated taxes.

Getting started with the appointment setter gig is arguably the most difficult aspect.

Some companies or influencers might want to see that you have a business or sales background.

Although it’s not required, if you do enough research and show them a developed script as to what you’d say to highlight the product or service, practice, and market yourself effectively, you’ll be able to connect consistently.

You offer your connection services and charge a fee.

MONEY MOVES

If the appointment setter gig sounds too complicated, there are still several other ways to make some serious money each month.

A simple “signature” side hustle could make you $900 daily without doing any real work as a mobile notary.

Sharing your opinion through marketing studies could also make you “$60 richer” in just 20 minutes.

It’s even possible to make around $700 a day transcribing audio through a little-known gig.

Dog lovers could also make around $600 daily with a babysitting and walking business.

Bed Bath & Beyond gets new life as brand comes back to stores – but you’ll need to spot a different name

BED Bath & Beyond looks set for an eagerly-awaited return, but customers will need to keep their eyes peeled for a different name.

The popular retailer notably filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2023.

AFP
Bed Bath & Beyond products will return to store shelves[/caption]

Since 2004, Bed Bath & Beyond spent about $11.8 billion to buy back its shares but was left with considerable debts doing so, among other moves that left it unable to recover.

The insurmountable debt, along with high inflation rates, rising interest costs, and supply chain interruptions during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, was cited as some of the reasons Bed Bath & Beyond finally reached for a Chapter 11 filing, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The popular chain’s items will now reportedly appear on shelves at rival Texas-based chain The Container Store, according to CNN.

Beyond Inc., which dragged Bed Bath & Beyond out of bankruptcy, is also pumping $40 million into The Container Store, who have also had financial woes.

The deal aims to revitalize the former, which has seen sales plummet at its 102 stores across the US.

The partnership aims to ‘improve customer experience utilizing both the iconic’ Bed Bath & Beyond and the Container Store names, a joint press release said.

The items sold at the stores will be co-branded, the release added.

Marcus Lemonis, executive chairman of Beyond Inc, stressed that the Bed Bath & Beyond assortment would be “affordable” for customers.

“We’re thrilled to bring the beloved Bed Bath & Beyond brand back to life in this new and exciting way,” Lemonis said in the release.

“Through affordable, quality goods that will soon be on retail shelves — both physical and online — we’re reinvigorating the brand and returning to its core.”

“The Bed Bath & Beyond brand is both aspirational and attainable, and our brand will continue to reflect these values,” he added.

Beyond Inc said it would also be working on licensing agreements for Bed Bath & Beyond stores in Mexico and other international markets.

BRING IT BACK

The news is music to the ears of some customers, as they begged for the Bed Bath & Beyond brand to return once more.

“Bed Bath & Beyond is coming back from the retail death kind of,” a customer wrote in a post on Facebook about Beyond Inc’s update.

“I’ll believe it when I see it,” a skeptical shopper added.

“I miss this store!!” exclaimed another.

How does bankruptcy work?

Bankruptcy is a specific legal process that helps companies eliminate debt they can't repay.

The process allows businesses to start fresh and gain access to new credit.

Supervised by federal courts, bankruptcies allow a company to sell off its assets more easily to pay off creditors, according to Investopedia.

Chapter 11, a common process for companies, is used to restructure a business with the goal of remaining open – even if it means selling off most of the company’s properties.

Chapter 7, on the other hand, sells all of a company’s assets, putting it out of business.

Chapter 15, alternatively, allows for collaboration between American and foreign courts to conduct bankruptcy proceedings with “parties of interest involving more than one country,” per the United States Courts.

“Make it like the 90s and 2000s,” another demanded.

LAST-MINUTE SAVE

As The U.S. Sun previously reported, Bed Bath & Beyond officially filed for Chapter 11 in April 2023.

Throughout the summer and into the fall, the retailer closed well over 187 remaining locations — shutting down its in-person store locations for good.

Overstock’s acquisition converted the brand to an online-only seller.

Bed Bath & Beyond had spent $11.8billion since 2004 to try and purchase its shares back.

It still had considerable debts by the time it filed for bankruptcy.

The company and several others have pointed to high inflation rates, rising interest, and supply chain interruptions as culprits for needing to reach for a Chapter 11 filing, per The Wall Street Journal.
