The upcoming Max series, The Penguin, has all the elements to introduce the Court of Owls as the main antagonists in The Batman – Part II. The series is set to chronicle the rise of Colin Farrell’s The Penguin as he tries to take control of the criminal underbelly of Gotham following Carmine Falcone’s death and the flooding of the city.
One of the most important parts of Gotham’s history is the Court of Owls, the secret society which has been controlling the city since its inception. While many have speculated that Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II might introduce the popular antagonists, Farrell’s The Penguin might just lay the groundwork for it.
How Will The Court of Owls Connect To Colin Farrell’s The Penguin?
The Court of Owls was created by legendary comic book writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo in The New 52 continuity of the DC comics. They were posed to be the main antagonists of Batman in the storyline and comprised of the Gotham elite and powerful. The Court politically and financially controlled the running of Gotham City.
From the beginning of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, fans have been speculating the introduction of the Court. The depiction of Gotham as a cesspool of corruption, crime, and hopelessness hit its peak in the 2022 film and the expose of Gotham’s finest by the Riddler has lent itself to be the perfect setup for the Court to show up.
Colin Farrell’s The Penguin might just lay the groundwork for the secret society. With the series set to show the Penguin’s journey to the top of Gotham’s criminal food chain, he might come into contact with the Court, who can be established as the main puppet masters all along. Matt Reeves clearly mentioned that the events will directly lead to The Batman – Part II.
With Gotham on the road to recovery and Carmine Falcone dead, many players will emerge to take control of the city while Batman tries his best to keep them away. It also gives the Court of Owls the perfect window to seize control back and build the narrative of the city from the ground up again.
Matt Reeves Hinted At The Batman – Part II Exploring Deeper Into Gotham’s Corruption
Matt Reeves’ The Batman saw Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne come to terms with his family’s connection to Gotham’s rampant corruption. In the film, Wayne discovers that his father, Thomas, while running for Mayor had asked a favor from Carmine Falcone to merely dissuade a journalist from digging deep into Martha Wayne’s mental illness, but Falcone ended the journalist altogether.
Reeves revealed in a recent interview (via Deadline) that The Batman – Part II will also be a mystery and explore the deeper corruption in the city and its history. He said,
[The Batman – Part II is] going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places that he couldn’t anticipate in the first one. The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie, and it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see.
The Court of Owls in the comics has a connection with the Waynes, who were also credited to have found the city. While villains like Hush and Clayface have been speculated to be a part of the sequel, Reeves has only confirmed the inclusion of Colin Farrell’s Penguin.
The Batman is currently available to stream on Max.
