With more than a decade passing between the debut of the original Warhammer 40k: Space Marine and its sequel, Space Marine 2, gamers were rightfully concerned that the sequel might not reach the same heights. After all, the complete development was in the hands of a completely different developer, Saber Interactive, rather than fan-favorite Relic Entertainment.
Thankfully, the concerns seemed to be unnecessary, as Space Marine 2 has proved itself to be a perfect addition to the legendary franchise and a worthy successor to the original game. The game’s success can be attributed to a range of incredible additions and features, but one of them shares similarities with the iconic Gears of War games, proving that they’re the best titles to enjoy with your buddies!
Space Marine 2’s Phenomenal Campaign Evokes Nostalgia
Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 from Saber Interactive features blood-pumping combat and stunning visuals wrapped in an incredibly immersive atmosphere. Throughout the title, gamers will go against legions of deadly Tryanids alongside fellow Space Marines, slaying hordes of aliens.
What’s interesting about the game is that its campaign isn’t particularly long. A standard playthrough of the campaign can take you anywhere between 10-12 hours. While that might seem short, creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick states that the campaign has been intentionally crafted in a way to replicate the nostalgia of Gears of War.
I recently went to an old friend’s house, and we used to play all of those Gears of War games. I’d go around on a Friday night, and we’d play until we finished the campaign – you could finish the campaign in one evening. We’d drink, eat, and play. I went back to his house last weekend, and we played Space Marine 2 from start to finish. It was just this amazing flashback experience!
If we take a look at most of the modern games, it can take you up to 40 hours to finish exploring everything they have to offer. It’s a nightmare to finish them in one sitting, which ruins the gaming experience if you’re playing with friends and family.
However, that’s not the case with Both Gears of War and Space Marine 2. Both games feature a short campaign that can be completed in a single day, with still time to have a couple of drinks before calling it a night. That’s what most of the early 2010’s games were like before the industry moved towards dragging out things.
Space Marine 2‘s success proves gamers still crave such experiences, and if other developers follow a similar path, they can achieve incredible success.
Saber Interactive Continues to Elevate Space Marine 2 Experience
There’s no doubt that Space Marine 2 is best enjoyed with a squad of friends, especially when it comes to higher difficulties. Enemies are way too aggressive and pack a punch, meaning those who want to be a lone wolf are in for a potentially frustrating time.
Saber has recently dropped brand-new patch notes for the game’s latest update, and alongside adding ultra-wide monitors and private lobbies for co-op Operations, it has made some massive balance adjustments. In the game’s main campaign, aggressiveness for the enemies in Veteran Difficulty has been massively lowered to improve the overall experience for solo players.
However, this doesn’t mean your battle against Tryanids is getting easier! To make up for enemy nerfs, Saber has reduced players’ health to ensure they’re not able to steamroll through Veteran.
The adjustments for Veteran Difficulty is a major treat for solo players, but that’s not the end of the story. The other brand-new addition is the Sparring Arena, which stands as a unique arena in the Battlebarge that will allow gamers to engage in PvP matches with their squad mates. It’s a perfect way to practice weapons or improve on tactics.
