Patrick Surtain II injury update as Denver Broncos star suffers brain injury similar to Tua Tagovailoa in Chargers loss

THE Denver Broncos revealed an injury update concerning star cornerback Patrick Surtain II.

The two-time NFL Pro Bowler, 24, suffered a head injury during the Denver Broncos’ Week 6 23-16 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Denver head coach Sean Payton shared that Surtain has entered the league’s concussion protocol.

The former first-round pick has a brain injury similar to the one Miami Dolphins star Tua Tagovailoa had dealt with.

Payton spoke to reporters about the absence of Surtain in the losing effort.

“Anytime you lose one of your top players, it is kind of the next man up and here we go,” he said the game.

“Not having had a chance to look at film to tell you how the other guys played, I know we struggled just getting off the field defensively on third down.

“We did not do a number of things well today.

“That is kind of where it is at.”

Surtain suffered a concussion on the first play from scrimmage.

The Alabama product’s head hit the turf after breaking up a pass.

Surtain was sent to the locker room and was eventually ruled out.

His absence proved costly for the Broncos’ defense which allowed 350 total yards and 11-of-18 third-down conversions.

Denver didn’t record a turnover and was on the field for 37 minutes in the defeat.

The Broncos will have the task of facing the New Orleans Saints on Thursday Night Football in Week 7.

Surtain has been ruled out for the contest.

Fortunately, he is reportedly “in good spirits” to play for Denver’s Week 8 home game against the Carolina Panthers.

‘It’s a disgrace’ – Frank Warren responds to Fabio Wardley ‘tainted gloves’ row

FURIOUS Frank Warren has slammed accusations Fabio Wardley shattered Frazer Clarke’s face with dodgy gloves.

Clarke, 33, needed emergency Saudi Arabian surgery to rewire his smashed jaw following a brutal first round KO defeat in Saturday’s British and Commonwealth heavyweight title rematch.

Shalom believes Wardley’s gloves are being investigated[/caption]

His promoter Ben Shalom claims Wardley’s customised 10oz Fly gloves are being investigated after British Boxing Board of Control’s medical chief Neil Scott likened Clarke’s injury to being hit with a BRICK.

Shalom said: “A doctor told me there’s no way in hell any boxing glove should be able to inflict that level of damage.

“It’s an ongoing process, something we are looking at, to see how these customised gloves are different.

“We were warned repeatedly by Frazer’s team about what gloves could be used.”

However, Warren, 72, stormed: “Frazer was a gentleman all week and has praised Fabio’s brilliant performance.

“The only person who has mentioned any suggestion of impropriety is Ben.

“It’s a disgrace Shalom has tried to tarnish Fabio’s win and reputation with such a dangerous suggestion.

“The British Boxing Board of Control checks and approves all gloves at the Friday meeting – which is filmed these days – and no issues were raised.

“I will be taking Shalom to the Board for bringing the sport into disrepute with this libellous allegation and questioning the integrity of the Board and everybody involved in the Riyadh show.

Warren’s ruthless reply was to comments Shalom had given to the Sportsman Boxing youtube channel, claiming: “There was a lot of talk during the week as to the gloves that were being worn by Fabio Wardley.

A spokesperson for the BBBofC told SunSport: “There is no investigation. The gloves were approved.”

Full Moon calendar: When is the next one?

STARGAZERS get to see a Full Moon roughly every 29.5 days – that’s the time it takes to complete one lunar phase cycle.

A Full Moon is visible when it’s on the opposite side of the Earth to the Sun.

a full moon with a rocket in the foreground
This year we can expect 12 Full Moons and four Super Moons
Getty

And that means it’s when skywatchers on the ground can see the Moon at its best and brightest.

When is the next Full Moon?

You’ll get the opportunity to see a Full Moon regularly throughout the year.

They arrive roughly every 29.5 days, which means you end up with about 12 Full Moons every calendar year.

With the usual pattern of about once every 29.5 days, Earth sees around 12 Full Moon’s each year.

But on some years, a 13th is squeezed in. That happened in 2023, but not in 2024.

Each Full Moon is given a special name.

Here’s the dates to look out for in 2024:

  • January 25 – Wolf Moon
  • February 24 – Snow Moon
  • March 25 – Worm Moon
  • April 23 – Pink Moon
  • May 23 – Flower Moon
  • June 21 – Strawberry Moon
  • July 21 – Buck Moon
  • August 19 – Sturgeon Moon
  • September 17 – Harvest Moon / Corn Moon
  • October 17 – Hunter’s Moon
  • November 15 – Beaver Moon
  • December 15 – Cold Moon

Four of this year’s moons are classed as Super Moons, because they appear even bigger in the night sky.

They’re a great opportunity to see the Moon at its very best.

The 2024 Super Moons are:

  • August 19
  • September 17
  • October 17
  • November 15

When is the best time to see a Full Moon?

As with any Moon, the best time is at night.

An area with little light pollution from the ground makes it even better.

And be sure to check the weather forecast so no pesky clouds block your view.

The Moon – our closest neighbour explained

Here's what you need to know...

  • The Moon is a natural satellite – a space-faring body that orbits a planet
  • It’s Earth’s only natural satellite, and is the fifth biggest in the Solar System
  • The Moon measures 2,158 miles across, roughly 0.27 times the diameter of Earth
  • Temperatures on the Moon range from minus 173 degrees Celcius to 260 degrees Celcius
  • Experts assumed the Moon was another planet, until Nicolaus Copernicus outlined his theory about our Solar System in 1543
  • It was eventually assigned to a “class” after Galileo discovered four moons orbiting Jupiter in 1610
  • The Moon is believed to have formed around 4.51billion years ago
  • The strength of its gravitational field is about a sixth of Earth’s gravity
  • Earth and the Moon have “synchronous rotation”, which means we always see the same side of the Moon – hence the phrase “dark side of the Moon”
  • The Moon’s surface is actually dark, but appears bright in the sky due to its reflective ground
  • During a solar eclipse, the Moon covers the Sun almost completely. Both objects appear a similar size in the sky because the Sun is both 400 times larger and farther
  • The first spacecraft to reach the Moon was in 1959, as part of the Soviet Union’s Lunar program
  • The first manned orbital mission was Nasa’s Apollo 8 in 1968
  • And the first manned lunar landing was in 1969, as part of the Apollo 11 mission

What is a Super Moon?

A Super Moon is relatively rare, occurring just a few times a year.

It happens because of a combination of two different astronomical effects.

This is when a new or Full Moon coincides with the moon’s closet point to Earth in its monthly orbit (known officially as perigee).

A Moon has to come within 90 per cent of its closest approach to Earth to be formally defined as a super moon.

Liam Payne was ruthlessly gobbled up and spat out by the music industry – his death has united the whole country

Liam’s pain

THERE are times when the death of a star unites the whole country in disbelief and grief.

The passing of Liam Payne at just 31 is one such terrible moment.

The death of Liam Payne at just 31 unites the whole country in disbelief and grief[/caption]

That shock will have been felt in millions of households yesterday, such was the seismic fame of his band One Direction.

Not since The Beatles had a British group garnered such global fandom.

Their enormous appeal to a generation of young fans is the reason a talented but ordinary lad from Wolverhampton is being mourned worldwide.

But that notoriety also brought troubled Liam a level of stardom with which he ultimately struggled to cope.

Thrust together on X Factor, he and his four bandmates were the first pop megastars to be flung into the bile-filled cauldron of social media.

Everything he did — from going solo to fathering a child — was subject to both adoration and blistering criticism.

Unsurprising, then, that he struggled mentally as his personal relationships floundered and the music industry, which at first so greedily gobbled him up, ruthlessly spat him out again.

What a tragedy.

Clueless

SCRAPPING the Rwanda scheme looks more dumb by the day.

Yesterday the Dutch government revealed it may send Africans who enter illegally to Uganda.

Yet at the very moment that our European neighbours are rightly getting tough, post-Brexit Britain has suddenly gone soft.

By scrapping Rwanda without an alternative the Government has recklessly boxed itself into a corner.

Amnesty will now be granted to 62,000 illegal migrants — equivalent to a town the size of Margate or Kettering.

And as the Chancellor prepares a punishing Budget to fill a £22billion “black hole” in the nation’s finances, another £4million PER DAY will be spent on hotel accommodation.

But as the problem becomes more urgent — and vastly more expensive — the Government still has no answers.

Sin bagged

WHAT a stunning blow Israel has inflicted on Hamas.

Cowardly leader Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind of the sickening mass murdera of October 7, has faced the justice he so richly deserved.

Wiping out the fugitive Hamas leader — who had been hiding in a tunnel packed with luxuries and food denied to his starving people — also shows Israel’s mission to rid the Middle East of jihadi terrorism must be allowed to succeed.

Britain and its allies must not falter in their support.

Beterbiev and Bivol were so good they could have fought without a referee – the epic fight was just what boxing needed

BOXING owes a massive debt of gratitude to Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, for giving us a fight in Riyadh last weekend that will live. long in the memory.

The pair of them provided a masterclass of attacking and defensive skills that brought nobility to the Noble Art.

Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol put on a show that displayed just how good boxing can be at its best[/caption]

They went into battle as unbeaten warriors and the prize to the winner was to be acclaimed the undisputed world light-heavyweight champion.

It was the kind of even match-up that is made in heaven and every fan on the planet had been looking forward to it for months with expert opinion divided as to who would come out on top.

The week-long build-up was extremely low key — it was unmistakable the two Russians had enormous respect for each other and weren’t interested in getting involved in pretending there was a grudge.

It was amusing to see the various TV interviewers desperately trying — but failing miserably — to get Beterbiev and Bivol to trash-talk and bad-mouth each other.

Very often the anticipation of such a consummate contest ends up being a bitterly disappointing anti-climax — the long-awaited Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao clash nine years ago is a classic example.

But within seconds of the opening bell such fears were knocked out as it became clear this would be extra special.

For 12 rounds the action ebbed and flowed non-stop between two proud, elite fighters calling on all their remarkable resources as they strived for supremacy.

As accurate hooks and jabs landed, Beterbiev and Bivol took their punishment without flinching.

CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERS

There was hardly a clinch and I certainly didn’t see a single foul blow throughout the 36 minutes — in fact American referee Thomas Taylor didn’t need to be there as he had absolutely nothing to do.

It wasn’t the kind of brutal fight that had you gasping for breath — hardly a drop of blood was shed and there were no knockdowns.

But it was so tantalisingly close and absorbing and the skill levels were so high. It must have had most people purring.

At the end nobody could be sure whose hand was going to be raised in triumph — there was bound to be controversy whoever got it.

From my armchair view I thought, because of his grandstand finish in the last two rounds, Beterbiev just about earned his majority decision.

But both men gave their fellow pros a lesson in how to conduct themselves in victory and defeat — no histrionics from either.

Inevitably, Eddie Hearn — Bivol’s promoter — screamed his man was robbed as words like ‘disgusting’ and ‘disgraceful’ tripped off his tongue.

Hearn, at that time, didn’t know what Dmitry had said before he left the ring — when his disappointment must have been at its height.

There was no Bivol bellyaching, on the contrary, as he said of the decision: “It’s just the opinion of the judges. I just say congratulations to Artur and his team, he deserves it. No problem.”

How refreshing in this modern, money-mad world that boxing sportsmanship of the highest quality can still prevail.

Beterbiev is a man of integrity and there’s every hope he will do the honourable thing and give Bivol the rematch he richly deserves.

I’m sure I’m not alone in wanting to see them fight again.

Liam’s autopsy revealed the star suffered severe injuries that led to “internal and external haemorrhaging”.

Today his One Direction friend poured his heart out about the singer’s untimely death.

Posting on Instagram he said: “I am beyond devastated to be writing this but yesterday I lost a brother. Liam was somebody I looked up to everyday, such a positive, funny, and kind soul.

“I first met Liam when he was 16 and I was 18, I was instantly amazed by his voice but more importantly as time went on I got a chance to see the kind brother I’d longed all my life for.

“Liam was an incredible song writer with a great sense of melody, we often spoke of getting back in the studio together to try and recreate the writing chemistry we had built up in the band.

“And for the record, Liam was in my opinion the most vital part of One Direction. His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing. The list goes on. Thank you for shaping us Liam.

“A message to you Liam if you’re listening.

“I feel beyond lucky to have had you in my life but I’m really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye.

“I’m so grateful that we got even closer since the band, speaking on the phone for hours, reminiscing about all the thousands of amazing memories we had together is a luxury I thought I’d have with you for life.

“I would have loved to share the stage with you again but it wasn’t to be.

“I want you to know that if Bear ever needs me I will be the Uncle he needs in his life and tell him stories of how amazing his dad was.

“I wish I got chance to say goodbye and tell you one more time how much I loved you.

“Payno, my boy, one of my best friends, my brother, I love you mate. Sleep well X”

It comes as Liam’s family issued a statement, which read: “We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul.

“We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.”

Meanwhile, this afternoon harrowing pictures emerged that show inside Liam’s hotel room shortly after his fatal fall.

Argentine media have published troubling images showing white powder, burnt aluminium foil and a smashed TV screen.

Several images show what is reported to be the inside of the former One Direction singer’s luxury suite at the upmarket Hotel CasaSur Palermo, according to Argentina’s biggest newspaper Clarin.

Buenos Aires police confirmed the room was in a state of “total disorder”.

They released a statement saying: “Upon entering, total disorder was observed, with various elements broken.

“The balcony area was inspected in order to establish access to it.”

Clarin, Argentina’s biggest newspaper, published the images alongside a report saying: “Damage and drugs in the hotel room Liam Payne was staying in in Buenos Aires.”

The singer had been open about his battles with addiction in the past.

But cops are yet to confirm what the substances found in the room are and are due to run tests on them shortly.

It comes as:

final 911 call from hotel staff on Wednesday revealed they needed “urgent assistance” from cops to help with a guest “behaving erratically”.

Argentinian police said staff reported an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol”.

Witnesses at the hotel reported Liam had to be carried back to his room, according to TMZ.

Recordings from the 911 calls made by the head of reception show them reporting “a guest who is destroying everything in his room”.

In a second appeal for help the receptionist said: “We need you to send someone urgently because I don’t know if the guest’s life is in danger.

“They must be in a room that has a balcony. And well, we’re a little bit worried he’ll do something, that he’ll put his life at risk.”

Liam was found dead in the hotel’s inner courtyard at around 5pm local time (9pm UK time).

His death was confirmed as soon as ambulance crews arrived.

A red tent was put up over Liam’s body as cops began to investigate the death.

A post-mortem is expected to be completed soon.

The singer was in Buenos Aires for a holiday after going to see pal Niall Horan’s tour.

He had arrived on September 30 with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy.

Weeping fans crowded outside the hotel holding a candlelit vigil overnight in honour of the beloved singer.

Liam leaves behind his seven-year-old son Bear whom he shared with Cheryl Cole after the pair met when Liam was on the X Factor.

Major security fears LA Rams playbook will be leaked after star has playbook stolen from car leading to investigation

THE Los Angeles Rams had a team playbook stolen from a player’s car.

Offensive lineman Conor McDermott had his team-issued iPad stolen from his car this week.

The playbook was stored on a team-issued iPad[/caption]

The iPad has the Rams‘ playbook loaded on it, and was stolen from McDermott’s parked car.

He was parked in a residential area and local law enforcement are currently investigating the theft.

No arrests have been made in relation to the break-in, according to TMZ.

Fortunately for the Rams, there is no way for the person who stole the iPad to access the team’s playbook. The team can remotely wipe the memory from the device.

There is no indication that any opposing NFL team tried to steal the iPad either.

Even if an opposing team tried to steal the device, they might not have gotten much off of it.

First of all, McDermott has not been actively playing with the Rams as he is currently on injured reserve.

Also, the Rams have not called up many impressive plays, as they currently sit at 1-4 on the season.

They have the second-worst record in the NFC, only better than the struggling Carolina Panthers.

NFL fans had jokes for the Rams and their poor record after the playbook was stolen.

“All the plays in the wind,” one fan said.

“1-4 Not too worried,” another fan said.

“Radiers. Smh,” a third fan said.

“Stolen near LA shocking,” a fourth fan said.

“Cut him,” a fifth fan said.

London calling

The New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings kick off the NFL's annual run of London fixtures.

New York and Minnesota face off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday October 6 at 2.30pm local time – 9.30am ET for fans back home in America.

It is the first of three straight NFL Sundays that begin with an early game live from London.

The following week, Tottenham also plays host to the Jacksonville Jaguars against the Chicago Bears.

And on October 20, the Jags will head across town to Wembley Stadium to take on the New England Patriots.

McDermott is a seven-year NFL veteran, having experience with multiple teams.

He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills.

The lineman spent two years in Buffalo before moving on to play with the New York Jets.

After three years with the Jets he spent another two years with the New England Patriots.

McDermott has yet to play a game with the Rams this year after getting injured.
