Dave Filoni currently serves as the Chief Creative officer at Lucasfilm, having worked on several Star Wars projects. At this point, Filoni is a franchise veteran, having started his stint with the fan-favorite The Clone Wars animated series. During an interview, Filoni addressed all the hatred aimed at the prequel trilogy of films, which were received extremely poorly by fans.
Filoni admitted that most Star Wars movies were susceptible to criticism and hate from fans. However, the producer revealed that there was only one entry in the franchise that was universally beloved and that is the very first installment that launched the epic space opera saga. Here is what Filoni had to say about the merits of the original Star Wars movie and why it is so beloved.
Dave Filoni Admitted that Only the Original Star Wars Movie is Immune to Hatred
Dave Filoni worked on Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, before going on to work on several other projects. Filoni has professed his love for the prequel trilogy directed by George Lucas on several occasions, but the films were initially received negatively by the fans who grew up with the original trilogy.
During an interview with Wired, Filoni was asked about pleasing both sections of the fanbase, who had loved the originals, and the younger viewers who admired the prequels. Filoni cited the example of the 1977 original film, explaining its evergreen appeal.
The way that I’ve dealt with that is to go back to A New Hope, because there is something about that movie, which is the first one – not chronologically, but you know – it’s the first one that captivated six-year-olds and 45-year-olds.
Filoni made the above statement, adding that there would always be some aspects of the latter installments that some fans would like more than others.
However, the original Star Wars film, later retitled Star Wars: A New Hope, served as a great blueprint for the franchise because of its appeal extending to different age groups. Therefore, according to Filoni, only the first film was truly immune to any sort of hatred from the fans.
Dave Filoni Explained How the Original Star Wars Impacted the Creation of The Clone Wars
In the same interview, Filoni admitted that while working on The Clone Wars, he faced the problem of appealing to different generations of Star Wars fans. However, the showrunner tackled the problem by revisiting Lucas’ original movie and encouraged his staff to do the same.
I keep trying to keep the crew in the mindset of, you’re developing a show the year before Star Wars comes out. Don’t count on people knowing what a Jedi is.
Filoni made the above statement, explaining that he made the animated series inclusive for all types of viewers by taking a novel approach to the franchise’s overall lore and world-building.
Furthermore, Filoni revealed that Lucas had insisted on the animated series having an episodic nature. The showrunner stated that Lucas wanted the show’s episodes to stand on their own and not require knowledge of previous Star Wars installments or episodes of the series. Therefore, it is evident why The Clone Wars has such a widespread and lasting appeal.
The Star Wars movies are streaming on Disney+.
