The world is ready for James Gunn’s DCU and fans are eagerly waiting for what the Guardians of the Galaxy director has in store for them. With a heavy emphasis on Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy), all eyes are on Gunn right now.
Amidst this tight performance pressure from the world, James Gunn seems to be not tense about the situation. While talking about the upcoming animated show Creature Commandos, Gunn actually revealed some important information about the nature of the show.
James Gunn’s Creature Commandos Will Not Be Sensitive!
Creature Commandos is an upcoming animated series from James Gunn’s DCU that the world is quite excited about. Since animated series were always a strong point for DC characters, fans have high hopes for Gunn’s take on the animated version of the DCU.
With a release date of sometime in December, there are reports that Creature Commandos will mark the first installment in the DCU and will be part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn compared the characters of Guardians and Creature Commandos with one big difference! A little lack of emotion can make all the difference in the world.
I’m used to dealing with oddballs and irregular types and weirdos. That’s what Guardians is, and Creature Commandos is kind of like Guardians without the sentimentality.
He further continued,
The Guardians are all really good characters at their heart, and that just isn’t necessarily the case with the creatures.
Although showcasing (or in this case, hiding) a little emotion goes a long way, there is a very particular reason why The Suicide Squad director chose to go ahead with the decision of no sentimentality.
During his talks, the director compared Marvel and DC Comics and it seems that we allegedly have a winner. Gunn sided with DC Comics in the fact that they have a more varied tone which allowed him more freedom.
James Gunn Compares Marvel And DC Comics
As the interview further continued, Gunn talked about the difference between Marvel and DC Comics. Although the comics are great in their own distinct ways, Gunn felt that he had more freedom with one than the other.
While talking about the plethora of characters that both the comics had in store for him, Gunn recalled that DC Comics had a more drastic change in tone and storylines of a certain comic book than the Marvel comics.
The thing I’ve always loved about DC Comics was that you had your mainstream comics that always ran, but they also had these tonally different comics like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns and All-Star Superman.
He further continued,
It was different from Marvel in that way. That’s something that I really want to retain within the studio, that every project is going to bring a different vision by the artists who are creating it.
Well, to each their own. It seems that Gunn has become quite confident in taking the reins of the DC Studios in his hands as he steers towards a future where the lighting isn’t so dark and the movies become worthwhile.
Creature Commandos marks Gunn’s first entry into the DCU and the world is quite excited for him. Creature Commandos is set for a release date of 5 December 2024 and will be available to stream on Max.
