Javier Bardem & Chloë Sevigny’s Simple Responses to Erik Menendez Slamming Monsters Episode 2

Ryan Murphy’s second installment in Netflix’s Monsters series, The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story hasn’t sit well with the real-life Erik Menendez, who is still serving his time because of the 1989 killings of José and Kitty Menendez. Considering the case still continues, even three decades later, Menendez called out the Netflix show for allegedly misinterpreting certain aspects.

Weighing in the controversy, actors Javier Bardem & Chloë Sevigny, who portrayed parents Jose and Kitty Menendez in the show, shared that they are open to hearing his side of the story.

One of the biggest aspects of the show that irked Erik Menendez was the portrayal of the two brothers’ bond, as Ryan Murphy didn’t back down from touching on the incestuous allegations surrounding them. Following his detest with the series, Menendez issued a statement, shared by his wife on X, claiming that the portrayal of the duo’s relationship was rooted in “blatant lies”, as he deemed the show “dishonest” and “inaccurate”.

Reflecting on Menendez’s viewpoint on the show, Javier Bardem & Chloë Sevigny respected his stance on the issue, with the former stating that it’s “absolutely legitimate for him to express”.

I think it’s absolutely legitimate to for him to express and have an opinion of course, and I totally respect that, we totally respect that. And we support whatever he wants to think about it because it’s his life.

Sevigny added that she’ll tune in with the upcoming Netflix docu-series, which tells the story from the Menendez brothers’ perspective.

I know that Netflix has a documentary coming out where they tell their side of the storyI’m very interested to tune in and-and hear them.

However, Bardem & Sevigny did commend Ryan Murphy for the research that went into the series, which the showrunner also touched on while tackling the real-life Erik Menendez’s criticisms.

Apart from elaborating his reasoning behind incorporating some controversial elements in the show, Murphy shared that he doesn’t think Menendez has “watched the show”, given that he’s still in prison. Moreover, the showrunner added that he is assured if Menendez does give the show a chance, he’d be a fan of Cooper Koch‘s portrayal of the controversial figure.

I think that’s interesting because I know he hasn’t watched the show. So I find that curious. I hope he does watch it. I think if he did watch it he would be incredibly proud of Cooper Koch who plays him.

Despite the drama surrounding the Netflix series, similar to its predecessor, The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, the series has become a major hit for the platform.

Monsters is available to stream on Netflix.
