“Oh, its the urine girl”: Cheryl Hines’ Mind-numbingly Dumb Dialogue Got Her ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Audition

Cheryl Hines has become a household name for portraying the role of Larry David’s on-screen wife, Cheryl, on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. The actress received two Emmy nods for her craft but before her entry in the HBO series, she was only working on small roles.

However, her casting story for the same is quite intriguing which links to her dumb dialogue. That dialogue ended up landing her on this coveted part where she suggested that someone drink their own urine.

Cheryl Hines’ Improvised Dialogue Landed Her on Curb Your Enthusiasm

Cheryl Hines has surely left an indelible mark in catapulting Curb Your Enthusiasm to success. Her comedic timing is the major factor in landing a role on the show as the lady was spotted by producer Robert Whitey during a sketch show at the Groundlings.

Since the show started as a one-hour special, they wanted an unknown actress for the role who was skillful in improvisation. Fortunately, Hines fell perfectly into this category as she explained that she had been working in small roles, meaning she was relatively unknown in the industry at the time.

As for how she proved to everyone about her improvisation skills, it was all in front of Whitey’s eyes.

In the sketch show which Whitey attended, she had to portray a character who felt out of place during an earthquake safety seminar. She recalled the moment, telling Graham Bensinger,

I had written this sketch about a woman in her workplace who felt a little like everybody else knows more than she knows. There’s a guy in there doing an earthquake safety seminar with the group, and my character is feeling like, “Wow, I don’t know any of this. They all know what to do.”

She was unsure of herself during the seminar, leading to a hilarious exchange when a guy in the seminar posed a question about what to do if water supplies run out during an earthquake.

Hines’ character blurted,

Well, if push comes to shove, you can drink your own urine.

The unexpected humor of this line captured the attention of Whitey. However, things got more interesting as what happened next was what truly showcased her skills.

While it was her ‘drink your urine’ remark that eventually led her to make an impact on the producer. Her bold character appeal also contributed to the same as she recalled that the seminar guy gave an alternative of checking the water heater to drink water which would rather be feasible.

But the actress gave a sharp reply stating, “You said if push comes to shove.” That particular ‘urine’ dumb dialogue ended up catching the producer’s attention who got called for an audition. She shared,

After that, they called me in to audition for Curb Your Enthusiasm for a one-hour special to improvise with Larry. When I walked into the audition, Bob, who had called me, said, “Oh, it’s the urine girl.” I was like, “Mhm, thank you.”

While anyone could have felt embarrassed at the time, Hines rather embraced the unique moniker, which acknowledged her improvisation skills. However, drinking urine in real life would not be appropriate!

While drinking a small amount might not cause harm, it could be risky if one drinks in larger amounts.

As per UPMC, urine contains waste products thus, drinking it can force the kidneys to push extra work or expose you to unnecessary toxins. This could cause illness, electrolyte disturbances, or kidney damage.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is available on HBO.
