Rachel Reeves must pull out all the stops to give hospitality trade some help in Budget

Spirit-raiser

THERE may be precious few reasons to raise a glass when Chancellor Rachel Reeves unveils her Budget next week.

But she could lift spirits by pulling out all the stops to give the hospitality trade some help.

After brutal years of Covid, a near-recession and the wholly unnecessary threat of banning smoking outside, pubs and restaurants in the UK are already on the brink of bankruptcy.

But they now face another collective £1billion hit.

Failing to extend their 75 per cent business rate discount — due to end in April — would be a fatal mistake by the Chancellor.

It would decimate already-fragile takings and put thousands of jobs at risk.

Ms Reeves would do well to maintain that protection and by doing so throw a lifeline to an industry vital to so many in our depressed communities.

It could also give her something she so desperately needs — some economic growth.

French fiasco

LAST week another 979 migrants arrived illegally in Britain on 16 new boats.

They will join the big-city-sized group of asylum-seekers now being housed in hotels at a cost of £4million per day before most are inevitably allowed to live here permanently.

Among those trying to cross this weekend was a baby boy who drowned after falling overboard as his dinghy sank.

“He slipped out of my hands,” says his shattered father.

Families desperate to get to Britain are still prepared to ignore the obvious dangers.

Which is why these journeys must be stopped before boats even leave the beaches.

In Belgium police are doing just that.

Only one boat has arrived in Britain from there this year.

In neighbouring France — handed £500million by Britain to tackle the problem — cops stand and watch as the migrants gamble with their lives.

What are we paying them for?

Sir Chris’s grit

IT is scarcely believable that a man with such superhuman strength and fitness as Sir Chris Hoy should be struck by terminal cancer.

Sir Chris conquered all his rivals in the Olympic velodrome.

It must have been a crushing blow to this born winner to be told he can never beat his illness.

Yet his courage — and that of his wife Sarra, now diagnosed with MS — remains undimmed.

We salute his bravery as he now no doubt proves a huge inspiration to all those affected by this cruel disease.

Lily was seen screaming ahead of the eviction

In footage shown on ITV tonight, Emma was seen making a series of scathing remarks about Lily ahead of Friday night’s eviction.

Lily could be seen screaming and “eeking” around the sofa area as Emma got more and more wound up.

Turning to fellow housemate Thomas, Emma seethed that she was hoping it would be Lily that got the chop.

Speaking out loud, she could be heard saying under her breath: “Please evict her!”

As Daze was ultimately axed from the house, Emma could be seen rolling her eyes at the thought of continuing to having to live with Lily.

In another shock comment, Emma could be heard saying in reference to Lily: “Shut up before I strangle you.”

As the shock feud was revealed, Emma could be heard moaning about Lily and her antics to other housemates as she admitted she was growing tired of her constant loud noises.

As news of the eviction settled in, Emma took herself off to have a chat with Big Brother where she made Lily the target of her words once again.

She confessed she wanted her dumped over Daze in order for the house to find some peace.

Unleashing another rant at her, she put Lily on blast as she ‘wished’ an illness upon her.

Emma said: “I hope she gets a doze of laryngitis for a few weeks.

“Then I might warm to her.”

Although the ‘feud’ appears to be new, it could have been bubbling for a few weeks after Emma said upon entering the house that she hoped she would be “bound and gagged” in order to keep her quiet.

On Friday night, Daze was banished from the ITV2 house after the public vote.

The remaining Housemates comforted each other, but two of them took that to a whole new level.

Baked Potato (Rosie) and Nathan have been growing closer in recent days, and shared a three-way kiss with Lily.

But tonight, the lovebirds were seen sharing a snog on their own, but not before staring at each other for an awkwardly long period of time.

They finally broke eye contact to lock lips on the sofa while no-one else was around, but the moment left many Big Brother fans horrified.

Taking to X – formerly Twitter – one wrote: “Genuinely feel sick watching that kiss. It felt soooo forced as if they were forced to.”

Another added: “That kiss was absolutely rancid, truly evil personified.”

A third commented: “Baked potatoes has kissed Nathan which genuinely disgusts me and probably increase his chance of being in the final of this season of big brother like last year.”

Meanwhile a fourth tweeted: “This kiss seems soooo forced. They really do have 0 chemistry.”

Rosie is called ‘Baked Potato’ after she completed a series of dares, one of which included changing her name.

Others took issue with the fact that Nathan had cold sores when he kissed Baked Potato.

One wrote: “I cant believe she kissed him with those sores on his lips, i feel sick.”

Another commented: “Nathan has a massive cold sore and he kissed Baked Potato. Christ.”

A third shared: “Baked Potato kissed that square head with a big ole COLDSORE on his lip!!!! Nasty work.”

Big Brother airs on ITV2 and is available on ITVX.

The midfielder dedicated his first goal of the season to his newborn daughter Giselle Delilah Jones and girlfriend Saffie Khan.

The couple made headlines with the joyous announcement in May that they are expecting their first child, with Saffie giving birth last week.

The pair shared photos of them holding their baby as they beamed with joy.

The ex-England youth international spoke to Sky Sports about his incredible performance against Chelsea and hinted it was a result of some extra confidence he acquired the last few days.

Jones said: “It’s the best thing ever, I’m playing with a smile on my face. It’s a different type of joy.

“I was in the spare room [last night]! But she’s a little dream, she wants a feed and change and back asleep.

“So I wouldn’t have missed much sleep anyway. But I thought it was wise [to sleep in the spare room]. So I had some energy. Sorry dads around the world!”

Social media went wild after the Liverpool ace’s heartwarming statement with many praising his inspirational words.

One tweeted: “Loved that Curtis Jones interview.”

Another commented: “That Curtis jones interview was f*****g mega! What a boy man, been a dad for a week and scores the winning goal and MOTM, killing it.”

A third wrote: “Curtis Jones genuinely seems like a top bloke. Doesn’t interview like he’s reading from a script and seems like a lad who’s just buzzing on life. Fair play to him!

This one said: “What a brilliant interview with Curtis Jones that was.”

That one stated: “I love that Curtis Jones came on to that interview and spent a quarter of it talking about his new baby.”

And finally this post read: “Happy dad Curtis Jones put up an amazing performance and an even better post match interview.”

Zendaya reveals incredible figure in daring gold cut out dress as she channels Cher at Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

ACTRESS Zendaya sent her sartorial message that she’s Hollywood’s sylph-like golden girl, in a daring cut-out dress.

The 28-year-old was channeling a classic 1972 look worn by superstar Cher, as she attended the 39th Rock and Roll induction ceremony in the US, where the legendary singer, 78, was being honoured.

Her dress, a gold vintage outfit from costumer Bob Mackie’s 2001 collection feathers a criss cross halter neckline and straps tautly tied around her midriff.

The shimmering skit was split at the thigh, giving an eye ful of her long and toned legs.

The Spider Man star was later joined by singers Dua Lipa 29, and Cher 78, backstage as the trio posed for photos.

During the evening, Dua and Cher opened the show as they performed together in edgy black leather outfits.

During the A-list event, Paul Mescal, legendary West Side story actress Rita Moreno and Quentin Tarantino, were all  honored with awards.

The evening helped raise vital funds to support museum exhibitions, education initiatives, and public programming.

Back in April, The Sun reported on Zendaya’s life in Britain.

Since shacking up with British Spider-Man actor Tom Holland in South-West London, she was more likely to be spotted shopping at Waitrose than at an A-list party.

Despite her scene-stealing role in Dune: Part Two — the highest-grossing film of 2024 at the worldwide box office — the actress was said to spend her free time on guided tours of Hampton Court Palace and popping to trendy London bakery Gail’s.

As if to hammer home her soft spot for England, Zendaya stepped out in a Wimbledon-themed dress at the UK premiere of her new movie, Challengers, in Spring.

Released on April 26, she played Tashi Donaldson, a former tennis player turned coach, who finds herself in a love triangle with The Crown’s Josh O’Connor and Tony Award-nominee Mike Faist.

The trailer sent the internet into meltdown with a steamy scene of the trio getting intimate in a hotel room.

A source who has worked with Zendaya says the star picks her roles carefully to avoid being typecast.

Now worth an estimated £17million, the former Disney Channel star was 19 when she played MJ in the first of three Spider-Man movies alongside Tom as the superhero.

The source told The Sun: “Once she signs on to a job, she gives it her all.

“On Challengers that means graphic sex scenes and some heavy and emotionally complex dialogue as well.

“She’s earning a reputation for never ‘phoning it in’ and always giving 110 per cent, and that’s going to make her a lot richer if she keeps picking hits at the rate she has.”

He said: ‘I’ve been playing and practising for decades. That’s how I won’[/caption]

The 82-year-old was searched and the metal replica — painted to look like a real conker but ten times heavier — was discovered in a hidden pocket.

Jakins claimed he carried the fake for a joke and has now been backed after a probe.

The retired engineer insisted: “I’m so relieved to be cleared.

“We are gentlemen at the World Conker Championships and we don’t cheat.

“I’ve been playing and practising for decades. That’s how I won.

“I admit I had the steel conker in my pocket, but I didn’t play with it.

“I show it to people as a joke.

“But I won’t be bringing it to the tournament again.”

Jakins, who has entered the contest in Northamptonshire for 47 years in a row, won the men’s title but lost the Grand Final to the women’s champion, American Kelci Banschbach.

A spokesman said: “We have studied photos and videos of matches, interviewed judges and examined the chestnuts used by King Conker.

“The investigation has found no evidence that the steel conker was used.

“King Conker has been cleared of suspicion, and his name is being engraved on the trophy.”

Jakins, of Warmington, added: “If you think you can beat me, come and play next year.”

Carragher provided punditry alongside former team-mate Daniel Sturridge and Micah Richards, with whom he also covers the Champions League on CBS.

The ex-England international insisted Jones “should have” been awarded another penalty for Liverpool.

Presenter Kelly Cates immediately responded: “You’ve firmed up a bit.”

Richards addressed his fellow CBS analyst: “You were 50-50 at half-time, has someone been in your DM’s?”

The panel then burst into laughter before Carragher quipped: “No it was a penalty, you leave my DMs out of it.”

Cates replied: “Alright, don’t bring your CBS chat on here”

And Sturridge ended the funny segment by saying: “Chill out man, what’s going on.”

Carragher and Richards often find themselves taking a cheeky dig at each other live on the CBS studio alongside fellow legend Thierry Henry and presenter Kate Abdo.

RAF jet lasers designed to dazzle heat seeking missiles successfully tested against swarm of rockets

A LASER for RAF planes to dazzle heat-seeking missiles has been successfully tested for the first time against a swarm of incoming rockets.

The Ministry of Defence said the lasers hit multiple targets with pinpoint accuracy.

Miysis is expected to be fitted to a range of RAF aircraft, including the A400M Atlas transporter[/caption]

It claimed the missiles were “defeated faster than the time it takes to read this sentence”.

The Miysis lasers “confuse” missile guidance systems and steer rockets away from their targets.

They need only 1,300 watts of power — the same as a microwave oven.

The trials in remote northern Sweden were the first time the Miysis lasers had “defeated a range of infrared heat-seeking missiles being fired simultaneously”.

The MoD said: “RAF pilots are one step closer to being equipped with a cutting-edge laser self-protection system, following 100 per cent successful live-fire trials.”

It is expected to be fitted to a range of RAF aircraft, including the A400M Atlas transporter.

Miysis, made by aerospace company Leonardo, was originally designed to save helicopters from shoulder-launched heat-seeking missiles.

They are an upgrade to old-fashioned flares, also known as chaff, which burst out of aircraft like fireworks to confuse heat-seeking missiles.
