In his viral video, TikTok user Alessandro (@spicymoustache) revealed how you can stop your garlic and onions from sprouting before you use them.
“Keep them separate and use paper bags to keep them in the dark,” he advised.
The TikToker demonstrated the simple technique before placing each of the paper bags in separate mesh sacks and hanging them in his kitchen.
Onions emit ethylene gas, which can cause the vegetables around them to begin sprouting.
Depending on the seed, light can play a role in germination, meaning dark storage areas are often ideal.
Similarly, Alessandro suggested storing your tomatoes in the dark to extend their shelf life.
He also explained how placing them with their stems on a flat cloth and covering them can help to avoid moisture loss, keeping them fresh for longer.
For potatoes, he recommended laying them flat in a dark breathable container.
The TikToker also advised his audience against washing off the layer of dirt on their potatoes.
For his next suggestion, Alessandro explained the best way to store your fruit.
He recommended separating your bananas and covering each stem with a piece of wax paper.
Alessandro also suggested placing the more popular fruit in your household in a separate container and storing it on your counter.
Finally, he advised his followers to store their fresh ingredients in airtight containers.
The food expert explained that this helps to keep your groceries fresh for longer.
He added that this tactic can help to reduce your food waste and eliminates single-use packaging.
The ‘right’ way to store food
1. Use Airtight Containers
This helps to prevent exposure to air which can cause your food to go off. A glass container can help to be more hygienic and a sustainable option.
2. Label Everything
By labelling your food it helps to keep track of expiry dates and avoid food waste.
3. Store Like Items Together
This makes it easier to find what you are looking for. Use fridge dividers or reusabale bags to help section your fridge.
4. Use the Fridge and Freezer Wisely
Keep raw meat on the bottom shelf to avoid contamination, and use the freezer for longer-term storage.
5. Rotate Your Stock
Place newer items at the back and bring the older ones forward. This will mean you will be able to notice the foods that need eating first.
