Until a few years ago, any video game adaptation felt like a bad investment for studios, as comic book properties were being adapted left and right, and everybody seemed to be keen on developing their own cinematic universe a la the MCU.
However, come the success of films like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it has become the case that studios want to take chances with video game properties once more. Even on the small screen, there seems to be a lot of quality that is being put out, with shows like Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, or even Castlevania. While these shows and films have re-instated gamers’ willingness to trust Hollywood, A Minecraft Movie might just be on its way to hurting gamers once more.
Fans are concerned about the A Minecraft Movie
It wasn’t that long ago when films like Dwayne Johnson’s Doom and Alicia Vikander’s Tomb Raider were the talk of the town. It had nothing to do with the fact that they were great films, but how horribly they managed to translate the excitement and richness of their source material to the screen. Studios seem to have forgotten these dark times, as A Minecraft Movie seems on its way to repeating history. Fans just cannot seem to get behind what Warner Brothers is serving up and have taken to the internet to get their concerns known.
While the film might have been a decision based on the recent success properties like Sonic the Hedgehog, fans are not convinced of the way in which A Minecraft Movie has been unfolding.
While studios have managed to pull off some of the greatest successes of the last few years with video game properties, Dwayne Johnson‘s Rampage and Gemma Arterton‘s Prince of Persia are grim reminders of how easy it is to fumble even the best video game properties. This is also true for films like Michael Fassbender‘s Assassin’s Creed, which tried to take a novel approach with its formula, only to be remembered as just another mediocre attempt.
Could A Minecraft Movie’s fall derail other video game films in development?
While A Minecraft Movie could discourage producers, there is a possibility that it could also delay the many video game films that are in production right now. The upcoming years are set to see sequels of major video game film franchises like Five Nights at Freddy‘s and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
However, Legendary is also hard at work on its Street Fighter reboot, which is set to hit theatres on March 20, 2026. Given that this seems to be the only film that is looking to launch an adaptation as a new IP, a failure from A Minecraft Movie might give producers of the film pause for thought.
All fans can do right now is wait and watch, since there were similar criticisms about Mario and his film as well, before it went on to make well over a billion dollars at the box office. Perhaps, A Minecraft Movie is also going to be able to make the kind of money, propelling the franchise into mainstream.
