While Ewan McGregor remains notable for his stint in the Prequel trilogy, the actor is no stranger to the realm of superheroes. Having already played Black Mask, arguably one of the best DCEU villains, in Birds of Prey, per reports, the actor is once again being considered for another comic book role in James Gunn’s DCU.
But prior to making his DC debut with Black Mask, the Revenge of the Sith star almost starred in the MCU as the sorcerer supreme.
Ewan McGregor Fell Short of Landing Doctor Strange
Although it’s hard to envision anyone in the shoes of Doctor Strange other than Benedict Cumberbatch, before the Sherlock Holmes star was finalized for the gig, the Star Wars star was in the running for it. Speaking to MTV (via CinemaBland), Ewan McGregor confirmed that he was one of the high-profile actors, who were being eyed for the role of Doctor Strange.
Elaborating on it, McGregor expressed that he was intrigued by the idea of playing a comic book role, even though he had no clue who Strange was.
I was into it, yeah. I thought it was exciting. I’m not a big comic guy. So I didn’t know who Doctor Strange was. So I was intrigued by it, and I like the idea of creating or being a superhero character.
But as the story goes, the actor fell short of landing the gig, as Marvel eventually went with Cumberbatch. However, the actor wasn’t downcast by the rejection, as being part of it was still fun for him.
Ewan McGregor Is Reportedly Being Eyed for DCU’s Green Lantern
Fortunately, the actor didn’t have to wait long to tackle a CBM role, as he’d go on to star as the main antagonist of Margot Robbie’s Bird of Prey. Interstingly, Black Mask might not be the end of his comic book journey, as per new reports, he and True Detective star Matthew McConaughey are being eyed for the role of Hal Jordan in the DCU, if the apparent deal with Josh Brolin goes south.
Similar to McGregor, the Interstellar star has also showcased his interest in helming a Marvel or DC role, and confessed to reading scripts from both Comic book giants, but stressed, “Nothing has been right for me yet”.
I’ve read some Marvel and DC scripts and I’ve talked about working with them on some scripts. Yeah, I’ve circled some of those. Nothing has been right for me yet. But I’m sure open to it,
It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for the duo. Furthermore, with the multiverse gate open in the MCU, fans will hope they eventually witness a Doctor Strange variant, helmed by McGregor.
