It’s been two years since Hell is Us was announced. There was huge excitement regarding these upcoming Soulslike action-adventure titles. It was also slated to be released somewhere around 2023. But things didn’t go as planned and all the hype regarding this title was doomed eventually.
Now out of nowhere, the game makes a surprising entry at the recently concluded PlayStation’s State of Play. Not only that, but finally we have got the official release window as well, along with a gameplay reveal trailer. Seeing the gameplay, you are surely going to reconnect some memories with some of the masterpieces of the popular Japanese video game designer.
Hell is Us Has Uncanny Similarities with Some Popular Hidetaka Miyazaki Titles
In the latest PlayStation’s State of Play, the gameplay trailer of Hell is Us is revealed. Taking a first look at the game, you can definitely tell that this game looks and plays like a lot of other titles by none other than Hidetaka Miyazaki. Miyazaki was the first man to bring about a revolution in the world of Soulslike titles.
With the immersive gameplay, stunning visuals, and appealing in-game aesthetics of his games, he took the breath of the fans away. Now, this recently announced title might be created by former Human Revolution art director and present creative director at Rogue Factor, Jonathan Jacques-Belletête. But at first glance, Hell is Us might feel like it’s made by Miyazaki.
First of all, the enemies in the game looked quite similar to those of Silent Hill, like the Wall Corpse or the Wanderers. Now that it’s a Soulslike title, the gameplay looks like Bloodborne or Dark Souls. Also, the tab, which we see in the game, is giving us Death Stranding vibes too. I also feel the game sometimes feels like a mashup of Control and Death Stranding as well.
However, the exciting and unique part about the game is that, despite being a Soulslike title, the game is not set in a typical dark fantasy world and has an obscure lore. So, despite looking like a Hidetaka Miyazaki title, the game has its own ingredients too. The game is set for another showcase on YouTube on September 30 as well.
“Player-Plattering”– A Unique Idea in Hell is Us
The game might look like any ordinary horror sci-fi third-person title. But the game has its own essence. In a PlayStation.Blog post, Jacques-Belletête stated the game will offer “something radically different.” So, what will be different?
Unlike other games, where players are spoon-fed guides and maps to find out the respective destinations, in this game, there will be traditional aids. In simple words, there will be no such kind of map or compass to show you the path or your next quest objectives.
To find that, you have to delve deeper into the game and rely on your own observation, reasoning, and intuition to progress. The most crucial part is to take a closer look at the NPCs, which will guide you through your journey. According to the creative director, this concept is called “Player-Plattering.” This concept is opposite to the conventional “Silver-Plattering,” where players get served their way out on silver plates.
