Charles always makes the same joke about one of my songs, says Lionel Ritchie as he opens up about friendship with King

MEETING King Charles is a nerve-racking time for most big stars, many of whom practise their bows and curtseys long before.

But Lionel Richie, a close pal of our monarch, reveals the King likes to have a laugh with him every time they meet — including joking about one of the American superstar’s best-known songs.

“He comes into the room and he goes, ‘Hello . . . is it me you’re looking for?’,” Lionel says with a laugh, as we sit down for an exclusive chat.

“It’s always that one line he will come up with.

“He has a great sense of humour. A lot of people don’t know that part of him, but he is quite funny.”

Last year, Lionel, 75 — who is touring the UK in 2025 — was one of the star performers at The Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle to celebrate King Charles III taking the throne.

His voice filled with pride, Lionel says: “There are moments in your career when you go, ‘Let me pinch myself one more time’, and this was one.

“King Charles and I have known each other for a very long time, and the thing about it is, to see him go from a prince to a king is an exciting moment in my life — and certainly in his life.

“But to be in the crowd, to be a part of it, is the part that I thought was so amazing.

‘I’m nosy about future’

“Just to be a kid from Tuskegee, Alabama, and sitting in Westminster Abbey — it was quite a grand occasion and one I will never forget.”

When I ask if they are pen pals, as I assume Charles is not on WhatsApp like the rest of us, Lionel replies: “Well, the good news is that, yes, we communicate by writing.

“He is still a great writer. If I say something, he will respond in terms of a note.

“We have to consider I have been famous for most of my life, while he has been famous for all of his life. You are talking about such a responsibility.

“To see anyone still enjoying their life and being real . . . believe it or not, the King is a real person, he’s a real person and God bless him.”

It’s not surprising the King is a fan of Lionel, as the singer has shifted more than 125million records worldwide thanks to an epic back catalogue including megahits All Night Long and Hello.

But despite being over 40 years into his career, Lionel has no plans to slow down.

And he will hit the road again next summer as he kicks off the UK leg of his tour of Europe, starting on June 4 in Glasgow.

The Say Hello To The Hits gigs are part of his first arena tour here since 2016.

Lionel says: “I am using Mick Jagger as my example of when to come off stage.

“He doesn’t look like he is going off stage any time soon. So, as far as I am concerned, as long as I can get on stage, run the stage and then get off the stage by myself, I will be doing this for a long time.

“I have the Italian race car driver’s theory. What is behind me doesn’t count — it’s what is in front of me, what am I going to do next?

He has a great sense of humour. A lot of people don’t know that part of him, but he is quite funny

Lionel Richie

“I am nosy about what the future is going to be.

“As time goes on, you realise there’s movies and television and touring. I am constantly trying to think of the next thing. You have to plan and work on it.

“I lucked out with half the problem already because the songs and the catalogue survived the test of time.”

The man in front of me is practically Peter Pan — buzzing with energy and excitement about the future.

Lionel explains: “I am so excited about this tour. I have been touring since 1971. So if I don’t get out of the house, I don’t feel like I have had a full year.”

He adds of his age: “They start calling off this number and I’m like, ‘Who, me?’. I have always tried to hold on to the child inside.

“I have always been a believer in, ‘Don’t lose the child’. A lot of my friends couldn’t wait to grow up. I hear the number but it has nothing to do with my body.”

He jokes: “They keep saying ‘Happy Birthday’. If they say it to me one more time I’m going to have a nervous breakdown.”

While some artists barely half his age — including Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande, both 31 — openly dislike touring the globe, Lionel cannot get enough of it.

He says: “I love life on the road. It is very difficult to tell people to get away from me when they start a conversation saying, ‘I love you’.

“I found that I am now a citizen of the world, so when I get to Sheffield or Birmingham or Manchester, people say to me, ‘Welcome home Lionel, I love you’.

“We are talking 40 or 50 years later. I don’t take it for granted for one moment.

“I still get the same buzz walking out on stage, if not better.

“When you first start out, you are kind of like, ‘Yeah, I got a hit record, this is going to be for ever’ — and then, as time goes on, you see where artists’ records don’t perform well and they don’t last long.

My hobby, the thing I did to chill out, is what I do for a living. I go out on stage and perform — that is everything to me

Lionel Richie

“Then here we are, 40 years later. It’s the same enthusiasm as when I had the record the first time. I lucked out in life. My hobby, the thing I did to chill out, is what I do for a living. I go out on stage and perform — that is everything to me.”

While he is not afraid to enjoy life, it is clear Lionel values his health and prioritises sleep and fitness over partying All Night Long.

A nice glass of red, for example, is more of a treat then a daily occurrence.

Lionel smiles and reveals: “The most important thing is sleep. The hardest word you will ever have to say in this business is, ‘Goodnight’.

“I had to learn that, way back, with The Commodores.

“There is always a party happening in every city and, if you are the lead singer, you can’t just plug in and perform.

“You can do that with your guitar or your drums, but the vocals all have to come from sleep, so I am the only one who is the party pooper.

“I’m the one who says, ‘OK guys, I’ve got to go. I will see you tomorrow’.

“If I can get eight hours’ sleep, I’m smoking. If I can get ten, I am singing like a bird.”

After I tell him I find it almost impossible to say no to a free party, Lionel adds: “I’m telling you, Jack, the hardest thing to say is ‘Goodnight’.

“You would be in that category. But once you walk out on stage and you can’t sing, you will change your tune — it will sober you up really quick.

“When we first started out, you are bulletproof. You can stay up all night, you can drink whatever you want — you can do anything.

“As time goes on, you realise how lucky you are that you didn’t destroy yourself in the younger years.

“A lot of people make bad habits and bad mistakes and, by the time they get to 30 or 40, they can’t perform any more.

“I am the protector of the body at this stage. I realise that there is only one name up on the marquee and it says ‘Lionel Richie’, so I have got to protect myself from myself.”

‘Can I have a hug?’

It’s clear from the outset that Lionel cannot wait to get back on the road and see his UK fans. But one thing he will not be trying out is our questionable public transport.

After I tell him I was almost late for our interview after being stuck on London’s Tube, he chuckles: “I haven’t been on the Tube in years.

“I did it one time in the last 50 years — I went over to the O2, but then I realised that I am like a postcard walking across the street.

“What is Lionel Richie doing on the Tube? Everyone has a camera. There used to be a time when all they wanted was an autograph and nobody would know you were there. Now everyone wants a photo.”

Refreshingly frank about a lifetime in the spotlight, he adds: “There is a period when you go, ‘Look at me, look at me, look at me’, and that’s when you don’t have any hit records.

“Then you finally have a hit record or two and you go, ‘Don’t look at me, don’t look at me’ — and then, as time goes on, you go, ‘Why aren’t you looking at me?’.

“The other thing that is happening now  — forget the cameras, forget the phones — everyone now says, ‘Can I have a hug?’.”

My problem is that once I get to one pub, I am pretty much done on the first pub

Lionel Richie

He adds: “The biggest problem I’ve had travelling? Someone once said to me, ‘Let’s go to a pub’, and I’ve got to tell you, every time I go to a pub, they tell me what a great time we had.

“I don’t remember a damn thing. To this day, I still test myself here and I say, ‘Can we survive the pub one more time?’.”

Here is a topic I feel we can bond on, so I ask what he makes of the great British pub crawl — and then have to explain what it is.

Lionel laughs and says: “Let me tell you, that probably won’t happen. My problem is that once I get to one pub, I am pretty much done on the first pub.

“The word ‘crawl’ means I will sleep. I am out. I am going home.”

But by the end of our chat, the crooner seems to have warmed to the idea, adding: “Well, Jack, I hope to see you when the tour gets there. Somewhere between bar-crawling and otherwise.

“I hope maybe we don’t have to crawl, but we can grab a drink somewhere. That’s a deal, man.”

Big Brother reveals first nominated housemate after new Head of House Twist

On Friday, Big Brother’s second evicted housemate was revealed as Daze – and now Nathan could be hot on her heels.

He was nominated by Khaled and Marcello after the Heads of House twist, which saw Ali and Dean jointly taking on the role.

They snuck off to a secret basement to deliberate.

During the episode, Big Brother gathered the housemates together and said: “Today the next Head of House will be chosen.

“The Head of House enjoys the luxuries, privileges and most importantly immunity from the next eviction.

“Who is the right person for the job?”

“In Big Brother’s gallery a series of glass portraits stand tall each one featuring the face of a housemate.

” Khaled, you will be first to enter my gallery, you must choose one face to destroy thus removing that Housemate from the competition.

“Once you’ve made your choice you must then decide who will be next into the portrait gallery.

“Whose portrait will be left standing to become the new Head of House?”

As the Housemates all make their choices, only two portraits remained.

Big Brother then revealed their would be two heads of house.

Both making their way to the basement whilst going unnoticed by the rest of the Housemates, Big Brother told them: “Tomorrow [Monday], Housemates will nominate.

“Big Brother wants to let you in on a secret. Housemates will nominate in pairs, each pair must nominate another pair of Housemates to face eviction.

Big Brother 2024 cast

A brand new batch of Big Brother housemates are living it up in the famous compound.

Meet the cast of the 2024 series:

  • Rosie, 29, dental assistant from Cornwall.
  • Emma, 53, aesthetics business owner from Altrincham.
  • Segun, 25, charity videographer from Watford.
  • Nathan, 24, pork salesman from Dumfries.
  • Daze, 24, climate activist from London.
  • Khaled, 23, sales manager from Manchester.
  • Martha, 26, NHS administrator from Scarborough.
  • Lily, 20, Chinese takeaway server from Warrington.
  • Ali, 30, Forensic psychologist from London.
  • Thomas, 20 amputee footballer from Carlisle.
  • Ryan, 28, marketing and events from Stockport.
  • Hannah, 24, HR consultant from West London.
  • Izaaz, 29, sales consultant from London.
  • Sarah, 27, spa account manager from Shrewsbury.
  • Marcello, 34, youth mentor from East London.
  • Dean, 35, barber from East London

“Your power as Heads of House is to choose who will be in each pair. This is double trouble.”

Ali and Dean then debated whether to put friends together and keep them separate.

One fan was quick to take to X to agree with the choice and put: “This is getting BORING now. Let’s GET NATHAN OUT.”

Another added: “Nathan is a walking Ick.”

It came as he continued to pursue a connection with Baked Potato – after fans had slammed their partnership as a “showmance.”

Big Brother continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.

Rebecca Sudwarts, a fashionista who is five foot eight and in between a size 14 and 16, was lucky enough to get her hands on a range of must-have Autumn/Winter buys from Primark, including a pair of boots that are ‘so comfy and warm’.

Not only this, but she also nabbed jeans and jackets that are great for winter too.

So if you fancy treating yourself to some new clothes, but are on a budget and can’t afford to splash too much cash, then you’ll need to run down to Primark, and fast.

The curvy fashion fan, who is from the UK, took to social media to share her honest thoughts on her new Primark haul, leaving many very impressed.

Posting online, the ex Senior Fashion Buyer kicked off her haul and said: “I’m back with a great Primark haul. I’m so impressed with Primark’s footwear at the moment, you’re going to be so impressed with what’s in these bags.”

First things first, the content creator tried on a grey long-sleeved top and a pair of blue straight leg jeans, as she beamed: “This jersey body is £7 and it’s a really lovely, lightweight quality, you wouldn’t get too hot in it and it would be a perfect layer to wear under knitwear and coats.

“I’m such a fan of Primark jeans, these are £16. They’re 100% cotton, they’re really nice quality and they don’t feel too tight, you could wear them all day. I think they’re super flattering.”

She also showed a pair of new boots, as she added: “How cute are these boots? £22, a teddy borg.

“The insole is really sturdy, it’s padded and super warm and cosy.”

Following this, she tried on a £38 brown coat, as she continued: “I managed to get my hands on this coat – I love the colour.

“I really like how it falls open, but done up, it’s a nice shape.”

Rebecca also showed off a £21 knitted bomber jacket, as she explained: “I then saw this knitted bomber which I love.

“It does contain some wool, it’s a really nice quality, thick, it would keep you super warm in the winter.”

Why is Primark the place to go to for bargains?

JUST how does Primark do it? Continue delivering on-trend items at such incredible prices? According to bosses, it's down to four points.

  • They “sell a lot of items” – Thanks to that, they are able to make savings by buying in bulk for their 191 UK stores
  • They “do very little advertising”
  • While their clothes offer the “latest trends”, they “don’t use expensive hangers, tags or labels”.
  • And lastly, they try to be “as efficient as possible when transporting products from factories to stores”. This includes things like asking “suppliers to pack our t-shirts so they are ready to go straight on shelf”.

For more information about how Primark keeps their costs so low, and are able to deliver such amazing bargains, visit the Primark website.

The influencer was thrilled when she modelled a £19 cardigan, as she expressed: “This cardigan caught my eye, I love the brown and the grey colour combination.

“It’s got quite a premium handwriting for Primark. It layers perfectly over the jersey body.”

The best Primark buys for autumn 2024

Autumn is upon us, and it's time to make some additions to our cosy wardrobes.

Here, Fabulous fashion editor Clemmie Fieldsend reveals her top 5 buys from Primark this Autumn.

The Edit Overcoat, £60

I know what you’re thinking, ‘£60 for Primark?’ Yes it’s a higher price tag than we’re used to from Primark but its worth every penny.
It’s from their Edit range which is more premium than the rest of their collection and it’s made to last.
It’s a mixed wool blend which is durable and warm, plus its a timeless straight silhouette which is slightly oversized and will last you not only this season but for many after.

Extra Large Croc Effect Shopper, £16

Big bags are back… In a big way, finally.
This tote screams luxury with its croc effect and burnt orange colour, plus its great for shoving in your laptop, lunch, spare shoes, purse – essentially everything you need for the day – all for £16.

Rita Ora Worker Jacket, £32

Field jackets are on the backs of celebrities and catwalk models this season with designer brands Barbour, Burberry and Bottega all championing the utilitarian look.
They’re great for chucking over jeans or contrasting with a floral or floaty dress and are the perfect transitional jacket.

Square Neck Leopard Midi Dress, £18,

You may have seen, heard and read that leopard print isn’t going anywhere for autumn, so to encapsulate the trend this dress is a must.
Sleeves? Check. Midi length? Check. Ultra flattering square neck? Check. It’s got it all.
Pair with black knee high boots or your favourite trainers for the day and dress up with gold heels and accessories for the evening.

Barrel Denim Jeans, £16

Barrel, balloon, horseshoe – whatever you want to call them, they are the must have trouser shape of this season.
I’ve tried Primarks pair and they fit like a dream, are comfortable and flattering.
So if you think you have nothing that hits the trend mark, swapping your go-to denim for this shape will bring you bang up to date.

She also nabbed a £36 faux suede bomber, which left her beaming: “It feels very, very heavy. It would keep you super warm, the quality inside is really nice.

“I think this is such an amazing coat for the price, I love the little buckle detail.

“It’s an incredible colour, a really good colour for the season.”

Primark's history

PRIMARK first opened in 1969 as Pennies in Dublin, hoping to provide affordable fashion in Ireland.

A Primark store officially opened as Primark in 1974 in Derby.

The retailer now has 193 stores across the UK and 441 stores worldwide with a goal of running 530 stores by the end of 2026.

And to finish off her haul, Rebecca tried on a pair of £18 boots, which she thought would be great for Ugg fans, as she shared: “I absolutely love these. They are fully fur lined.

“They have a padded insole, they feel so comfy and so warm.

“A really nice alternative to Ugg boots.”

FASHION FANS DIVIDED

The Instagram clip, which was posted under the username @stylingwithrebecca, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as at the time of writing, it had quickly racked up 236,000 views.

But social media users were left divided by Rebecca’s clip, in particular by the Primark boots.

However, at the same time, one fashionista wrote: “Boots are awful.”

Whilst someone else admitted: “I couldn’t watch the video cause I was too busy looking in horror at the boots.”

‘I no longer have to wait for the windows to de-mist’ drivers rave about £9 buy that’s a must for cold mornings

MISTY windscreens are something none of us want to deal with this autumn and winter.

But luckily cash-savvy drivers have been raving over an affordable Amazon bargain that tackles the annoying – and dangerous – issue in just minutes.

Drivers have been raving over an Amazon bargain that demists their windscreens in minutes
Alamy

By now, most of us have come across dehumidifiers for our homes – but did you know there are similar gadgets designed for your car as well?

Retailing for a purse-friendly £9.99, the Reusable Microwaveable Moisture Absorbing Bag is bound to become a game-changer, as the temperatures are begin to drop.

The basics behind misty windscreens are that the air inside your car has millions of little water droplets in it.

When you get in the car or if it’s parked in sunlight, the resulting heat causes the vapour to rise and come into contact with your windscreen, where it condenses and forms a mist.

However, all that doesn’t really help when you’re sat in a cold car, with the air-conditioning on full blast and the windows open, trying not to be late for work or the school run.

The de-mister is essentially a bag full of water-absorbing granules – it soaks up all the extra water in the air, so you get a clear windscreen.

Just leave it on your dash the night before and let it get to work – and the best bit is that it’s reusable.

Once every couple of months, pop it in the microwave for 10 minutes and it’s ready to go.

According to the online retailer, the car essential absorbs over 400ml of moisture.

Simply place the anti slip pad on your dashboard or real shelf and put the 1KG Bag on top and the magic will take place.

With over 430 ratings, it’s easy to see why the demister has become a major hit amongst drivers, winning an impressive four-star rating.

One customer who described the product as ”brilliant” said: ”Saves me at least five minutes every day sitting waiting for the car to demist.

”It must have saved me the price of it in petrol already so a win win for the environment too.”

Another tried using it in their laundry room – and had nothing but good things to say.

Most common illegal driving activities

Here's a list of reckless driving behaviour and the fines and penalties you risk getting from it.

  • Using phone while driving
A cheeky glance at a phone screen will result in six penalty points on your licence and a £200 fine.
New drivers might lose their licence if caught doing so within two years of obtaining it.
  • Speeding
Lovers of fast and furious will end up with a minimum of three points and a £100 fine.
  • Running a red light
This offence will incur three points and £100 fine.
  • Middle lane hogging
It constitutes careless driving and police will hand you a £100 fine with three penalty points.
  • Undertaking
This could possibly result in three points on your licence and a £100 fine.

”I bought this dehumidifier to prevent condensation in our room where we dry our laundry during the winter and to prevent damp odour.

”It has been an excellent buy and value for money. No running costs, just dried out in the microwave when full of moisture.

”I plan to get another for my car now I know they do work.”

Someone else chimed in: ”I had a leak in the car and it kept the damp under control till I could get it fixed.”

However, not everyone was satisfied with their purchase, as one online shopper said ”Can’t say I noticed much difference but unsure if maybe my car is just in a more mew state.

”Would of been interesting to see with my old one that notoriously used to suffer.”

A second critic penned: ”During the lockdown my car started to smell a bit damp.

”So I bought these to try and reduce the humidity. it’s hard to see if they have had any real effect and they don’t seem to soaked up much water over months.

”Doing this properly needs an electric dehumidifier.”

DIY whizz shares trick to keep your home warm this winter with ‘fake double glazing’ hack – and it only costs pennies

IT’S no secret that the cost of heating homes has soared, leaving many people trying out alternative methods to keep warm.

One savvy woman has shared her trick that’s perfect for renters who don’t have double glazed windows and want to keep out the cold air.

The bubble wrap acts like another layer of glazing on windows to keep heat in[/caption]

You don’t need to fork out on any pricey products either – some good old fashioned bubble wrap is all you need.

Posting on Instagram, Jen shared the trick and showed how to make it renter-friendly, leaving other DIY fans stunned.

All you need to do is buy a roll of bubble wrap – you can buy a large roll from Amazon for as little as £8.49, which would be big enough to cover most of the windows in your home, or simply use any you’ve got from packages and don’t spend a penny.

Cut the bubble wrap to size so it firs in your window pane exactly, then you can either stick it on using tape, or make the most out of Jen’s renter tip.

“We’re not sure we’re going to leave it up so in this case we’re just going to use a wet cloth or a spray bottle [of water],” she explained.

The black the flat side of the bubble wrap to the glass, and the bubble wrap should stick to the glass.

If you are using tape, make sure the bubbles are facing outwards though, the DIY whizz added.

After the window was completely covered in bubble wrap, Jen shared an update from Issaac, whose bedroom the window is in.

“I woke up this morning and my nose was warm!! And the whole house had the cool edge taken off it! Was really amazing,” he told Jen.

The viral video caught the attention of other DIY lovers, and one revealed they used the hack in their old home too.

“I did this in the apartment I rented back in 2017,” they wrote.

“It solved two problems with the huge windows, privacy and window condensation.

“No more mildew grew around the frames and it made a big difference with temperature and I had plenty of light and some appreciated privacy – end of the tenancy I just peeled it off and used it to wrap my stuff for the move.”

Another also loved the hack: “I used this in my glass greenhouse and it worked great,” they commented on the clip.

“I do this every year in winter for my kids’ rooms because their beds are close to the windows. It actually works,” someone else penned.

And another chimed in: “I did this and it also stopped all the condensation during winter, love it.”

Other tricks to keep your home warm

Property expert Joshua Houston previously shared his tips for keeping your home warm this winter on a budget.

1. Curtains

“Windows are a common place for the outside cold to get into your home, this is because of small gaps that can let in air so always close your curtains as soon as it gets dark,” he said.

This simple method gives you an extra layer of warmth as it can provide a kind of “insulation” between your window and curtain.

2. Rugs

“Your floor is another area of your home where heat can be lost and can make your home feel chilly,” he continued. “You might notice on cold days, that your floor is not nice to walk on due to it freezing your feet.

“Add rugs to areas that don’t already have a carpet, this provides a layer of insulation between your bare floor and the room above.”

3. Check your insulation

Check your pipes, loft space, crawlspaces and underneath floorboards.

“Loose-fill insulation is very good for this, and is a more affordable type of insulation, with a big bag being able to be picked up for around £30,” Joshua explained.

4. Keep your internal doors closed

“Household members often gather in one room in the evening, and this is usually either the kitchen or living room,” Joshua said.

“This means you only have to heat a small area of your home, and closing the doors keeps the heat in and the cold out.”

5. Block drafts

Don’t forget to check cat flaps, chimneys and letterboxes, as they can let in cold air if they aren’t secure

5 Money-saving tips for autumn/winter

1. Draught-proof your home

It takes time and money to heat up your home, so it’s important that you do as much as you can to keep in the warmth. Close your doors and windows, and fill any gaps with a draught excluder.

2. Dial down your thermostat

According to Energy UK, turning down your thermostat by just one degree Celsius could cut your heating bill by up to 10%, and save you around £85 per year. Plus, if you don’t have a thermostat, installing one could save up to £70 per year!

3. Move furniture around

Make sure not big, bulky furniture like sofas are blocking radiators.

4. Wash clothes on a lower temp and add an extra spin

Unless it’s bedding, towels or really dirty items, dial down the temperature to 20 or 30 degrees, and do a double spin to remove excess water.

5. Heat the person not the home

More winter laundry tips

Tackling laundry in the winter can be a challenge, but these handy tips can help you stay on top of it:

  • Use a Dehumidifier: Place a dehumidifier in your drying area to speed up the drying process and prevent dampness.
  • Spin Cycle Boost: Run an extra spin cycle on your washing machine to remove excess water from clothes, reducing drying time.
  • Indoor Drying Rack: Invest in a good-quality indoor drying rack and position it near a radiator or in a well-ventilated room.
  • Tumble Dryer Balls: Add tumble dryer balls to your dryer to help clothes dry faster and reduce static cling.
  • Space-Saving Hangers: Use space-saving hangers or a retractable washing line to maximise indoor drying space.
  • Microfibre Towels: Lay microfibre towels over your drying rack to absorb extra moisture from hanging clothes.
  • Partially Dry Outside: On dry days, hang clothes outside for a short period before bringing them in to finish drying.

These hacks can help you keep your laundry routine efficient and your clothes fresh, even during the colder months.

Whilst someone else shared: “These are so useful for hanging a few socks/undies to try, or a hand towel…

“I wouldn’t be without them!

“My current set is about 15 years old and the white covering is only now beginning to crack and come off.”

At the same time, one happy shopper wrote: “This is the best price and reliable product.”
