Angelina Jolie is No Saint But She Was Ready to Doom Her Career to Fight Harvey Weinstein: ‘I said no because he was involved’

If there’s one thing Angelina Jolie is known for, it’s her fierce determination. With a bold personality, she’s always made it clear she knows what she wants, and that didn’t change when she crossed paths with Harvey Weinstein.

When she was still pretty young, she had an encounter with the former Miramax executive, and she didn’t hold back in describing just how awful the experience was. The actress even had a fight with her ex-husband Brad Pitt when she saw him working on projects that had Weinstein’s name attached. To this day, she’s still very outspoken about her feelings toward the convicted s*x offender.

In 2020, Harvey Weinstein was convicted of s*x crimes after being accused by several actresses. One of them was Angelina Jolie, who, at just twenty-one and early in her career, had her own encounter with the former producer.

In a 2021 interview with The Guardian, Jolie was asked about the first time she felt disrespected as a woman, and she didn’t hesitate to name Weinstein. At the time, she was working on the film Playing by Heart, which was produced by Miramax Films — his company. (via IndieWire)

In her account, she said that she managed to get away before it was too late, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t experience harassment. Jolie stated:

If you get yourself out of the room, you think he attempted but didn’t, right? The truth is that the attempt and the experience of the attempt is an assault. (…) It was beyond a pass, it was something I had to escape. I stayed away and warned people about him. I remember telling Jonny [Lee Miller], my first husband, who was great about it, to spread the word to other guys — don’t let girls go alone with him.

Because of that, Jolie quickly decided she didn’t want to be involved in anything with Weinstein’s name on it, even if it meant hurting her career. Whether people liked it or not, he had a lot of influence back then, and making a choice like that was a huge risk for her.

The former producer, aware of Jolie’s comments, was quick to claim his side of the story was different. Even from prison, he had his assistant send a statement to TMZ at the time, denying the harassment allegations.

The actress also shared that she was offered a role in Martin Scorsese‘s 2004 film The Aviator, but when she found out that Weinstein’s production company was involved, she turned it down. However, when the same situation arose with her then-husband, Brad Pitt, he didn’t react the same way.

In her interview with The Guardian, Jolie also admitted that she and Pitt had a fight when he was cast in Inglourious Basterds, a film co-produced by the Weinstein Company. She believed he would support her by turning down the role, but he didn’t:

It was hard for me when Brad did.

To make matters worse, the actor, who knew exactly what his wife at the time had gone through when she was younger, didn’t even seem to consider the possibility of standing by her side in this situation.

In 2012, he also reached out to Weinstein to ask him to produce his film Killing Them Softly. The ex-couple ended up arguing again, with Jolie admitting, “of course it hurt.” She also made a point of skipping promotional events for the film.

However, it seems that Pitt may have changed his stance later on, as Plan B Entertainment — his production company — was involved in She Said, a film about The New York Times reporters who helped expose Weinstein in the investigation that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2018.
