Christopher Nolan is known by many as a genius when it comes to filmmaking. His works are a testament to his brilliant mind which works like a tireless machine, and in the process of it, he adapts many influences that inspire him into his own masterpieces.
He doesn’t shy away from admitting he plunders ruthlessly from other films that he finds interesting and worth getting inspiration from. Besides, nothing today is certainly original, but the product of years of art creation.
The Controversial Similarities Between 2010’s Inception And 2006’s Paprika
Inception is undoubtedly one of Christopher Nolan’s best works. His team-up with Leonardo DiCaprio made the film even more compelling as not only the Hollywood icon delivered his role with utmost conviction but the film’s overall narrative made people interested in the science of dreams.
Many would be wondering where the filmmaker got his concept for the 2010 movie and why he has not shared it yet with fans. There had been speculations that he was inspired by a 2006 Japanese anime called Paprika. Indeed, some of the scenes in Nolan’s work look painfully similar to the animated movie. Check out this video clip below:
Nolan has previously admitted copying from the James Bond films for his works in the Batman trilogy and Tenet. He notably mentioned to Empire (via Den of Geek) that he’s “been plundering ruthlessly” from the franchise, so it’s not too far-fetched to assume he also took great inspiration from Paprika.
As seen in the clip above, some of the famous scenes in Inception, such as the rotating hallway and the broken mirror scenes, are too similar to Paprika not to be noticed, especially by avid fans of the filmmaker.
Fans Show Support For Christopher Nolan’s Inception
Even with all the allegations thrown at Nolan’s Inception, the movie remains a classic work of art that is destined to stand the test of time. Fans defend that neither blatant plagiarism nor drama is happening here.

It’s easy to understand why some viewers find it controversial to perceive even the smallest similarities in various works of films. Inception and Paprika evidently share the same theme of exploring the human mind and using technology to infiltrate dreams. It does not necessarily promote or reduce the quality of either of the movies.
At the end of the day, the audience will be the judge of its own preferences. Inception and Paprika may actually work hand in hand in providing viewers an insight into how far human intelligence could take us in the near future.
Inception is available to stream on HBO. Paprika is streaming on Amazon Prime.
